Easy trekking in the Atlas Mountains and days in Marrakech

A lovely trekking tour in the Atlas Mountains

8 Days / 7 Nights
Moderate to Challenging
Stone shelter with wooden door on mountainside in Morocco's Toubkal region, overlooking dramatic valley with layered mountains under cloudy sky.

The essentials at a glance

Trekking adventure in Morocco's Atlas Mountains with moderate difficulty, hiking 4-6 hours daily through Berber villages and mountain passes up to 2,489m. The route includes stays in traditional guesthouses and lodges in Imlil, Tacheddirt, Matat, and Aït Aïssa, followed by three nights in Marrakech to explore the medina, souks, and historic sites. Guided trek with local cook and muleteer, covering approximately 47km over four days with varied terrain and panoramic valley views.

Morocco is a place that everyone should experience. On this journey you will see the impressive mountains with the authentic berber-villages and the old royal city of Marrakech with all it's sounds, scents and experiences. This tour starts in the mountain village of Imlil which is considered to be the gateway to the High Atlas Mountains. This is where most of the trekking tours in the Atlas Mountains start.

While your luggage is being transported on mules,  you will calmly walk along small paths, through berber-villages where the local hospitality will make a big impression. During the walk, your guide will tell you about the area, the villages, and present you for the local customs. Besides your private guide, you will also have a cook with you on the trek who will delight you with exciting local dishes.

After finishing your walk in the mountains it is time to visit the colorful city of Marrakech. You are free to decide what you want to do and we are convinced that you will not get bored.

The route

Moderate to Challenging

This tour is well suited for those who wish to enjoy an active holiday in the mountains without overly demanding stages. The days include gentle to moderate ascents in varied terrain, with good breaks along the way. You typically hike 4–6 hours per day, following trails and small gravel roads. A reasonable level of fitness and a willingness to walk in hilly terrain are required, but there are no technical sections and no need for special equipment.

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

Upon arrival at Marrakech Airport, you are met and driven away from the city’s vibrant buzz and towards the impressive Atlas Mountains. The journey to Imlil takes you from the flat, warm plains surrounding Marrakech into a more dramatic and green mountain landscape, where small villages cling to the hillsides and terraced fields reflect generations of hard work.

Once you arrive in the small mountain village of Imlil, you will immediately notice the slower pace. The air feels fresher, the silence more present, and the views of the surrounding peaks are truly impressive. After arrival, you have time to settle in, explore the village and let your first impressions sink in. Perhaps enjoy a cup of mint tea in the sun while taking in the view and looking forward to the days ahead in the mountains.

You start the day early with breakfast before setting off on your hike. The trail gradually leads uphill through small Berber villages and past terraced fields.

Your goal for the morning is Tizi n’Tamatert Pass at 2,289 metres. The ascent is steady and manageable, and as you gain height the views open up more and more. From the pass, you are rewarded with spectacular panoramic views over both the Imlil Valley and the wide Imnane Valley. Here you enjoy lunch in the open air, surrounded by impressive mountain scenery.

After your break, you continue towards the village of Tacheddirt, beautifully located in the Imnane Valley, where you can relax and enjoy the peaceful mountain atmosphere.

Today offers a pleasant and mostly downhill hike towards Matat. You follow trails that wind through open mountain landscapes at a relaxed pace, allowing plenty of time to enjoy the surroundings.

Along the way, you pass small, authentic villages such as Ouanskra, Tamguist, Ikkis and Amsakrou. Earth-coloured houses blend into the mountainsides, and you may encounter local shepherds or glimpse everyday life in the valley.

Gradually, the landscape opens up again before you reach Matat, where you spend the night in peaceful surroundings framed by the soft silhouettes of the Atlas Mountains.

After an early breakfast, you set off southwest from Matat through varied and open mountain terrain. The day begins with a steady ascent towards Tizi n’Elbour Pass.

You then continue through a quiet area of dry riverbeds and green patches between the rugged mountain slopes before beginning the climb to Tizi Oudid Pass at approximately 2,200 metres. From the top, you are rewarded with beautiful views over both the Azzaden Valley and the Imlil Valley – a perfect place to stop for lunch and take in the scenery.

After lunch, you follow a small gravel road that gradually leads you onwards to Ait Aïssa, where you spend the night in peaceful, scenic surroundings.

Hotel (example): Lodge in the mountains

After breakfast, you leave Ait Aïssa and begin your final hiking day in the Atlas Mountains. The trail climbs towards Tizi Mezik Pass at 2,489 metres. The pace is steady, and along the way the landscape once again opens up with wide-ranging views.

From the pass, you enjoy another impressive view over the Imlil Valley before descending towards Imlil, where you have a well-deserved lunch.

Later, you are transferred back to Marrakech. The contrast between the silence of the mountains and the lively atmosphere of the city is striking. Upon arrival, you check into your riad and have the rest of the day free to explore at your own pace.

Hotel (example): Riad Omar

You now have time to explore Marrakech at your leisure. The city offers colourful souks, historic palaces, beautiful gardens and vibrant squares.

Wander through the narrow streets of the medina, enjoy the view from a rooftop terrace, or visit Djemaa el-Fna Square as it fills with life in the evening. If you wish to gain deeper insight into the city’s history and culture, a guided city tour can be arranged.

Hotel (example): Riad Omar

You have one more day to immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of Marrakech. Perhaps you would like to visit one of the peaceful gardens, explore more of the souks, or relax at a café while watching the city life unfold.

Marrakech offers an abundance of experiences, and this extra day gives you the opportunity to discover even more of this fascinating city.

The holiday in Morocco is now over. You are transferred to the airport at a time that matches your flight details.

The booking process

This process typically takes 5–8 working days, but in some cases it may take longer for certain bookings. If you arrange your own transportation, we recommend waiting until we have confirmed your booking before making any arrangements.

Dates
If you can select a date in the trip calendar (in the booking form), then this is a possible start date. We regularly update our trips with sold-out dates; these dates will then appear in red/grey and cannot be selected.

In Imlil, you will be accommodated in a lodge where you'll have a double room with a private bathroom/toilet. In the villages, you'll stay in local guesthouses in double rooms with shared bathroom/toilet facilities. On the hiking part of the trip, it is necessary to bring a sleeping bag during the winter months (November to April), while in the summer months a sleeping sheet (May to October) is sufficient – this can also be rented from us.

The small guesthouses lack heating, which can result in cold conditions in January/February.

In Marrakech, you'll stay in a so-called "riad," which is a traditional Moroccan house with a courtyard in the middle open to the sky. The décor typically features warm natural colors, lots of cushions, mosaics, furniture, and wrought-iron railings. The riad is within walking distance to Djemaa el Fna square and the souk.

On the booking form, you can choose to upgrade the nights in Marrakech to Superior rooms at Riad Africa.

While you are in the mountains, all meals are included. You'll have a private chef with you on the trip, who will ensure good food for you. If you have any special dietary requests, simply note them in the message field when booking your trip.

In Marrakech, breakfast is included, and you'll find a variety of dining options very close by.

A typical day of trekking begins with a wake-up time between 06:00am to 6:30am. Once you are dressed and have eaten breakfast, you will pack your luggage and start walking around 08:00 am. Around noon you will have a nice long lunch break before continuing on the afternoon walking stretch. You will usually arrive at the place of accommodation in the afternoon.

This journey has difficulty level 2

Grade 2
Easy hiking on reasonably good trails. The day walks will last 4-6 hours in hilly terrain. Anyone in good physical condition can participate. Your luggage will be transported and you only carry a light daypack. Requires comfortable footwear such as trekking shoes or hiking boots.

Read more about our grading system here.

It is possible to bring children on this trip, and if you do, we will provide extra mules so they have something to ride on if they get tired. Depending on the number of mules we have, it may be necessary for the children to take turns riding.

Because the children must be able to sit on a mule by themselves, we do not recommend bringing children under 6 years old.

It is important to be aware that it is your own responsibility when you choose to bring children on the trips. You should check the descriptions of the difficulty levels and assess whether the specific trip is suitable for your child.
