Cycling holiday in Burgundy - 7 days

7 Days / 6 Nights
Easy

Just an hour and a half by comfortable high-speed train (TGV) from Paris and you're in the culinary centre of France and the heart of Burgundy. Naturally, the fine food here is accompanied by world-renowned Burgundy wines.

The rolling, open and tranquil landscape is criss-crossed by several rivers and canals. The terrain is fairly easy to cycle and the stages are relatively short. The tour starts in Dijon in the north and heads south through world-famous wine regions such as Côtes de Nuits and Côtes de Beaune to Macon. Along the way, enjoy the tranquillity of the charming villages and admire the many Romanesque-style architectural gems. Note the bricks laid in distinctive patterns on the roof of the castle, which is typical of Burgundy. The key words for the tour are wine, architecture and history, as well as the hospitality, quality and art of living that the good ‘bourgignon’ is known for.

Highlights of the journey

  • Discover the historic city of Dijon, known for its mustard and rich cultural heritage.
  • Cycle through world-famous wine regions such as Côtes de Nuits and Côtes de Beaune and experience the rolling vineyard-filled landscape.

The route

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

Arrive in Dijon - famous for its excellent mustard. Bikes and equipment will be handed over by our French colleague at the hotel in the evening. Dinner on your own and at your own expense.

Hotel (example): Hotel des Ducs***

Before today's cycling stage, we suggest you spend some time in Dijon. Today's tour follows the route of the ‘great wines’ into the district where Napoléon picked up his favourite wine, Gevrey-Chambertin, and past some of the world's best vineyards.

Take a break to see le Clos de Vougeot, the abbey famous for its grand cru wines and founded in 1098. This is where the international wine fraternity Les Chevaliers du Tastevin is based.

Your cycling tour ends in Nuits-St-Georges, where you check into your hotel.

Hotel (example): Hostellerie St Vincent***

After breakfast, you'll cycle through hilly terrain with vineyards and magnificent views, via famous Nuits Saint Georges, Vosne Romanée and lovely little wine villages like Echevronne and Pernard-Vergelesses.

In the afternoon, arrive in Beaune, the beautiful wine capital of Burgundy.

Hotel (example): Hostellerie de la Bretonnière***

We recommend a visit to ‘les Hospices de Beaune’, built in 1443, and the wine museum opposite before setting off on today's stage. Then you can use your newly acquired wine knowledge on the tour!

From your bike seat, you can enjoy the views of the vineyards as you follow the signposts ‘la Voie des Vignes’ through some hilly terrain via famous wine villages such as Pommard, Volnay, the Grands Cru vineyards (Montrachet and Batard Montrachet). There are many opportunities for impulsive wine tastings along the way. Briefly cycle along the canal before reaching your destination for the day.

Hotel (example): Hôtel Le Dracy***

Much of the journey takes place on a cycle path (Voie Verte) without car traffic. The kilometres fly by! Along the way you'll pass the medieval town of Saint-Gengoux-le-National (worth a stop) and the village of Cormatin with its beautiful castle.

Dinner and overnight in the centre of Cluny with its medieval abbey from 910, once the spiritual centre of Europe and still visited by tourists and pilgrims from all over the world.

Hotel (example): Hôtel de Bourgogne***

After breakfast, continue on the cycle path towards Macon. The landscape starts to become more hilly, even though you're cycling on the easy cycle path. On the way, the castle of Berze Le Chatel is a romantic place to visit and the beautiful views from the road will invite you to take a detour for a short ride.

You'll also cross Europe's longest tunnel open to cyclists and continue through the Val Lamartinien with stunning views of the Solutré Rock.

Hotel (example): Ibis Macon Centre***

After breakfast, it's time to check out and travel home on your own.
