The route
Walking along Kongevegen takes place on historic gravel roads, grassy paths and narrow mountain trails through forests, valleys and open mountain landscapes. The terrain is varied, with ascents, rocky sections and a few exposed stretches. Daily walking distances range from 5–14 km, and the tour is graded easy to moderate, with no particular technical difficulties. A reasonable level of fitness is sufficient, and we recommend sturdy hiking boots and, if possible, walking poles.
Itinerary
Your walking holiday begins in Oslo, where you take the bus towards Tyinkrysset in the beautiful Filefjell region. The bus journey takes you through the Norwegian countryside, offering views of forested valleys, rushing rivers and impressive mountains. Along the way, you can sit back, relax and look forward to the coming days of walking along the historic Kongevegen.
Upon arrival in Tyinkrysset, you will check in at the charming Filefjellstuene, situated approximately 900 metres above sea level. Depending on your arrival time, you may have the opportunity to enjoy a short walk in the surrounding area and get your first taste of Norway's mountain scenery. In the evening, a delicious dinner awaits at the hotel.

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Øye, where today's walk begins at the historic Øye Stave Church. From here, you follow the old Kongevegen, which was constructed in the late 18th century to connect Eastern and Western Norway. The route takes you through beautiful and varied landscapes, where lush forests gradually give way to open mountain plateaus.
Along the way, you will mainly walk on grassy and gravel paths, with the scenery becoming increasingly impressive as you approach the Filefjell plateau. Here, you can enjoy views of the surrounding mountains and experience the contrast between the green valleys and the more rugged highland terrain. Today's walk ends at Filefjellstuene, where you will spend another night.

Today, you will experience one of the most beautiful high-altitude sections of Kongevegen. After breakfast, you will be transferred to Maristuen, where you begin your walk across Filefjell. The route takes you through open mountain terrain with sweeping views and a special sense of tranquillity that can only be found high in the Norwegian mountains.
Along the way, you will reach the highest point of Kongevegen at 1,247 metres above sea level. On clear days, you can enjoy spectacular views towards the jagged peaks of Hurrungane. This section also reveals the impressive engineering involved in constructing Kongevegen. The road was built according to French engineering principles, which favoured the straightest possible route rather than following the natural contours of the landscape. Upon arrival in Kyrkjestølen, you will be picked up and transferred back to Filefjellstuene.

After breakfast, you leave Filefjellstuene and are transferred to the Borgund area, where today's walk begins. Your luggage will be transported to your next hotel, allowing you to concentrate fully on the day's experiences. The walk starts at Rimskjold, where you follow the historic Sverrestigen, named after the Norwegian King Sverre. According to local history, the king used this trail to avoid farmers who were lying in wait to attack him.
The route continues to the famous Borgund Stave Church, dating from around 1180. The church is one of Norway's best-preserved stave churches and an impressive example of medieval wooden architecture. We recommend taking the time to visit the church and its accompanying exhibition (entrance fee not included). Afterwards, you continue along the spectacular Vindhellavegen, whose characteristic hairpin bends have made it one of the most iconic sections of Kongevegen. Today's walk finishes at the historic Husum Hotel, where you will stay for the next two nights.

On the final walking day of your holiday, you will explore another fascinating section of Kongevegen. From Husum Hotel, you set off along Øygardsvegen towards Seltåsen before continuing on a circular route through the historic landscape around Galdane. Here, the trails wind through lush surroundings with steep mountainsides, rushing waterfalls and beautiful views across the valley.
Along the way, you will pass old smallholdings, historic road sections and places surrounded by local legends and stories. The area also contains remains of German defensive positions from the Second World War, offering an insight into the valley's more recent history. The walk combines beautiful natural scenery with fascinating cultural heritage before you return to Husum Hotel. Here, you can enjoy a well-deserved dinner and spend your final evening in the Norwegian mountains.

After breakfast, it is time to say goodbye to Kongevegen and the beautiful Norwegian mountain landscapes. You will receive a packed lunch for the journey and take the bus back towards Oslo.
Along the way, you can enjoy your final views of Norway's mountains and valleys while reflecting on six days filled with historic walking routes, spectacular scenery and memorable experiences.
Your walking holiday ends upon arrival in Oslo. You also have the option of extending your stay with an additional night in the Norwegian capital if you would like to explore a little more before travelling home.

Over the years, it has hosted several famous Norwegian cultural figures, including Edvard Grieg and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson. When you book a trip with us, we plant a tree in Kenya.
Bering Travel partners with Growing Trees Network, which has been planting trees in Kenya since 2020 in collaboration with Seniorer uden Grænser (Seniors Without Borders). The trees are planted with small-scale local farmers in the Mount Kenya region, as well as at schools, where the fruit helps supplement students’ diets and is incorporated into their learning.
The trees are planted using the shamba method – a sustainable approach that combines reforestation with agricultural crops. This keeps the soil covered with vegetation throughout the year, helping to prevent nutrient loss and reduce erosion.
The contribution to tree planting comes directly from Bering Travel’s own earnings and is not added to the price of your trip.
This initiative is not intended as a carbon offset for travel, but as a way to make a positive contribution.
