Walking holiday in Sweden - Island hopping in and around Stockholm

6 Days / 5 Nights
Easy

Sweden's capital city stretches across 14 islands in the Baltic Sea and has 53 bridges, so it's no wonder Stockholm is known as the Venice of the North. It's water that gives the city its unique character, and on this tour you'll be constantly surrounded by water. You can look forward to a pleasant climate, UNESCO World Heritage sites, beautiful nature as far as the eye can see, archipelago lakes like pearls on a string and culinary highlights. On this tour, you will not only experience the city at its most beautiful, but also its marvellous surroundings.

About the route
Low-difficulty, signposted paths make this route suitable for beginners. You walk for about 3-4.5 hours a day.

The route

The tour follows hiking and forest trails of relatively low difficulty with wonderful views of a number of lakes along the way. The route is mainly flat with a few short climbs. Walking time is approximately 4-7 hours per day, so this walking holiday is suitable for experienced hikers.

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

Take a walk in the capital of Sweden to experience some of the many sights and tourist attractions. In the evening there is a personalised welcome and information.

Stockholm stretches over 14 islands, and today you'll explore three of them: Kungsholmen, Södermalm and the old town, Gamla Stan. Most of the route is along the water, so it's a good idea to take a dip or two along the way. The icing on the cake is Gamla Stan with its grand royal palace, the city's smallest street and a number of great cafés and restaurants where you can sample some of the many Swedish delicacies.

When in Stockholm, you simply have to take the opportunity to experience the archipelago. The day starts with a bus and boat trip to the western part of the island of Vaxön and continues with a hike through a beautiful forest area to the small town of Vaxholm, the ‘capital’ of the archipelago and a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. A visit to the old 16th-century fort is also recommended before travelling back to Stockholm by boat (not included in the price).

Today you'll visit the private residence of the Swedish regent, Drottningholm Palace. This 17th-century castle is one of the best preserved in Sweden and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you can explore the impressive palace halls and stroll through the huge park with its exotic Chinese pavilion and theatre, have lunch and/or a coffee break in the café and restaurant. Afterwards, return to Stockholm by boat or - outside the high season - by bus (not included in the price).

The greenest of all Stockholm's islands is very popular with locals and tourists alike, not least because of the large city national park with several museums, including the Vasa Museum with its incredibly well-preserved 16th-century ship and Skansen, the world's oldest open-air museum. Djurgården (meaning ‘the zoo’) was once part of the royal family's hunting district and there is still a rich plant and animal life on the island.

After breakfast, your holiday is over, but it can be extended with extra nights if desired.

On this journey there is a discount for children and people sharing a room with "two fully paying adults". The amount of discount depends on age; thus:

Children under 5.99 years: free
Children between 6 and 11.99 years: 50% discount
Children between 12 - 14.99 years: 25% discount
People from 15 years and up: 10% discount

Example 1
You are 2 adults and 1 child. Here it's very simple because you're staying in the same room. The child gets a discount compared to the prices above.

Example 2
You are 2 adults and 2 children (aged 5 and 13). Here you have two options. If you want to stay in two double rooms, it will be full price for all participants. If you want to stay in the same room (e.g. a family room), then both children will get a discount (free and 25% discount respectively).

Example 3
You are 2 adults and 3 children (age: 7, 13 and 15). In this case, you will probably need two double rooms where the youngest child sleeps with the parents. Therefore, there will only be a discount for the youngest child aged 7, who will receive a 50% discount.

Example 4
You are 3 adults who want to sleep in the same double room. The extra adult will receive a 10% discount.

Please note
It is important that you understand that it is your own responsibility when you choose to bring children on the tours. You should check the descriptions of the difficulty levels and decide whether the specific tour is suitable for your child.

You can read more about it here.

After booking this trip, you get access to various discount schemes.
