Cycling holiday in Beaujolais - 7 days

7 Days / 6 Nights
Moderate

Not far from Lyon, Beaujolais is an undiscovered gem. The rolling countryside is completely covered in vineyards that change colour with the seasons, from intense green in summer to orange and red in autumn, interspersed with ochre-coloured villages with church spires and fortress walls that reflect the sunshine and glow in the full spectrum of colours from yellow to red.

Numerous villages are beautifully perched on the hillsides, some of them on top of mountain peaks with sweeping views of the surrounding area. Everywhere travellers are welcomed by hospitable winemakers. The meals included in the package are of the highest quality.

Beaujolais is a classic wine region that offers much more than the famous Beaujolais Nouveau from this year's harvest. The Gamay grape from this district also produces juicy wines with a crispness and flavour from the soil.

Highlights of the journey

  • Discover beautiful Beaujolais, where green-clad hills and endless vineyards stretch as far as the eye can see
  • Discover charming villages beautifully scattered across the plains and hillsides.
  • Visit Romanèche Thorins and explore the wine park Le Hameau du Vin with its entertaining museum
  • Climb the rocky peak of La Roche de Solutré and enjoy panoramic views across Beaujolais

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

Arrive at Lyon airport (St Exupéry). A taxi will meet you at the airport and take you to your first accommodation in Ambérieux d'Azergues. Here you'll be met by one of our French colleagues and given a briefing on the tour, bikes and equipment. If you wish, you can use the hotel's jacuzzi and sauna before dinner and an overnight stay at the hotel.

Hotel (example): Les Pierres Dorées***

The tour follows quiet mountain roads through the vineyards known as le Beaujolais de Pierres Dorées (the Beaujolais of golden stones), where village houses are built in light ochre-coloured stones that reflect the sunlight with a golden glow. On the way to Vaux-en-Beaujolais you'll pass many villages with exotic-sounding names like Bagnols, Oingt, Château de Montmelas and Salles Arbuissonnas.

Dinner of a gastronomic nature and accommodation in a ‘hotel de charme’.

Hotel (example): Auberge de Clochemerle***

Today you'll be travelling through the beautiful area back to the same hotel. Expect some climbs as you'll be travelling up rather hilly hillsides, but the scenery is incomparably beautiful. Along the way, you'll pass by cosy villages and wine châteaux, and when you reach the top, you'll be amply rewarded with magnificent views of the entire Beaujolais district.

The viewpoints are numerous, including Mont Brouilly, Col de la Croix Marchampt and Col de la Croix Rosier (725 metres above sea level), all peaks in a larger mountain range that is famous and infamous among cyclists in the area. After all the climbs, it will be nice to roll back down to the same hotel and an even better dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Hotel (example): Auberge de Clochemerle***

After a delicious breakfast, you'll drive through the heart of Beaujolais with local wines from the wine villages of Morgon, Chiroubles and Fleurie. Your destination for the day is Romanèche Thorins, close to the wine park le Hameau du Vin with its fun museum where you'll be introduced to what wine and wine production means to France and its regions.

The visit to the museum is rounded off with a guided wine tasting of 2 wines (museum visit and wine tasting are included in the tour price).

Dinner and overnight stay in the village's cosy three-star hotel.

Hotel (example): Les Maritonnes***

The tour also runs in a loop today, or you can take a rest day if you prefer. We suggest a tour around the ‘balconies’ of some of the best vineyards in Beaujolais. The landscape is quieter and less hilly, and there are more castles and sights to see here. Today you'll head up to the wine village of Chiroubles for panoramic views of the fields. Dinner and overnight at the same hotel.

Hotel (example): Les Maritonnes***

This final day of cycling takes you through the valleys of Beaujolais, Saint Amour Bellevue and Solutré Puilly to Mâcon. Today you will pass the most famous villages of the great Beaujolais wines: Moulin à Vent, Chénas, Juliénas, Saint Amour.

On the way to Mâcon, the most energetic can experience the characteristic mountain peak of la Roche de Solutré, a popular excursion destination for the French with its stunning views and famous after President Francois Mitterand made it the subject of his regular annual excursions in the 1980s. Dinner on your own in Mâcon and overnight stay.

Hotel (example): Ibis Macon Centre***

Breakfast and departure or spend the morning sightseeing in the Burgundian town of Mâcon. There are frequent trains back to Lyon. We recommend an extra night in Mâcon or Lyon after the tour!
