Enjoy the glistening lakes of the Salzkammergut
This self-guided cycling tour explores Austria's stunning Salzkammergut lake region. Cycle approximately 224 km over 4 days through scenic landscapes, passing iconic lakes including Mondsee, Attersee, Traunsee, and Wolfgangsee. The moderate route follows dedicated cycle paths and quiet roads with minimal elevation gain. Highlights include the imperial town of Bad Ischl, charming lakeside villages, and the cultural treasures of Salzburg. Accommodation in 3-star hotels with breakfast included, plus luggage transport between hotels.
You can almost hear the tones of ‘the hills are alive, with the sound of music’ as you cycle through the stunning Austrian countryside with its green fields and beautiful mountains that are beautifully reflected in the many lakes on a windless day. Salzkammergut is an area that invites you to cycle along the lakeshores while everyday life is put on hold for a while.
In addition to being the area known from the film The Sound of Music, Salzkammergut has plenty of nature and cultural experiences to offer. Salzburg is full of historic buildings and just a few kilometres outside the city, you'll experience unique panoramic landscapes.
The tour takes you past 10 beautiful lakes and through small exciting towns such as Oberndorf, Gmunden, Bad Ischl, Obertraun, St Wolfgang and St Gilgen.
Along the lakeshores and the Salzach River, the terrain is flat, but between the lake areas it's a more hilly landscape. The routes are partly on cycle paths near the towns, but outside the towns it's mostly on country lanes, cosy forest roads and gravel roads.
Highlights on the tour
This is a generally easy cycling tour, with only a handful of short uphill sections. Most of the journey between the lakes follows dedicated cycle paths and quiet local roads. Busier roads are encountered only on a few brief stretches.
