The route
The route on the Tour du Mont Blanc passes through varied terrain, from green alpine meadows to steep mountain slopes. The trails are well-marked, but some sections can be rocky and challenging. You will cross high alpine passes and hike along spectacular glaciers and cliffs. The trek is suitable for people with good fitness and experience in mountain hiking.
Itinerary
You start the trip in Chamonix, France.
Chamonix is a little piece of paradise, surrounded by the Mont Blanc massif and filled with the coziest alpine atmosphere. Imagine snow-covered peaks all year round and hiking trails that disappear into a breathtaking landscape. It’s a dream for adventurers and nature lovers.
Hotel (example): Hôtel du Clocher**
You take the cable car to Planpraz, the starting point for your first hike. You will be impressed by the iconic panoramic view of the north face of the Mont Blanc massif, the Bossons Glacier, and the Mer de Glace. Then, follow the balcony trail to the beautifully situated Chéserys Lakes. The hiking day ends with a descent to the small village of Argentière (France), where you will stay overnight.

Le Tour – Col de Balme – Trient
You start the day with a short bus ride to the village of Le Tour (10 minutes, free with the “carte d’hôte,” which you need to request at the hotel). You can choose to hike up via Chalets de Charamillon or take the balcony trail over Posettes to Col de Balme (2200 m) on the border between France and Switzerland. From here, you can enjoy the magnificent views of the surrounding glaciers: Argentière, Le Tour, and the north face of the Mont Blanc massif. Afterwards, the trail descends through lush alpine meadows to the village of Trient (Switzerland).
Overnight in Trient or Col de la Forclaz with half board.

Hotel (example): Col de la Forclaz
Between Trient and Col de la Forclaz, there is a 20-minute walk (+230 m and 1.5 km). This section is therefore deducted from the hiking distance on day 4.
Today, a beautiful and varied hiking stage awaits you. You can choose between two routes, depending on how challenging you want the day to be. The classic route takes you through the idyllic Bovine pastures, where the trail winds through grassy mountain slopes with free-roaming cows and stunning views over the Rhône Valley far below. Along the way, you’ll pass small wooden huts and lush meadows, creating a true alpine atmosphere.
For more experienced hikers, there is the option to take a more “high-alpine” route via la Fenêtre d’Arpette – a spectacular pass at 2,665 meters, surrounded by dramatic rock formations and glacier landscapes. This variant is more demanding, but the reward is unparalleled views of the Trient Glacier and the Swiss Alps.
After the day’s hike, you arrive in Champex, a charming alpine village by a small mountain lake, or at Relais d’Arpette, a cozy spot surrounded by nature. Here you will stay overnight with half board.
Hotel (example): Le Relais Arpette
It’s about a 30-minute walk from Relais d’Arpette to Champex.
After a hearty breakfast, you take a local bus to cross Val Fouly. You then continue your hike up through green pastures to Grand Col Ferret (2,537 m). A detour to Tête Ferret is possible at this point. You will cross not only Grand Col Ferret but also the border between Switzerland and Italy. The trail then descends to the Italian Val Ferret at the foot of Mont Blanc, offering a new perspective of the mountain. The day ends with a short bus ride to Courmayeur.
Hotel (example): Hotel Bouton d'Or***
After breakfast, it’s time for departure.
It is also possible to book an extra night either in Courmayeur or Chamonix. This can be done on the booking page.
From Courmayeur to Chamonix, buses travel through the tunnel (11 km through the mountain massif). The trip takes only 30–40 minutes, including passport control.
NOTE: In 2024 and 2025, the tunnel was closed for renovations from early September to mid-December. It has been announced that the same may happen in the coming years, but this is not officially confirmed. The best place to check is the tunnel’s official website.
When the tunnel is closed, public transport around the massif takes most of a day, and on some days it may not be possible at all.
The alternative is private transfer, but it is expensive. In 2025, it cost approximately €630 per car. The journey takes 2.5 to 3 hours. Prices for 2026 are not yet available.

It is usually a wonderful experience to hike in the Alps during the summer, with sunshine and daytime temperatures around 20–25°C. That said, you should be prepared for temperatures to vary greatly at higher altitudes. Evenings can be cool, with temperatures dropping to 5–10°C, so make sure to bring warm clothing. The weather can also change quickly in the mountains, so be prepared for rain. It is not uncommon for it to snow at higher elevations, even during the summer!
Note: On starting dates from June 15 to July 10, there is an increased risk of snow still melting on the paths from winter, and crampons for hiking boots may be necessary. - Recent years this has happend further into july as well.
