The essentials at a glance

Self-guided hiking adventure through Jotunheimen National Park with 6 days of challenging trails covering approximately 65 km. Experience spectacular mountain landscapes, pristine lakes, and traditional Norwegian mountain lodges. The route includes highlights like Bitihorn peak (1,607m), the dramatic Svartedalen valley, and scenic boat crossings on Lake Bygdin. Accommodation in mountain inns and DNT lodges with most meals included.

Norway's most beautiful national park awaits you with incredible experiences and sights. As you hike across Scandinavia's highest mountain range, you'll experience the magical landscape of the north in full bloom: great waterfalls, an unspoiled mountain landscape, turquoise mountain lakes and countless small rivers and streams lie at your feet in this magnificent and unique landscape - also called "Home of the Giants".

During the days you will hike through dense birch forests, enjoy the sight of untouched moors and reach the most beautiful viewpoints. In the evening, enjoy the tranquillity of the Norwegian refuges. The aroma of traditional waffles and fragrant coffee in front of the fireplace will be something you remember forever.

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

You arrive in Norway's capital, Oslo, where you check into your hotel. Spend the rest of the day exploring the city and enjoying its many sights.

Hotel (example): Thon Hotel Astoria

A beautiful bus journey takes you from the Oslofjord and up into the mountains. After your arrival in the heart of Jotunheim National Park, you can either choose to take a short leisurely hike to the top of Synshorn and enjoy the view there, or you can hike along Lake Bygdin. Whatever you choose, prepare to have all your senses open to the wild Norwegian nature.

Hotel (example): Bygdin Høifieldshotell

Today, explore the area's highest peak and hike across vast plateaus to Bithorn (1,607m), where you can enjoy magnificent views of rugged ridges and glistening mountain lakes. After enjoying the beautiful scenery, you can have a nice cup of coffee in the town café or enjoy the view of the area from the hotel terrace.

Hotel (example): Bygdin Høifieldshotell

After breakfast you are on the boat, which takes you quietly across Lake Bygdin. In the so-called "Svartedalen" (Black Valley) you will experience the Norwegian mountain landscape with small winding paths framed by the magnificent mountains and interrupted by small streams and large waterfalls. In Gjendebu you will spend the night in a traditional mountain cabin owned by the Norwegian Tourist Association.

Hotel (example): Gjendebu DNT

Depending on your preference, you can either hike to Gjendetunga (1,516 m), from where you can enjoy views of Gjende and the surrounding glaciers. Alternatively, you can take the boat to the Memurubu mountain hut and from there walk the spectacular high alpine trail via Bukkelægeret back to Gjendebu. In the evening you can relax and enjoy the warmth of the fireplace while chatting with hikers from all over the world.

Hotel (example): Gjendebu DNT

This walking day starts idyllically with a walk through dense birch forest, which is full of life - including many birds. You'll follow the rushing Veslåe River and head uphill via Fjellheide and if you're lucky, you might see a reindeer! Today's hike is generally a moderate one without the big climbs and descents. Most of the hike is on soft ground and along the way there are beautiful views of many of Jotunheimen's highest peaks.  After arriving at the shores of Lake Bygdin, you can continue to idyllic Eidsbugarden.

Hotel (example): Fondsbu DTN

As a perfect end to the hiking part of this tour, we suggest that you take a detour to the viewpoint "Utsikten" before boarding the boat back to Bygdin. This way you can enjoy the beauty of the amazing Jotunheimen National Park one last time. You will return by bus to Oslo's Old Town, where you can enjoy life and look back on an unforgettable walking holiday in Norway.

Hotel (example): Thon Hotel Astoria

The journey is now over. You leave the hotel in the morning and head home or further afield.

When you book a trip with us, we plant a tree in Kenya.

Bering Travel partners with Growing Trees Network, which has been planting trees in Kenya since 2020 in collaboration with Seniorer uden Grænser (Seniors Without Borders). The trees are planted with small-scale local farmers in the Mount Kenya region, as well as at schools, where the fruit helps supplement students’ diets and is incorporated into their learning.

The trees are planted using the shamba method – a sustainable approach that combines reforestation with agricultural crops. This keeps the soil covered with vegetation throughout the year, helping to prevent nutrient loss and reduce erosion.

The contribution to tree planting comes directly from Bering Travel’s own earnings and is not added to the price of your trip.

This initiative is not intended as a carbon offset for travel, but as a way to make a positive contribution.
