The route
The walks are easy to moderate, with daily stages of around 3–6 hours and options to suit your ability. The routes follow rocky coastlines, uneven paths, mule tracks and quiet paved roads. There are ascents and descents along the way, as well as some steep sections with loose ground. Some stretches are uneven and exposed, so you need to be sure-footed. Sturdy walking shoes are essential, and walking poles are recommended.
The paths are visible but are not consistently well waymarked. There are red markings in a few places, but you will need to follow the route descriptions to find your way. The holiday requires a reasonable level of fitness.
Itinerary
Welcome to Malta! After arriving at your accommodation in Rabat, you can ease into your holiday with a stroll through the historic surroundings. Depending on your arrival time, explore the town or visit the nearby fortified city of Mdina, where narrow streets and limestone houses provide an atmospheric start to your trip.
In Rabat, you can head underground to explore St Paul’s Catacombs or enjoy the town’s lively atmosphere and find a restaurant for your first dinner. The day is yours to settle into the holiday at your own pace.

A transfer takes you to the UNESCO-listed temple complex of Hagar Qim (Ħaġar Qim), where the vast stone structures offer an insight into Malta’s prehistory, dating back to more than 3,000 years BC. After an optional visit to the temples, you begin today’s coastal walk. You follow paths and paved roads with sea views before the route climbs through fields and vineyards towards the Dingli Cliffs.
At the viewpoint, the Mediterranean stretches out before you – an ideal spot to pause and enjoy the view. From here, you can take the local bus back to Rabat or extend your walk and return via the Buskett area.
This additional stretch is not included in today’s distance or walking time.

In the morning, a transfer takes you to Mgarr on Malta, where today’s walk begins. You follow the coast towards Popeye Village, built as a film set for the 1980 musical film Popeye. Today, the village is a theme park. Along the way, you pass a beach below the clay slopes – an ideal spot for a break with sea views and perhaps a swim, if conditions allow.
After the walk, a transfer takes you to Cirkewwa, where you catch the ferry to Gozo. The next part of your trip begins here, among the island’s villages and rocky coastlines. From the harbour, a short transfer takes you to your accommodation in Gharb.

* ferry to be paid for locally
From Gharb, you follow quiet roads through Gozo’s rural landscape towards the coast at Wied il-Ghasri. Along the way, you pass the striking Ta’ Pinu church before the sea becomes your companion for the day. From here, you continue along the coast towards Dwejra Bay, with views of the cliffs and the Mediterranean.
At Dwejra, you can complement your walk with a short boat trip from the small lagoon. You sail through a natural tunnel in the rock and out to sea, where the rocky coastline and caves reveal themselves from a different angle. It is a lovely opportunity to see the landscape you have just explored on foot from the water.*
Alternatively, enjoy a break by the bay before taking the local bus back to Gharb.
For a shorter walk, you can take the included morning transfer to Wied il-Ghasri and begin your walk at the coast. This option is approximately 7 km.
The boat trip is optional and payable in cash on site. Sailings depend on the weather and sea conditions.

A short transfer takes you to Xlendi, where today’s walk begins. From here, you follow the route through fields and farmland, with views of Gozo’s rocky coastline and the Mediterranean. Along the way, you pass through the village of Sannat, where paths briefly give way to paved roads before the route heads back towards the coast.
Mgarr ix-Xini Bay is an ideal spot for a longer break and lunch overlooking the water. If the weather and sea conditions allow, you can also enjoy a swim before lacing up your walking shoes again. The final part of the route follows the ups and downs of the coast towards Mgarr harbour. From here, you take the local bus to Victoria, where you stay for the next three nights and can explore the town after your walk.

You take the local bus to Xlendi, where today’s walk begins with a steep climb to the cliffs above the coast. Sea views reward your efforts before you continue through fields and rural surroundings towards Gozo’s west coast. In several places, farmland stretches right to the cliff edges, and along the way you can enjoy birdsong and changing views of the Mediterranean.
The walk ends at Dwejra Bay, where you can pause and see the rocky landscape from a new angle before taking the local bus back to Victoria.
Please note: During the hunting season from October to January, you may encounter hunters and dogs along the route. You can therefore choose an alternative walk from Zebbug to Marsalforn, exploring Gozo’s north coast and the distinctive salt pans by the sea.

Today, you can enjoy a relaxed day in Victoria or choose between two walks centred around the sea.
Option A – From Marsalforn to Ramla Beach
You take the local bus to Marsalforn and follow the coast towards Ramla Beach, known for its reddish sand. The path winds up and down along the sea, with opportunities to pause by the water along the way. Some sections are steep with loose ground, so take extra care with your footing. At Ramla, you can enjoy the beach and perhaps finish your walk with a swim, if conditions allow.
Option B – Circular walk on Comino
You take the local bus to Mgarr harbour and sail to Comino, the small island between Malta and Gozo. Catch an early boat to give yourselves plenty of time to explore the island. After visiting the Blue Lagoon, you continue on foot around Comino, where rocky paths and open coastal landscapes offer views of the Mediterranean.
After your walk, you sail back to Gozo and return to Victoria by local bus or taxi. Plan your day around current ferry schedules and weather conditions.

The booking process
When you book the trip, we will begin booking hotels and arranging all the practical aspects of your tour. This process typically takes 5–8 working days, but in some cases it may take longer for certain bookings. If you arrange your own transportation, we recommend waiting until we have confirmed your booking before making any arrangements.
Dates
If you can select a date in the trip calendar (in the booking form), then this is a possible start date. We regularly update our trips with sold-out dates; these dates will then appear in red/grey and cannot be selected.
The flights to/from Malta are not included in the price. You can easily find a suitable flight via a flight booking engine such as Momondo or Skyscanner.
Notice: we recommend that you book with us and wait for the confirmation before you book your flights.
It works like this:
- You book your chosen holiday with us
- We confirm your holiday (usually within 3-5 business days)
- You arrange your transportation
Get a quote
If you prefer that we handle your flight, then we would be happy to arrange this for you. You simply book a quote below the map on this page and we will return with a quote as soon as possible (usually within 48 working hours). Please note that we add a handling fee of 45 euro to each flight and this means that the flight will be cheaper if you book it yourself.
Getting there
You fly to Malta International Airport (MLA). Flight connections vary depending on your departure airport, the season and your travel dates.
From the airport, you can take a local bus or taxi to Rabat if you have not booked a transfer. Current bus connections can be found on the Malta Public Transport website.
From Gozo to the airport for your return journey
From Mgarr harbour, you have two options for travelling back to Malta:
- Ferry to Cirkewwa: The crossing takes approximately 25 minutes. From there, the taxi journey to the airport normally takes around 45 minutes.
- High-speed ferry to Valletta: The crossing takes approximately 45 minutes. From the ferry terminal, the taxi journey to the airport normally takes around 25 minutes.
These times cover the ferry crossing and the drive only. You will need to allow additional time for travelling from Victoria to the harbour, waiting, boarding and disembarking. If you use public buses, allow more time.
Check current departures with Gozo Channel and Gozo Highspeed, and allow plenty of time before your flight. Ferry services may be affected by weather conditions.
You stay for 7 nights in 3-star hotels, boutique hotels or B&Bs.
The nights are divided as follows:
- 2 nights in Rabat on Malta
- 2 nights in Għarb on Gozo
- 3 nights in Victoria on Gozo
All rooms have a private bathroom, and breakfast is included.
Breakfast is included every day. It is possible to stock up for the hikes before you set out. Some hotels will also be able to organise a packed lunch for you (for a fee). Dinner is also easy to find in the villages where you stay or at the hotels.
Included is 20kg (1 bag) pr. person
Check with your accommodation host where to leave your bags in the morning. Your luggage must be packed and ready for collection at reception or in the designated storage area by 9:00 am.
Label each bag clearly with your name and the name of your next accommodation, as shown on your accommodation list. This helps the driver deliver your luggage to the correct place and reduces the risk of mix-ups or delays.
If you are unable to walk, ask whether you can travel with the luggage driver. This depends on the vehicle, available space and local passenger transport insurance requirements, so it cannot be guaranteed. A small additional fee may be payable locally.
OBS: When travelling by public transport, you must take your luggage with you unless your travel documents state otherwise.
The walking holiday runs from September to May, allowing you to experience Malta and Gozo through the warmth of autumn, the milder days of winter and the green landscapes of spring. The weather changes throughout the season, giving coastal walking a different character at each time of year.
Autumn
Autumn begins with warm days and average daytime temperatures of around 29 °C in September, falling to around 25 °C in October and 21 °C in November. You can still enjoy sunny walking days, although rain becomes more frequent as autumn progresses. After the rain, the landscape takes on a greener appearance.
Winter
From December to February, average daytime temperatures are around 16–17 °C. These can be pleasant conditions for walking, but you should also expect rain showers, wind and cooler mornings and evenings. The wind can be noticeable on the exposed coastal paths, and wet rocks can be slippery.
Spring
Spring brings gradually warmer days, with average daytime temperatures of around 17 °C in March, 20 °C in April and 24 °C in May. The landscape is often green and in bloom, and rain becomes less frequent. By late spring, the sun can feel strong on stretches with limited shade.
For your walks, we recommend wearing layers and bringing windproof and waterproof clothing, sunscreen, a sun hat and plenty of drinking water. Weather cannot be guaranteed and varies from year to year and from day to day. Check the local forecast shortly before each day’s walk.
After booking this trip, you get access to various discount schemes.
We recommend taking out travel insurance that covers at least illness, accident, repatriation, lost holiday, luggage and liability. As a customer, you are responsible for taking out the necessary travel insurance to cover these costs.
Before taking out insurance, you should check whether you are already covered by travel or cancellation insurance through your home insurance company, credit card or similar - please note that there may be differences in insurance coverage.

When you book a trip with us, we plant a tree in Kenya.
Bering Travel partners with Growing Trees Network, which has been planting trees in Kenya since 2020 in collaboration with Seniorer uden Grænser (Seniors Without Borders). The trees are planted with small-scale local farmers in the Mount Kenya region, as well as at schools, where the fruit helps supplement students’ diets and is incorporated into their learning.
The trees are planted using the shamba method – a sustainable approach that combines reforestation with agricultural crops. This keeps the soil covered with vegetation throughout the year, helping to prevent nutrient loss and reduce erosion.
The contribution to tree planting comes directly from Bering Travel’s own earnings and is not added to the price of your trip.
This initiative is not intended as a carbon offset for travel, but as a way to make a positive contribution.
