Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain and one of the world’s most legendary challenges for adventurous travellers. Why Climb Kilimanjaro?
Climbing Kilimanjaro is an adventure – but it doesn’t have to be complicated. When you travel with Bering Travel, you get experienced local guides who know the routes inside out, cosy accommodations or tents, safety all the way, and of course, luggage transport. In other words: all you have to do is walk – we take care of the rest.
We know that the experience is at its best when you can focus on enjoying the journey, the scenery, and the atmosphere. That’s why we provide full support before and during your trip. And if you need a little extra motivation, check out our blog post “10 Good Reasons to Climb Kilimanjaro” – though we’re pretty sure that one look at the mountain will be all the convincing you need.
Machame Route (Whiskey Route)
The Machame Route is known as the most beautiful way to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro. Along the way, you’ll hike through lush rainforest, open moorlands, and dramatic rock formations before reaching the snow-capped peak. The route is slightly longer than Marangu, giving you more time to acclimatise – and therefore a higher success rate of reaching the top.
This route is perfect for those who want the full Kilimanjaro experience, with plenty of natural variety and a great balance between challenge and reward. It’s not called the “Whiskey Route” for nothing – it’s a bit stronger than Coca-Cola, but the taste of victory at the summit makes every step worthwhile.
Marangu Route (Coca-Cola Route)
The Marangu Route is the oldest and most classic path to the summit of Kilimanjaro. Here, you’ll stay in simple mountain huts instead of tents, offering a slightly more comfortable experience and easier logistics. The route is the shortest of the two, which means the pace is faster – making acclimatisation a bit more challenging and resulting in a slightly lower success rate.
This route is perfect for those who prefer a more straightforward climb, with a roof over your head each night and fewer days on the mountain. Marangu is known as the “Coca-Cola Route” – a little easier to handle, but without losing the sense of adventure when you finally stand on the Roof of Africa.
Practical Information About Kilimanjaro
Seasons – The Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro
In principle, Kilimanjaro can be climbed all year round, but there are definitely times when the experience is better. The most popular seasons are January–March and June–October, when the weather is more stable and the views from the summit are often absolutely spectacular.
During the rainy seasons (April–May and November), there are fewer people on the routes, but a higher chance of rain and muddy trails. This can be an advantage if you prefer a quieter experience on the mountain – but you should be prepared for a few extra challenges along the way.
At Bering Travel, we recommend choosing one of the dry seasons if this is your first major mountain climb. That way, you’ll have the best chance of good weather, stunning views, and an even greater adventure.
Equipment and Preparation Requirements
Climbing Kilimanjaro doesn’t require any technical climbing equipment – it’s all about walking, putting one foot in front of the other, and enduring. However, you must be prepared for changing climates: from tropical rainforest at the base of the mountain to ice and snow at the summit.
This means your packing list should cover a wide range: light and breathable clothing for warm days, warm layered clothing for cold nights, a good sleeping bag, sturdy hiking boots, and a rain jacket. The rest of your luggage is carried by our team, so you’ll only need to hike with a small daypack containing water, snacks, and essentials.
It’s also a good idea to prepare physically before the trip. Long walks, hikes in hilly terrain, and perhaps some extra cardio training will make the experience both easier and more enjoyable. At Bering Travel, we’ll send you a detailed packing list and provide helpful tips for preparation – so you’ll arrive at Kilimanjaro ready and well-equipped.
Acclimatisation and Safety
When climbing Kilimanjaro, altitude is the biggest challenge. The air gets thinner the higher you go, which is why proper acclimatisation is essential to reaching the summit safely and healthily. The Machame Route allows more time to adjust to the altitude, while Marangu is faster – and therefore can be tougher on the body.
Our experienced local guides constantly keep an eye on you along the way and check for signs of altitude sickness. Symptoms can include headache, nausea, or fatigue – and the golden rule applies: listen to your body and never rush upward. It’s better to take it slow and have the energy to enjoy the view from the top than to push too hard.
At Bering Travel, safety is our highest priority. We ensure the right daily rhythm, proper breaks, nutritious meals, and overall comfort throughout the journey. This means you can focus on what really matters: slowing down, breathing deeply – and gradually making your way to the “Roof of Africa.”
Combine Your Climb with a Safari or Beach Holiday in Zanzibar
Since you’re already in Tanzania, why not make the experience truly unforgettable? After a week on the mountain with sweat on your brow and breathtaking views from the Roof of Africa, you can celebrate your achievement with a few days on safari among lions, elephants, and giraffes – or with a cocktail in hand on Zanzibar’s white sandy beaches.
At Bering Travel, we help you combine your Kilimanjaro climb with either a safari or a beach holiday, giving you the best of both worlds: adventure in the heights and relaxation (or even more adventure) afterwards. This way, your journey becomes more than just a climb – it becomes a complete Tanzanian experience.
