The route
This tour follows along mainly good trails (military and shepherd trails). In addition, there will be short sections on gravel roads and smaller town roads.
There are some steep and rocky ascents and descents, approx. 500 - 900 height meters daily.
Itinerary
Arrive in Kotor at your own pace – or let us arrange a private transfer from Dubrovnik, Podgorica, or Tivat airport. You’ll spend the first three nights in charming Kotor, right by the bay.
Hotel (example): Hotel Marija
Today’s adventure takes you to the serene Mount Vrmac, standing proudly between the inner Bay of Kotor and the Bay of Tivat. You’ll follow the famous zig-zag trail, named after Emperor Franz-Josef, up to the Austro-Hungarian fortress “Vrmac” from 1892. From there, continue along the ridge to the peak Sveti Ilija (765 m). Your descent follows a shepherd’s path into the village of Donji Stoliv – the perfect place for a well-deserved coffee by the calm bay waters.

A new day, a new mountain! Start in the village of Orahovac and hike up through lush forests to Stepen. Here, another Austro-Hungarian relic awaits: Vranovo Brdo fortress. From there, descend via a historic military road to Perast. A short boat ride gives you the chance to visit the famous island church Our Lady of the Rock, before continuing by boat to Tivat and transferring back to Kotor.

Step back in time! From Kotor’s old town, you’ll ascend the famous “Ladder of Kotor” – an old trade route with 70+ switchbacks once used to transport goods (and even billiard tables!) between Cetinje and Kotor. The views over the bay are spectacular. At the end, reward yourselves with Njeguši ham and cheese in the village of Njeguši, before a transfer takes you to your overnight stay in Lovcen National Park.
Hotel (example): Hotel Monte Rosa
Start directly from your hotel and follow the old trail into Lovcen National Park. Here, the highlight is the Njegusi Mausoleum on Jezerski Vrh, offering panoramic views (entrance optional). Enjoy lunch at the nearby restaurant before walking back to your hotel, where a transfer awaits to take you to Cetinje – Montenegro’s former royal capital. Overnight in Cetinje.

A short transfer brings you to Rijeka Crnojevica. A relaxing boat trip introduces you to Lake Skadar’s rich birdlife – with over 280 species, including the rare Dalmatian pelican. Back on land, follow the river past an old power station, mill ruins, and into a daylight-lit cave. On the way back, take a refreshing swim and enjoy local cuisine in the village before transferring to Sveti Stefan (high season) or Budva (spring/autumn).
Hotel (example): Hotel Oaza
Today’s hike treats you to sweeping views above the Budva Riviera. Pause at Ogradnica church before descending towards Sveti Stefan, an islet famous for its luxury resort and stunning views. A perfect place to end the hike – and to snap that postcard photo. Overnight in Budva or Sveti Stefan.

Time to say farewell! We can arrange private transfers to Dubrovnik, Podgorica, or Tivat airport.
