Turkey - Walking holiday - Lycian Way

The eastern part of the Lycian Way

8 Days / 7 Nights
Moderate to Challenging

The eastern stretch of the Lycian Way, just south of Antalya from Gedelme to Adrasan, is among the most beautiful walking routes in Turkey. Here you follow the eastern coast and experience a landscape where mountains and sea meet in Olympos National Park. The trails wind above the turquoise Mediterranean and lead you down to small, idyllic bays where you can enjoy a refreshing swim. From the pass at Musa Dagi, a magnificent panorama opens up over dramatic mountain peaks and the endless sea.

Along the way, you encounter fascinating historical traces from different eras. Lycians, Greeks, Persians, and Romans all left their mark on the area, later followed by Byzantines and Ottomans. The eastern part of the Lycian Way takes you past impressive ruins of once-thriving ancient cities, now abandoned and hidden in the wild nature.

The name comes from the ancient kingdom of Lycia, which the route passes through. In Turkish it is called Likya Yolu (Lik-ja Jo-lu), while in English it is known as the Lycian Way (Li-Shan Way). Two names – the same fantastic walking route through Lycian cultural heritage.

Highlights on the tour

  • Tahtali Pass (1,800 m) – the highest point of the tour, with panoramic views of both the mountains and the Mediterranean

  • Minen Bay & Cirali – walk from the mountains down to the coast

  • Yanartas – the eternal flames – a mythical landscape where natural gas burns directly from the rocks

  • Musa Dagi – hike through strawberry tree forests to the top of Mount Moses

  • Gelidonya Lighthouse – an iconic end to the tour with stunning views of the five rocky islets

More about the route

The terrain on this part of the Lycian Way is varied and often rocky, but the trail is well marked, making it easy to follow. Each day involves 4–7 hours of walking, with daily ascents of 300–1,100 m and corresponding descents. The route offers magnificent views of the coast and the mountains along the way. To optimise the experience, transfers are included for sections with less interest, ensuring that only the most beautiful and rewarding parts of the route are covered.
Good walking shoes and a reasonable level of fitness are recommended.

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

You arrive in Antalya, where you will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel in the city. There is time to settle in, enjoy the atmosphere, and perhaps take an evening stroll through the narrow streets or along the old harbour.

Overnight stay in Antalya including breakfast.

From Antalya, a transfer takes you up into the mountains of Olympos National Park, to the small village of Gedelme at 920 metres above sea level. Today’s walk begins here, passing through remote mountain villages and fragrant pine forests. At the Goynuk plateau, the view opens up towards both the Mediterranean and the mighty Tahtali peak (2,370 m). The day’s goal is the Ovacik plateau – a magnificent spot where you can look out over the turquoise sea on one side and the Taurus Mountains on the other.

Overnight stay in Ovacik (half board).

Today you reach the highest point of the tour. The walk takes you up through forests to the Tahtali Pass at 1,800 metres, with the majestic Olympos peak as a backdrop. The air is clear and filled with the scent of cedar trees, and from the pass there is a magnificent panorama of valleys, mountains, and the sea. From here, the route continues down to the village of Beycik.

Overnight stay in Beycik (full board).
Hotel (example): Konak Hotel

After a short transfer, today’s walk begins with a descent towards the coast. The first stop is the hidden bay of Minen Bay, where you can enjoy a refreshing swim from a secluded beach. From here, the trail follows a spectacular route with far-reaching views until you reach the charming coastal town of Cirali and your hotel near the sea.

Overnight stay in Cirali (full board).
Hotel (example): Plaj Hotel

Today’s walk leads from Cirali through orange groves and pine forest to Yanartas – the famous “eternal flames,” where natural gas seeps from the ground and burns between the rocks. This mythical landscape was in ancient times linked to the Chimera legend*. The walk continues to the village of Ulupinar, known for its cool springs.

*According to the myth, Chimera was a terrible creature composed of several animals. It had the head and forepart of a lion, a goat on its back, and a serpent or dragon as its tail – and it could breathe fire. The monster was said to have been killed underground by Bellerophon (Greek mythology), and the eternal flames are its fire still escaping from the earth.

Overnight stay in Cirali (full board).

From your hotel, the walk first takes you to the ancient city of Olympos, once a pirate stronghold in antiquity – a visit that is highly recommended. After exploring the ruins, you continue along a path through a forest of strawberry trees up to the summit of Musa Dagi (which translates directly as Mount Moses). The mountain is known for its steep cliffs, dense forests, and magnificent views over the Mediterranean and the Taurus Mountains, and it is said to be named after the biblical Moses.

From here, the route descends to Adrasan, where you spend the night (full board).

A short transfer takes you to the starting point of the final walk of the journey – a true highlight.
You ascend to the Gelidonya Lighthouse, dramatically situated high above the sea. From here, one of the Lycian Way’s most iconic panoramas opens up – the view of the five small rocky islets in the turquoise Mediterranean. The route then continues along coastal paths with impressive views before you finally return to your hotel.

Overnight stay in Adrasan (full board).

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Antalya Airport in time for your flight.
