A brief history of Turkey
Turkey has a rich and diverse history, shaped by many civilizations over thousands of years. From the ancient Lycians, Greeks, and Romans to the Byzantines and Ottomans – each has left its mark in the form of ruins, castles, churches, and mosques. Modern Turkey was founded in 1923 by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, and today Eastern and Western traditions meet in a country where history is always present – whether you are walking along the coast, visiting a bazaar, or exploring an ancient city.

Turkey’s culinary treasures
Turkish cuisine is known for its intense flavours, fresh ingredients, and great variety. Along the coast you will find fish and seafood served simply with lemon and herbs, while the mountain villages offer stews, freshly baked bread, and local specialties. Classics such as kebab, meze, and börek are often accompanied by fresh salads and yoghurt with mint. Sweet treats like baklava and lokum complete the experience – perfectly rounded off with a glass of strong Turkish tea or coffee.

Geography and landscapes
Turkey covers a vast area, with nature that changes dramatically from region to region. In the south, the Turkish Riviera stretches out with turquoise waters, dramatic cliffs, and idyllic bays. Inland, you will find mighty mountain ranges such as the Taurus Mountains and the Anatolian plateau, offering endless horizons and a harsher climate. Cappadocia presents a fairytale landscape with its famous rock formations and valleys, while the Black Sea coast is green, lush, and filled with tea plantations. The combination of coast, mountains, and plateau makes Turkey one of the most varied and fascinating countries to explore on foot.

Climate and weather
Turkey has a varied climate that changes from region to region. Along the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts, you will find hot summers and mild winters – perfect for walking in spring and autumn, when the temperatures are pleasant, and the landscape is green and lush. Inland, on the Anatolian plateau and in Cappadocia, the climate is more continental with hot summers, cold winters, and large temperature differences between day and night. Along the Black Sea coast, the climate is humid and green all year round. This means that Turkey offers great travel experiences throughout the year, depending on the type of holiday you are looking for.
