Variations of this tour
The route
The hikes take place in mountain terrain. Each day, it is possible to choose between a shorter and a longer route. We recommend that hikers on this tour are in good physical condition and able to manage significant daily elevation gains. On Day 2, there are sections that may be challenging for people with a fear of heights (see photos). It is possible to take an alternative route to avoid the challenging section.
Itinerary
You arrive at the first hotel in Dobbiaco/Toblach or in Niederdorf/Villabassa. If you arrive early enough, you will have time for a short walk through the town.
Hotel (example): Aparthotel Germania***

After breakfast you are transferred to the start of your walk. Your walking holiday starts by the mountain lake Lago di Braies or Pragser Wildsee that will fascinate you with its turquoise water. Here you get the first impression of Prague Valley with dark coniferous forests against the white cliffs. You continue to pastures of Rossalm and reach the plateau Prato Piazza / Plätzwiese where the mountains Dürrenstein and Hohe Gaisl rise. From here there are magnificent views. In the distance you will see the mountains Cristallo, Tofana and the world famous Three Peaks of Lavaredo.
If you do not wish to walk that far, you can choose a shorter route, which starts at the Tuscherhof Inn. You will follow the river Stolla and pass small mountain hotels and rock formations shaped by wind and water before you reach the grassy areas of Prato Piazza / Plätzwiese, for your overnight stay.
Long trip: approx. 14km / approx. 6-7 hours (approx. +1.000m. / -430m)
Hotel (example) Hotel Hohe Gaisl***
Important to note: Hohe Gaisl is the only hotel in this area. This means that, especially during the peak summer season, it may occasionally be fully booked. As an alternative, we have the option to book hotels in scenic surroundings closer to Prags. Staying there will require a bus transfer to and from the hiking route, but the bus runs from around 8 AM to 6 PM with departures approximately every hour. If we need to use this solution, we will of course ask for your approval first and explain in detail what it means for your trip.

Today you can decide whether you wish to walk the long or the short route. You can hike to the top of either Strudelkopf at 2,307m / 7,568ft (short) or Dürrenstein 2,839m / 9,314ft (long), both located in the Dolomites largest nature reserve, Fanes Sennes Braies.
You start from Pratopiazza / Plätzwiese that together with the mountains Croda Rossa / Hohe Gaisl and Kreuzkofelgruppe is a lovely nature and hiking area of the Dolomites. Along the way on both routes there are beautiful views of the Hohe Gaisl, Three Peaks of Lavaredos, Tofana and Monte Cristallo.
Long trip: approx. 9km / approx. 4-5 hours (approx. +850m / -850m)
Hotel (example): Hotel Hohe Gaisl***

The hike continues over Pratopiazza / Plätzwiese and down through Knappenfuss Valley (Valle dei canopi) to the saddle Cimabanche / Gemark, which forms the border between South Tyrol and Belluno. From here you can go directly to Cortina d'Ampezzo, or choose a longer route past the mountain hut Ra Stua and around the foot of the mountain Col Rosa, before you reach Cortina, located at the bottom of the valley between the mountains.
You will spend one night in Cortina and may wish to stroll around the streets, where little shops lie side by side with cozy cafes and restaurants.
Lang tur: approx. 22km / approx. 6-7 hours (approx. +483m / -1.170m)
Hotel (example): Meuble Villa Neve

In the morning, you take the local bus to the viewpoint at the Three Peaks. From there, you hike across the Rienzböden and continue through the Rienztal valley up to the majestic Three Peaks, the most iconic landmark of the Dolomites and part of the UNESCO World Heritage list.
The hike then continues to the famous Dreizinnen Hut, before the trail leads beneath Mount Paternkofel, which was a battlefield during the First World War – it was here that the legendary mountain guide Sepp Innerkofler lost his life. The route ends in the Fischleintal valley, where the bus takes you back to Toblach. Alternatively, you can hike from the Three Peaks viewpoint to Rifugio Auronzo and from there return to Toblach by bus.
Long trip: approx. 15km / approx. 5-6 hours (approx. +950m / -960m)
Hotel (exampel): Aparthotel Germania***

Your walking holiday is coming to an end and it is time to find your way home.
