Walking Holiday from Hardangervidda to the Sognefjord

7 Days / 6 Nights
Moderate to Challenging
Hiker with orange backpack crossing wooden bridge over mountain stream in Aurlandsdalen valley, with dark mountain lake and green slopes below.

The essentials at a glance

Self-guided walking tour from Hardangervidda to Sognefjord through varied mountain terrain. The route covers approximately 61 km over 5 walking days, passing Hardangerjøkulen glacier, Skarvheimen mountains, and the famous Aurlandsdalen valley. Accommodation in mountain lodges with meals included. Train from Oslo to Finse and bus return included. Moderate to challenging difficulty with daily distances of 10-17 km on marked trails through rocky and hilly terrain.

On this walking holiday in Norway, you will discover some of the country's most spectacular landscapes as you make your way from the vast mountain plateau of Hardangervidda through the beautiful Aurlandsdalen Valley to Sognefjord. Your journey begins in Finse, where the open mountain scenery and impressive Hardangerjøkulen glacier set the stage for your first days of walking. From here, you continue through the rugged mountains of Skarvheimen, passing sparkling mountain lakes, rushing streams and magnificent mountain views before the landscape gradually gives way to lush green valleys.

One of the highlights of the holiday is the walk through Aurlandsdalen, considered one of Norway's most beautiful walking routes. Here, the trails wind between steep mountainsides, dramatic gorges and impressive waterfalls, while old, abandoned mountain farms offer a glimpse into the lives of those who once called this valley home. Along the way, you stay in traditional Norwegian mountain lodges, where the welcoming atmosphere and beautiful surroundings are part of the experience. The journey ends in the small fjord village of Flåm, surrounded by towering mountains at the head of Aurlandsfjord, an arm of the mighty Sognefjord.

Highlights of the trip

  • From mountains to fjords – Experience the incredible diversity of Norway's landscapes, from the open mountain plateau of Hardangervidda to lush valleys and deep fjords.
  • Walking through Aurlandsdalen – Follow one of Norway's most famous walking routes past rushing waterfalls, steep gorges and historic mountain farms.
  • Hardangerjøkulen and Skarvheimen – Enjoy views of the impressive glacier, beautiful mountain lakes and dramatic mountain scenery.
  • Traditional Norwegian mountain lodges – Experience the welcoming atmosphere of cosy mountain lodges, delicious food and authentic Norwegian mountain culture.

The route

The route follows marked mountain trails through varied and hilly terrain, including rocky sections, ascents and longer descents. Some parts of the trail are narrow and exposed, and you may need to cross small streams along the way. Daily walking distances range from 10–17 km, and the holiday requires a reasonable level of fitness and some experience of walking on uneven terrain. We recommend sturdy walking boots and trekking poles.

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

Your journey begins in Oslo, where you board the train to Finse. The train ticket is included in the holiday price. The journey takes approximately 4½ hours along the famous Bergen Railway, passing through beautiful Norwegian scenery as green valleys gradually give way to open mountain landscapes. Along the way, you get a wonderful introduction to the scenery that awaits you over the coming days.

Finse is located in the heart of Hardangervidda and can only be reached by train, on foot or by bicycle. From the railway station, it is approximately a 700-metre walk to Finsehytta, where you will spend the night. Here, you can enjoy views of the mountains and the Hardangerjøkulen glacier before sitting down to dinner and preparing for your first day of walking.

Today, your walking adventure truly begins with a beautiful route from Finsehytta towards Blåisen at the impressive Hardangerjøkulen glacier. The trail takes you through an open mountain landscape with rocky paths, small streams and views of the glacier's blue ice. Getting this close to one of Norway's great glaciers is a special experience, but you must stay off the ice itself, as walking on a glacier requires specialist equipment and an experienced guide.

After the walk, you return to Finse, where you can visit the small outdoor museum and learn more about the area's history. The rest of the afternoon is yours to relax at the mountain lodge and enjoy the surroundings.

After breakfast, you leave Finse and continue into the beautiful mountain landscapes of Skarvheimen. The route passes Sankt Pål and features a mixture of ascents and descents across the open mountain plateau. To the south, you can enjoy views of Hardangerjøkulen, while the mountains of Skarvheimen and Jotunheimen stretch out to the north.

Along the way, you pass several beautiful mountain lakes, and the area around Omnsvatnet is an ideal place to stop for lunch and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Today's destination is Geiterygghytta, situated at an altitude of 1,224 metres and surrounded by magnificent scenery. Here, a delicious meal and a cosy evening in an authentic Norwegian mountain atmosphere await.

Hotel (example): Geiterygghytta

Today, you continue towards Aurlandsdalen, and the landscape gradually begins to change. The trails lead through the valley with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and green valley slopes. Part of the route follows a smaller trail higher up the mountainside, offering wonderful panoramic views of the landscape below.

The main route for today passes Kongshelleren and covers approximately 17 km. This option takes you through wilder and more remote mountain terrain, offering even more opportunities to enjoy the natural surroundings. If you prefer a shorter walking day, you can instead follow the more direct route through the valley, covering approximately 10 km.

Your destination is Steinbergdalshytta, a traditional mountain lodge dating back to 1895, where you can look forward to a home-cooked meal and a relaxing evening.

Hotel (example): Steinbergdalshytta

Today's walk takes you deeper into Aurlandsdalen, where the scenery becomes increasingly green and dramatic. The trail follows the valley slopes, offering beautiful views across the valley and towards the surrounding mountains. Although this is a relatively short stage, the route crosses hilly terrain with several ascents and descents before reaching Østerbø.

As today's walk is not particularly long, there is plenty of time to enjoy the scenery along the way. It may also be possible to arrange a morning fishing trip with your host at Steinbergdalshytta. You will spend the night at Aurlandsdalen Turisthytte, which has welcomed walkers since 1894 and enjoys a beautiful setting in the heart of the valley.

Hotel (example): Aurlandsdalen Turisthytte

Today brings what may well be the highlight of the entire holiday as you walk through the famous Aurlandsdalen Valley. Considered one of Norway's most beautiful walking routes, the trail takes you through dramatic scenery with steep mountainsides, deep gorges, rushing waterfalls and lush green slopes. Along the way, you pass old, abandoned mountain farms that tell the story of life in the valley over generations.

The trail is predominantly downhill, but the terrain is varied and requires care along the way. After a rewarding day of walking, you arrive in Vassbygdi, where you take the pre-booked bus to Flåm. Here, the mountain scenery gives way to the fjords, and you check in at Heimly Guesthouse, close to Aurlandsfjord. Enjoy your final evening with views of the fjord and the impressive surrounding mountains.

Hotel (example): Heimly Guesthouse Flåm

After breakfast, it is time to say goodbye to Flåm and the Norwegian mountains. Today, you travel back to Oslo by bus, with the ticket included in the holiday price. Along the way, you can enjoy your final views of Norway's beautiful landscapes, passing mountains, valleys and charming little villages.

If you would like to extend your experience, it is also possible to finish your journey in Bergen instead of Oslo. You can choose between travelling by bus or enjoying a scenic boat journey through the fjords from Flåm to Bergen. Both options are available at an additional cost. Your walking holiday from Hardangervidda to Sognefjord comes to an end upon arrival in Oslo.

If you are arranging your own transport, we recommend that you wait until we have confirmed your booking before arranging this.

Dates

The trip starts in Oslo, where you take the train to Finse on the Hardangervidda mountain plateau. The train ticket from Oslo to Finse is included in the price, as is the bus ticket from Flåm back to Oslo on the final day. Travel to and from Oslo is not included and must be arranged independently.

We recommend waiting until your trip has been confirmed before booking flights or other transport arrangements (confirmation normally takes 5–8 working days).

By plane
The most convenient option for most international travellers is to fly to Oslo Airport (Gardermoen), which has connections to many European cities and international destinations.

From Oslo Airport, you can take the airport train or a regional train to Oslo Central Station (Oslo S). From here, you continue on the included train journey to Finse. The scenic railway journey takes approximately 4½ hours and passes through beautiful Norwegian countryside before reaching the mountain plateau.

Make sure your flight arrives early enough to allow sufficient time for the onward train connection. Depending on your arrival time, you may wish to add an extra night in Oslo before the hiking holiday begins.

By car
If you prefer to travel by car, you can drive to Oslo and park there for the duration of the trip. From Oslo, you take the included train to Finse, where the hiking holiday begins.

On the final day, the included bus takes you from Flåm back to Oslo, allowing you to collect your car.

Driving closer to Finse
If you would like to reduce the train journey, you can drive to Haugastøl Station instead. This is the closest railway station to Finse that can be reached by car. From Haugastøl, the train journey to Finse takes approximately 20 minutes.

Haugastøl Station has 49 parking spaces, with free parking for train passengers for up to 14 days. Parking spaces cannot be guaranteed.

Please note that the hiking holiday ends in Flåm. If you leave your car at Haugastøl, you can return by taking the famous Flåm Railway from Flåm to Myrdal, followed by a connecting train to Haugastøl.

This arrangement differs from the transport included in the standard holiday package and must be arranged separately. Any additional transport costs are not included in the price.

On this walking holiday, you will spend 6 nights in traditional Norwegian mountain lodges and a charming guesthouse by the fjord in Flåm. Along the way, you will stay at Finsehytta, Geiterygghytta, Steinbergdalshytta and Aurlandsdalen Turisthytte. Here, you can experience authentic Norwegian mountain lodge culture, with cosy communal areas, good food and a relaxed atmosphere where hikers gather after a day on the trails.

The rooms in the mountain lodges are simple and usually furnished with bunk beds, while toilets and bathrooms are shared with other guests. On your final night, you will stay at Heimly Guesthouse in Flåm, where you will have a room with a private bathroom and a lovely location close to the Aurlandsfjord.

Single rooms
Single rooms can be requested for an additional supplement. However, please note that single rooms cannot be guaranteed in the mountain lodges. The lodges have a long-standing tradition of never turning away hikers who need accommodation. As a result, you may occasionally have to share a room with another hiker, even if you have booked and paid for a single room.

For safety reasons, this walking holiday cannot be booked by solo travellers. A minimum of two participants travelling together is required.

This walking holiday includes 6 breakfasts, 5 packed lunches and 6 dinners. Meals are served at the cosy mountain lodges and accommodation along the route, where the food is often prepared using local ingredients and inspired by traditional Norwegian cuisine.

Breakfast: A breakfast buffet is served at your accommodation each morning, giving you a good start before heading out on the trails.

Lunch: A packed lunch is included on all five hiking days. You prepare your own packed lunch from the breakfast buffet and take it with you on your walk. In the Bering Travel app, you can also find information about possible places to eat along the route. Please note that the app does not display current opening hours, so we recommend checking these in advance if you plan to stop for food along the way. It is also a good idea to bring some extra snacks for your hiking days.

Dinner: Dinner is included on all six evenings and is served at your accommodation. At the mountain lodges, you can look forward to hearty meals, particularly welcome after a day exploring the mountains. Drinks with dinner are generally not included.

Local specialities
Traditional Norwegian mountain cuisine is based on simple, quality ingredients and time-honoured recipes. During your holiday, you may come across dishes such as rømmegrøt, a rich, creamy porridge made with soured cream, and spekemat, a selection of cured meats often served with local cheeses. Norway's distinctive brown cheese, brunost, is also worth trying, preferably on a slice of freshly baked bread. Many mountain lodges take pride in their homemade cooking, and enjoying a slice of Norwegian cake with an afternoon coffee is another lovely local tradition.

Luggage transfer is included on this tour. Upon arrival at the first hotel you will be given luggage tags along with the rest of the welcome package. You fill out the luggage tags and put them on your bags where they will remain for the duration of the tour.

Your luggage is picked up from the hotel lobby around 9am every morning and will arrive at your next hotel at 6pm at the latest (often long before that). If there are any special exceptions to the luggage transfer you will be notified upon arrival.

Luggage transfer includes one bag per guest and the bags can weigh 20kg each.

When you book a trip with us, we plant a tree in Kenya.

Bering Travel partners with Growing Trees Network, which has been planting trees in Kenya since 2020 in collaboration with Seniorer uden Grænser (Seniors Without Borders). The trees are planted with small-scale local farmers in the Mount Kenya region, as well as at schools, where the fruit helps supplement students’ diets and is incorporated into their learning.

The trees are planted using the shamba method – a sustainable approach that combines reforestation with agricultural crops. This keeps the soil covered with vegetation throughout the year, helping to prevent nutrient loss and reduce erosion.

The contribution to tree planting comes directly from Bering Travel’s own earnings and is not added to the price of your trip.

This initiative is not intended as a carbon offset for travel, but as a way to make a positive contribution.
