Cycling in Burgundy - 5 days

5 Days / 4 Nights
Easy

Only an hour and a half by comfortable high-speed train (TGV) from Paris, and you’ll find yourselves in France’s culinary capital and the heart of Burgundy. The excellent food here is, of course, accompanied by the world-famous Burgundy wines.

The rolling, open, and peaceful landscape is crisscrossed by several rivers and canals. The terrain is quite easy for cycling, and the stages are relatively short. The tour starts in Dijon in the north and continues south through world-renowned wine regions such as Côtes de Nuits and Côtes de Beaune. Along the way, you can enjoy the tranquility of charming villages and admire the many Romanesque architectural gems. One striking feature is the patterned brickwork on the castle roofs — a characteristic hallmark of Burgundy.

Highlights of the journey

  • Discover the historic city of Dijon, known for its mustard and rich cultural heritage.
  • Cycle through world-famous wine regions such as Côtes de Nuits and Côtes de Beaune and experience the rolling vineyard-filled landscape.
  • Visit iconic vineyards and landmarks like le Clos de Vougeot and get an insight into the proud wine traditions of Burgundy.
  • Explore Beaune, the beautiful wine capital of Burgundy. Visit ‘les Hospices de Beaune,’ a historic hospital from 1443, and take a tour of the wine museum.
  • Discover idyllic wine villages such as Pommard, Volnay, Merusault, and Puligny Montrachet.

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

Arrive in Dijon - famous for its excellent mustard. Bikes and equipment will be handed over by our French colleague at the hotel in the evening. Dinner on your own and at your own expense.

Hotel (example): Hotel des Ducs***

Before today's cycling stage, we suggest you spend some time in Dijon. Today's tour follows the route of the ‘great wines’ into the district where Napoléon picked up his favourite wine, Gevrey-Chambertin, and past some of the world's best vineyards.

Take a break to see le Clos de Vougeot, the abbey famous for its grand cru wines and founded in 1098. This is where the international wine fraternity Les Chevaliers du Tastevin is based.

Your cycling tour ends in Nuits-St-Georges, where you check into your hotel.

Hotel (example): La Gentilhommière***

After breakfast, you'll cycle through hilly terrain with vineyards and magnificent views, via famous Nuits Saint Georges, Vosne Romanée and lovely little wine villages like Echevronne and Pernard-Vergelesses.

In the afternoon, arrive in Beaune, the beautiful wine capital of Burgundy.

Hotel (example): Hostellerie de la Bretonnière***

After breakfast, you have two options for today’s cycling experiences.
The circular route over Saint Romain includes a good climb before you reach the plateau, where there are several viewpoints along the way overlooking the beautiful wine landscape below. It’s a fantastic ride, well worth the initial uphill section (and on an e-bike, the climb will be easily managed).
The descent takes you through charming small villages, passing between the legendary Grand Cru vineyards such as Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet.

Along the way, there will be plenty of opportunities for spontaneous wine tastings before you reach the lowlands again. From there, you’ll cycle back to Beaune along the paths between the vineyards, where an exciting wine tasting in one of the area’s impressive wine cellars is included in the afternoon.

If you prefer not to take the route over the beautiful plateau, it’s possible to choose an alternative ride through the lowlands to Santaney and back.

The evening ends with another pleasant overnight stay in Beaune.

After breakfast, it's time to check out and travel home on your own.
