The route
Easy walking along the coast. Some stretches require surefootedness. The daily distances can be shortened by using public transport. A fantastic walking holiday in France.
Itinerary
You arrive in Pontorson, a small town located on the border between Normandy and Brittany, just 9 km from the bay of Mont Saint-Michel. The town is crossed by the Couesnon River and offers beautiful historical details such as its 11th-century Romanesque church and charming old houses.
The evening is at your leisure, and you spend the night at a hotel in Pontorson.

From Pontorson, you follow the Couesnon River out toward the bay, where Mont Saint-Michel slowly rises on the horizon – one of Europe’s most impressive architectural masterpieces. The abbey, the steep rocky island, and the Archangel Michael at the top create a sight that gives any walking day a powerful start.
Plan to spend at least two hours visiting Mont Saint-Michel itself.

You cross the Couesnon River and say goodbye to Normandy – and bonjour to Brittany. Today’s route leads you through polders, farmland reclaimed from the sea through an ingenious system of dikes and canals. The landscape gradually changes to rolling fields, small villages, and green meadows. You pass through Roz-sur-Couesnon and Sainte-Broladre before reaching Dol-de-Bretagne, a beautiful and historic town known for its impressive cathedral and well-preserved half-timbered houses.
Note: Today’s stage can easily be shortened to either 13 km or 17 km. This simply requires taking a taxi to specific points along the route. Details are provided in your walking materials.

The day begins with a short detour to Mont-Dol, where you’ll find a beautiful church and excellent views over the surrounding area. From here, you continue toward the coast, where the oyster beds along the bay reveal Cancale’s proud gastronomic traditions. You arrive in the small fishing town of Cancale, famous throughout France for its oysters, considered among the very best in the country – their unique flavour comes from the mix of sea and river water. Your hotel is perfectly located down by the harbour.
Today, it is also possible to walk a shorter route of approximately 15 km.
Hotel (example): Hôtel Le Querrien***
One of the absolute highlights of the tour. Today’s route follows the most beautiful section of the GR34 out to Pointe du Grouin. Here, you walk along paths with views of small bays, cliffs, and oyster beds – a coastal area known for its varied wildlife and plant life. If the weather is on your side, bringing swimwear is recommended, as there are two lovely beaches along the way. Due to the changing colours of the tides, the return journey is just as scenic as the outward route, even though you follow the same path.

After breakfast, you are driven a little further along the route so that today’s stage has the ideal length. From here, you walk west along the beautiful Emerald Coast. The landscape offers everything from small bays to rock formations and charming viewpoints.
You pass Rothéneuf, known for its hand-carved rock sculptures, and continue toward Plage des Chevrets – a popular spot for both swimmers and naturists. The final stretch leads into Saint-Malo via the long sandy beach of Le Sillon, which takes you directly to your hotel.
This stage can also be shortened to approximately 10 km.

After breakfast, your walking holiday comes to an end. You can either travel home or add an extra night in Saint-Malo to explore the historic fortified town at your own pace.
