The route
This tour is moderately challenging and suitable for those with a reasonable level of fitness who enjoy active days in the mountains. The hikes are typically between 5 and 10 km, with 200–400 metres of elevation gain, following well-marked trails across uneven terrain. It's not about how quickly you walk, but about enjoying the landscapes, the views and the freedom of being outdoors. With your own car, you set the pace and can easily adapt your plans to suit the weather and your preferences.
Itinerary
Your journey begins in the charming town of Gjøvik, where you stay at Quality Hotel Strand, beautifully situated on the shores of Lake Mjøsa, Norway's largest lake. Here, you can enjoy views across the water and perhaps even catch a glimpse of Skibladner, the world's oldest paddle steamer still operating a regular service – an icon of Norway's maritime heritage.

After breakfast, you head north through the beautiful Gudbrandsdalen Valley. Along the way, you can stop at the Mammoth sculpture in Fåvang and enjoy a short walk to Tromsa Bridge along the historic King's Road (1.8 km, 90 m elevation gain).
Continue to Ringebu Stave Church, dating back to 1220 – one of Norway's most beautiful historic buildings. From here, you can hike to the Falkestenen viewpoint (4.4 km, 210 m elevation gain), where panoramic views across the valley await.
Finally, the road takes you into the high mountains to Spidsbergseter Høyfjellshotell, 930 metres above sea level. Here, the fresh mountain air and the crackling fireplace set the scene for the adventures ahead.

After a hearty breakfast, you take a short drive to the parking area at Veslefjellvegen, where today's hike begins. The route leads across the open mountain plateau to the beautiful Myfallet waterfall before continuing to the summit of Veslefjell. From the top, you can enjoy sweeping views and the peaceful atmosphere that makes Norway's mountains so special.

Leaving Spidsbergseter, you continue through Atndalen along one of Norway's 18 National Scenic Routes. Stop at Sohlbergplassen, one of Norway's most iconic viewpoints, before enjoying a hike to Fallfossen waterfall and the historic Grimsa Bridge (5.1 km).
Your destination for the day is Hjerkinn Fjellstue, situated 950 metres above sea level and surrounded by rugged mountain scenery and wide-open landscapes stretching as far as the eye can see.

Today's hike begins at the Norwegian Wild Reindeer Centre, where you follow the cultural trail through the mountain landscape to the award-winning Snøhetta Viewpoint. Here, magnificent views open up towards the majestic Snøhetta massif – one of Norway's most iconic mountain ranges. A wonderful day surrounded by nature, tranquillity and the grandeur of the Norwegian mountains.

Today, you return to the same parking area as yesterday, where your guided musk ox safari begins. Accompanied by an experienced guide, you venture into the mountains in search of these remarkable animals, which have survived since the Ice Age. Seeing a musk ox in its natural habitat is an extraordinary wildlife experience and one you are unlikely to forget.

From Hjerkinn, your journey continues west. Stop in Dombås, where Gudbrandsdalen meets Romsdalen – a historic crossroads with a rich cultural heritage. If you have time, visit Kunst i Min Hage, a charming art gallery in this mountain town.
Continue towards Lom, where you can cross the suspension bridge and visit the beautiful Lom Stave Church, dating back to the 12th century.
From here, the road climbs along Sognefjellsvegen, Northern Europe's highest mountain road, to Sognefjellshytta (1,410 metres above sea level), surrounded by towering peaks, glaciers and peaceful mountain landscapes.

Starting from the parking area at Krossbu (parking fees apply), you hike through the rugged mountain landscape towards the impressive Leirbrean Glacier. Along the way, you are rewarded with spectacular views towards Fannaråki, a mountain crowned by its own small glacier.
If the weather is poor, days 8 and 9 can be swapped, as the hike to Leirbrean is best enjoyed in clear conditions.
Please note: Never venture onto the glacier itself, as dangerous crevasses may be hidden beneath the surface.

Starting from the same parking area as yesterday (parking fees apply), today's hike takes you towards Bøverbrean Glacier. Along the route, information boards provide fascinating insights into the history of the glaciers and surrounding mountains. The trail involves crossing a river, and if water levels are high, you may need to turn back and return along the same route.
Today, you also have the option of joining a guided glacier hike or a cave excursion. Ask at Sognefjellshytta for information about the available activities.
Please note: Never walk on the glacier without an authorised guide.

Today, you leave the mountains behind and drive back towards Gjøvik. The journey through the valleys offers beautiful scenery, and once you arrive at Quality Hotel Strand, you can enjoy a relaxing evening – perhaps with a glass of wine and a toast to the mountain adventures you've experienced along the way.

When you book a trip with us, we plant a tree in Kenya.
Bering Travel partners with Growing Trees Network, which has been planting trees in Kenya since 2020 in collaboration with Seniorer uden Grænser (Seniors Without Borders). The trees are planted with small-scale local farmers in the Mount Kenya region, as well as at schools, where the fruit helps supplement students’ diets and is incorporated into their learning.
The trees are planted using the shamba method – a sustainable approach that combines reforestation with agricultural crops. This keeps the soil covered with vegetation throughout the year, helping to prevent nutrient loss and reduce erosion.
The contribution to tree planting comes directly from Bering Travel’s own earnings and is not added to the price of your trip.
This initiative is not intended as a carbon offset for travel, but as a way to make a positive contribution.
