Walking in Berchtesgaden and the Bavarian alps

Through Berchtesgaden National Park, surrounded by beautiful mountains

8 Days / 7 Nights
Moderate to Challenging

The blue-green waters of Lake Königssee idyllically mirror the surrounding scenery, nestled among impressive mountains. This tour begins and ends in the German town of Schönau am Königssee / Berchtesgaden, but most of the route takes you across the Austrian side of the Bavarian and Salzburg Alps. Here, majestic peaks and beautiful valleys are connected by fantastic walking trails.

Walk through Berchtesgaden National Park – the only German national park in the Alps. Passing blooming alpine meadows and picturesque villages, you’ll reach the impressive Hochkönig massif. The glaciers of Hohe Tauern National Park create a breathtaking backdrop, while cosy alpine huts serving delicious food offer a glimpse into the region’s unique mountain lifestyle.

Dog on the tour
On this walking holiday, it is possible to bring your dog(s). If you plan to bring a dog, please note this in the message field when booking your trip. Please be aware that some accommodations may charge a small fee for dogs, usually around €10–20 – if any fee at all.

Highlights of the tour

  • Königssee – the emerald-green Alpine lake
  • Berchtesgaden National Park
  • Panoramic view from Jenner and a cable car ride down
  • Mandlwand – the striking rock wall towering above Arthurhaus
  • Stunning views of the Hochkönig massif

The route

Beautiful and well-marked walking trails, with only a few longer ascents requiring a good basic level of fitness and some sure-footedness.
If you love alpine meadows, fantastic views, and the feeling of being high up in the mountains, you will absolutely enjoy this tour.

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

You arrive at your first hotel, located either in Schönau am Königssee or in the town of Berchtesgaden.

Hotel (example): Pension Brandtnerhof

After breakfast, a transfer takes you to the starting point of today’s walk. The trail begins in the forest and leads you to the idyllic Hintersee Lake. You’ll enjoy a pleasant walk into the heart of the national park, surrounded by steep rock walls rising on both sides. You then cross the border into Austria and follow the trail along the rushing waterfalls of the Seisenberg Gorge until you reach your destination in the Weißbach area.

Hotel (example): Hotel-Restaurant Seisenbergklamm

A short transfer takes you to Maria Alm, where today’s walk begins. Here starts the ascent into the Pinzgauer Grass Mountains – an area known for its gentle, rolling Alpine peaks and lush meadows. You’ll walk through a landscape where the trail winds over green hillsides, past flower-filled meadows and small, charming mountain huts. Along the way, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of the nearby Hohe Tauern mountains, whose majestic peaks form a dramatic backdrop.

The entire day feels like a journey through a chain of endless rolling summits, with each new viewpoint rewarding you with even more breathtaking scenery.
Overnight stay in Dienten am Hochkönig.

Hotel (example): Hotel Hochkönig

Today offers one of the most beautiful walks through alpine meadows. Beneath the steep, needle-shaped towers of the Mandlwand, you follow the trail along the foot of the Hochkönig massif towards Arthurhaus. Chamois, cows, horses, countless mountain huts, and impressive landscapes all add to the charm of this walk.
Overnight stay, if possible, at Arthurhaus near the Mandlwand. Alternatively, you stay in the nearby village of Mühlbach.

Hotel (example): Berghotel Arthurhaus

Enjoy the freedom – take a short walk to the surrounding huts, or hop on the bus to the nearby village of Mühlbach. If you’re staying in Mühlbach, you can take the bus up to Arthurhaus and explore the area.

In the morning, you walk up to the green, flower-filled alpine meadows of the Hochkönig region. The impressive Hochkönig massif opens up before you once again, offering magnificent panoramic views of the dramatic Alps and the rolling valleys below. Along the way, you follow the old miners’ trail, which winds through the hilly landscape and safely leads you down to the Salzach Valley.

Here you can enjoy the peace and quiet along the river and the surrounding forests before continuing to the town of Werfen. Nestled at the foot of the mighty Hohenwerfen Fortress, the town is an impressive sight with its towering walls and steep, forested slopes — definitely worth a visit.

Hotel (example): Hotel Pension Golling

To round off the week, another highlight awaits: a long ascent to the Torrener Joch mountain pass (approx. 1,700 m) and onwards to the summit of Jenner in Berchtesgaden, which rises 1,874 m above sea level. You’ll be driven into the beautiful Bluntautal Valley, surrounded by steep rock walls that give the valley a dramatic and majestic feel. You then walk up through lush forests and scattered alpine meadows, where you may spot blooming vegetation — and perhaps some local wildlife such as chamois or marmots.

At the top of Jenner, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view over the surrounding mountains and the emerald-green Königssee far below. From here, you can truly take in the trails and valleys you’ve explored throughout the week. The descent back to the valley is made comfortably by cable car, giving you time to enjoy the panorama one last time.

Hotel (example): Pension Brandtnerhof

After breakfast, it’s time for your journey home.

- Tip -
While you’re in Berchtesgaden, we highly recommend visiting Kehlsteinhaus also known as the Eagle’s Nest, as part of your walking holiday.
Your tour ends in Berchtesgaden National Park, either at your hotel in Schönau am Königssee or in Berchtesgaden itself. From Schönau to Berchtesgaden, there’s a short 7-minute bus ride. From Berchtesgaden, another bus takes you to Dokumentation Obersalzberg – a 15-minute trip. It’s at Obersalzberg where you purchase tickets for the ride up to Kehlsteinhaus.

This impressive building on top of Kehlstein Mountain (1,834 m) was originally constructed as a diplomatic guesthouse for Hitler. He only visited a few times, and due to its extreme location, construction costs were astronomical. Today, the house stands as a well-preserved historical landmark — a reminder of another time.

Inside, you’ll find the famous stone fireplace seen in many photographs, along with a few historical exhibits from the Nazi era. The rest of the building has been converted into a modern German café. The view from the top is absolutely spectacular and best enjoyed outdoors. The journey up is made with special Kehlsteinhaus buses, which drop you off at the historic brass-lined elevator that takes you the final stretch to the top.

Book an extra night after your tour and spend the day visiting The Eagles Nest.
Dokumentation Obersalzberg is a museum focused on Hitler’s time in power, making it an excellent and insightful day trip for those interested.

Buses from Schönau and Berchtesgaden to Dokumentation Obersalzberg can be found here

On this journey there is a discount for children and people sharing a room with "two fully paying adults". The amount of discount depends on age; thus:

Children under 5.99 years: free
Children between 6 and 11.99 years: 50% discount
Children between 12 - 14.99 years: 25% discount
People from 15 years and up: 10% discount

Example 1
You are 2 adults and 1 child. Here it's very simple because you're staying in the same room. The child gets a discount compared to the prices above.

Example 2
You are 2 adults and 2 children (aged 5 and 13). Here you have two options. If you want to stay in two double rooms, it will be full price for all participants. If you want to stay in the same room (e.g. a family room), then both children will get a discount (free and 25% discount respectively).

Example 3
You are 2 adults and 3 children (age: 7, 13 and 15). In this case, you will probably need two double rooms where the youngest child sleeps with the parents. Therefore, there will only be a discount for the youngest child aged 7, who will receive a 50% discount.

Example 4
You are 3 adults who want to sleep in the same double room. The extra adult will receive a 10% discount.

Please note
It is important that you understand that it is your own responsibility when you choose to bring children on the tours. You should check the descriptions of the difficulty levels and decide whether the specific tour is suitable for your child.

We recommend taking out travel insurance that covers at least illness, accident, repatriation, lost holiday, luggage and liability. As a customer, you are responsible for taking out the necessary travel insurance to cover these costs.

Before taking out insurance, you should check whether you are already covered by travel or cancellation insurance through your home insurance company, credit card or similar - please note that there may be differences in insurance coverage.

After booking this trip, you get access to various discount schemes.

The climate in Bavaria is part of the continental climate zone with distince seasons. Ideal time for hiking holidays is hence in spring, summer and autumn.

Due to the location in the alpine foothills you can expect rainfall in summer. We recommend you always carry rain protection with you.
