Why choose a walking tour in Italy?

Italy isn’t just a country you visit – it’s a place you taste, smell, and feel with every step. Hiking in Italy is the perfect way to experience it up close, far from highways and mass tourism. Here are some of the reasons so many people choose to explore Italy on foot.

Food and wine along the trail

Italy is world-famous for its cuisine, and on a hiking trip, meals become part of the experience. Imagine ending your day on the trail with homemade pasta, fresh mozzarella, locally produced wine, and views over vineyards or the sea. Along the route, you can stop in small villages for a cappuccino, a gelato, or a bite of a local specialty. For many of our guests, food isn’t just “logistics,” but one of the highlights of the journey.

Culture and history along the way

Italy is one of the most culturally rich countries in the world. When you hike, you get up close to its history: ancient Etruscan paths in Tuscany, medieval hilltop villages, hidden churches in mountain towns, or dramatic coastal cliffs with centuries of fishing heritage. Every day is a journey back in time, where you can feel the past in the landscape and architecture – all without standing in line behind tourist buses.

Natural variety – mountains, coast, lowlands

Few countries offer such diverse landscapes in such a short distance. You can hike among the snow-capped peaks of the Alps, the dramatic rock formations of the Dolomites, the rolling vineyards of Tuscany, the forests of Umbria, or along spectacular coastal trails like Cinque Terre or the Amalfi Coast. Italy also has beautiful islands such as Sicily and Sardinia, where you can combine sea, mountains, and culture. Whether you’re looking for gentle hills or steep mountain passes, there’s a route to suit you.

Freedom and calm – hiking at your own pace

A hiking trip in Italy is the ultimate form of slow travel. You walk at your own pace, stop whenever you want, and take the time to truly enjoy your surroundings. You're not tied to a bus schedule or a guided tour with a fixed itinerary. It offers a wonderful sense of freedom, where you shape your own day and experiences. At Bering Travel, we offer self-guided trips with navigation via our app and printed route notes, giving you both flexibility and peace of mind.

Family hiking in Italy

Hiking with children in Italy

Italy is perfect for family hiking with children of all ages, especially on routes that pass through gentle lowlands or along the coast. The terrain is manageable, and you can enjoy charming villages, delicious ice cream breaks, small beaches, and fascinating stories about local culture and history.

Hiking with kids isn’t about going the farthest or the fastest – it’s about sharing experiences, discovering small details in the landscape, and spending quality time together. With Bering Travel, you get both safety and freedom to create lasting holiday memories for the whole family.

Types of walking holidays in Italy

Italy offers an exceptional variety of hiking routes – from high alpine passes to peaceful vineyards and spectacular coastal trails. At Bering Travel, we’ve selected the most beautiful and authentic routes across the country, so you can find exactly the kind of hiking experience that suits you.

Best time to go

Italy has an impressive variety of landscapes and climates. This means you can find excellent hiking opportunities almost all year round.

Spring (April–June)

Spring is one of the very best times for a hiking trip in Italy. The landscape bursts into color with blooming fields, green hills, and freshly leafed-out forests. Temperatures are mild and pleasant, typically 15–25 °C depending on the region, making it ideal for hiking without getting overheated. Tuscany and Umbria are at their most beautiful, with rolling vineyards, historic villages, and the scent of blooming jasmine in the air. The coastal areas – like Cinque Terre or the Amalfi Coast – are also fantastic in spring, before the peak heat and crowds of summer arrive.

Summer (July–August)

While the lowlands can get very hot in summer, the mountains of northern Italy are a paradise for hikers in July and August. The Dolomites and the Alps offer fresh, clear air and temperatures that are often a comfortable 15–25 °C at higher elevations. Trails are dry and well maintained, and you have long, bright days to enjoy. This is where you can hike among dramatic peaks, idyllic alpine meadows, and small mountain villages with slate roofs and hearty, rustic food. It’s the ideal season for those looking for more hilly or alpine challenges in a spectacular landscape.

Autumn (September–October)

Autumn in Italy is known for its golden colors, cooler temperatures, and a special atmosphere. The grape harvest is underway, and the vineyards glow in shades of yellow and red. Temperatures drop to around 18–25 °C in September and 15–20 °C in October, making lowland hiking comfortable and relaxed. You’ll also avoid the largest crowds and have the villages and trails more to yourself. Autumn is perfect for combining active travel with culinary experiences like local wines, freshly harvested olives, and wild mushrooms from the forests.

Winter

In winter, most high-altitude mountain routes close due to snow and cold, but that doesn’t mean you have to rule out Italy as a hiking destination. In southern Italy, Sicily, and Sardinia, you’ll still find mild temperatures around 12–18 °C and many sunny days. Coastal trails are quiet and peaceful, offering a completely different, tranquil side of Italy without the large tourist crowds. It’s also an ideal time for those wanting to escape winter cold elsewhere and enjoy hiking in lighter clothing with fewer people on the trails.

Northern Italy

Northern Italy is truly a hiker’s paradise, with spectacular mountain landscapes, deep lakes, lush valleys, and dramatic coastal trails.

Dolomites
The Dolomites are famous for their dramatic, sheer rock faces, blooming meadows, and postcard-perfect villages. Here you’ll find world-class hiking with well-marked trails and breathtaking views every day. Routes range from easy walks to more challenging high-altitude treks. Hiking here lets you experience the unique blend of Italian and Tyrolean culture, great food, and warm hospitality in cozy mountain hotels and rifugi.

Lake Garda
Around Lake Garda you’ll find some of the most varied and accessible hiking routes in Northern Italy. You can walk through olive groves and vineyards, climb panoramic mountain paths, or wander narrow village streets lined with cafés and small shops. The lake’s blue water, green hills, and dramatic cliffs create an unforgettable setting for a hiking trip. The mild climate makes it ideal from spring through autumn, with routes for both beginners and more experienced hikers.

Lake Como and Lago Maggiore
The iconic northern Italian lakes, Lake Como and Lago Maggiore, offer elegant villas, blooming gardens, and narrow mountain trails with stunning views over the shimmering water. The routes here are often hilly but reward you with postcard-worthy landscapes and charming villages. You can enjoy both culture and nature at a relaxed pace – finishing the day with local food and a glass of wine overlooking the lake.

Cinque Terre
Farther west along the Ligurian coast lies Cinque Terre – one of Italy’s most iconic hiking regions. The five colorful fishing villages are connected by spectacular coastal trails that wind high above the sea through vineyards and olive groves. Along the way, you’ll enjoy dramatic views over the azure Mediterranean, have the chance to stop at small trattorias, and take time to explore the charming towns with their pastel-colored houses. Cinque Terre is perfect in spring and autumn, when the climate is mild and the landscape is green and lush.

Central Italy

Central Italy is the essence of classic, picturesque Italy – rolling hills, ancient hilltop villages, vineyards and olive groves, and a mild climate almost all year round.

Umbria
Umbria is often called “the green heart of Italy,” and for good reason. You’ll find gentle green hills, dense forests, vineyards, and medieval villages that seem unchanged for centuries. Hiking routes here are generally easy to moderate, making them perfect for couples and families who want to combine activity with culture and great food. Along the way, you can enjoy local specialties like truffles, wine, and cheeses – and stay at charming agriturismi with genuine Italian hospitality.

Tuscany
Tuscany is perhaps Italy’s most iconic hiking destination, known for its soft hills, endless vineyards, cypress-lined roads, and medieval villages perched on hilltops. Hiking here feels like walking through a living postcard, with every turn offering new and breathtaking views.

At Bering Travel, we’ve chosen routes in Tuscany that are perfect for both beginners and experienced hikers. You’ll find easy to moderate terrain with good trails that the whole family can enjoy. Along the way, you can visit historic towns like San Gimignano and Siena, stop for lunch in a small trattoria, or taste local wines right at the vineyard.

Lazio
Lazio is more than just Rome. The region’s countryside offers exciting and varied hiking routes through ancient Etruscan paths, forested hills, and charming villages. You can discover historic sites, abandoned monasteries, and ancient roads that have connected people for millennia. Hiking in Lazio combines cultural history with peaceful natural experiences – and is perfect in spring or autumn, when temperatures are mild and the landscape is green and alive.

Southern Italy

Southern Italy is the essence of Mediterranean warmth and charm – with dramatic coastlines, ancient cultural landscapes, whitewashed villages, olive groves, and crystal-clear sea. Here, you can hike through unique, authentic regions where traditions are alive and nature is still wild and grand.

Puglia
Puglia, the heel of Italy’s boot, is known for its white villages, olive groves, and dramatic cliffs along the Adriatic Sea. You can hike through peaceful landscapes past historic trulli houses and vineyards, stopping in small towns for local food and warm hospitality. The climate is mild in spring and autumn, making it perfect for hiking without the intense summer heat.

Campania
Campania offers some of Italy’s most iconic coastal landscapes – especially the Amalfi Coast, where trails wind high above the blue Mediterranean past lemon groves, terraced vineyards, and colorful towns like Positano and Amalfi. Here, you’ll find dramatic scenery, historic paths like the “Path of the Gods” (Sentiero degli Dei), and plenty of opportunities to combine hiking with culture, history, and delicious local food.

Calabria
Calabria, at the tip of Italy’s boot, is one of the country’s wildest and most authentic regions. The landscapes are dramatic and rugged – from high mountains and forested valleys to rocky coastlines with small, almost hidden beaches. Hiking routes here are quiet and less traveled, letting you enjoy peace, silence, and the feeling of discovering a place where time almost stands still.

Sicily
Sicily is a world of its own – with a unique mix of nature, culture, and history. You can hike in the shadow of Mount Etna, through lush valleys, along coastal trails, or among ancient Greek temples and baroque towns. Routes range from easy coastal walks to more challenging mountain terrain, all with a rich cultural heritage and a food scene that makes every meal an experience.

Sardinia
Sardinia is known for its raw beauty, wild mountains, and unspoiled coastline with turquoise-blue sea. The island’s trails offer everything from dramatic gorges like Gola di Gorropu to old shepherd paths winding through macchia scrub, cork oak forests, and small villages. The experience here is authentic and far from mass tourism – perfect for those seeking both nature, culture, and tranquility.
