The route
This is a mountain walking holiday with some substantial days, including walks of up to approximately 7 hours. The routes mainly follow well-maintained mountain paths, hiking trails and forest roads through alpine pastures and mountainous terrain. A good level of fitness is required, particularly for the longer stages and days with significant ascent and descent. You should also be sure-footed, as a few sections require greater care on uneven mountain terrain. On some days, easier alternatives are available. Overall, this holiday is particularly suitable if you already enjoy mountain walking and are comfortable with longer days in hilly and alpine terrain.

Itinerary
Arrive in Maishofen or the surrounding area and settle into your hotel. If you arrive early, nearby Zell am See is well worth a visit. You can take a stroll through the town centre, relax beside Lake Zell or, on a warm summer day, enjoy a refreshing swim in the lake.
Hotel (example): Schloss Kammer
Your first walking day takes you straight into the beautiful Pinzgau mountains. From Maishofen, you climb via Kammereggalm towards Schwalbenwand, a distinctive double summit surrounded by the rolling grassy mountains for which this part of the region is known.
The effort is rewarded with wide-ranging views across an impressive collection of Alpine peaks. You continue through woodland along the Hofer Plattl trail towards Hinterreit, where there is time for a break before carrying on past the peaceful Friedenskapelle. The final section leads down towards Maria Alm, an attractive village surrounded by mountains and known for its pilgrimage church and traditional rural character.

Leaving Maria Alm, you initially follow paths across open meadows before joining old pilgrimage trails. The landscape gradually becomes more rugged as you approach the impressive limestone mountains of the Steinerne Meer.
A series of panoramic paths takes you towards Steinalm, a beautifully situated alpine pasture beneath the mountains. From here, the route descends on a steeper trail towards the remarkable hermitage above Saalfelden. Continue past Lichtenberg Castle before reaching the historic town of Saalfelden.
Hotel (example): Hindenburg
Today's walk takes you from Salzburgerland across the mountains and into Tyrol. Starting near the Vorderkaser Gorge in Weißbach, you follow streams and varied mountain paths towards the remote Hochkaser alpine pasture. The route crosses an isolated mountain pass between the dramatic peaks of the Leogang and Lofer mountains, creating a wonderful contrast between rugged limestone scenery and green alpine pastures.
You continue via Niederkaseralm and through the Griesel valley, following a wild and scenic river landscape towards the Pillerseetal. The Lofer mountains provide an impressive backdrop as you make your way into this peaceful Tyrolean valley.
Hotel (example): Alte Post
Forest trails and green mountain meadows lead you upwards towards the alpine pastures surrounding the imposing Spielberg massif. The route passes Lindlingalm before continuing across the mountains via Spielbergtörl. There are opportunities along the way to experience the atmosphere of traditional alpine huts and sample regional specialities.
From Spielberghaus, you follow a scenic forest route down towards Saalbach-Hinterglemm. Depending on your energy levels and the conditions, there are also possibilities for additional mountain ascents in the area.
Hotel (example): Reiterkogel
Today offers a gentler change of pace after the previous mountain stages. You can spend time enjoying Saalbach-Hinterglemm and the benefits included with your Joker Card, or set out on the suggested circular walk through the alpine pastures at the head of the valley.
The route passes Forsthofalm and Saalalm before continuing towards Lindlingalm. Here, a suspension bridge provides access to the Baumzipfelweg treetop trail. Along the way, you can enjoy views across the Glemmtal valley and experience the relaxed atmosphere of the area's mountain pastures.
Hotel (example): Reiterkogel
The final walking day provides a fitting conclusion to the holiday with one of the most impressive panoramic routes of the week. After ascending into the mountains, you follow a high-level trail at around 2,000 metres towards Schmittenhöhe. The elevated position provides extensive views across the surrounding Alps, and on a clear day you can see more than 30 summits rising above 3,000 metres.
The panorama encompasses some of Austria's best-known mountain scenery, including the Hohe Tauern and the glacier-covered peaks around Kitzsteinhorn. At the end of the high route, you descend by cable car to Zell am See before continuing by bus to Maishofen.

On this tour you will be on your own supplied with maps, route descriptions and luggage transfers. That means that your time is your own and you have plenty of time to enjoy the stages in your own pace.

The booking process
When you book the trip, we will begin booking hotels and arranging all the practical aspects of your tour. This process typically takes 5–8 working days, but in some cases it may take longer for certain bookings. If you arrange your own transportation, we recommend waiting until we have confirmed your booking before making any arrangements.
Dates
If you can select a date in the trip calendar (in the booking form), then this is a possible start date. We regularly update our trips with sold-out dates; these dates will then appear in red/grey and cannot be selected.
Flights to Salzburg are not included in the price of the holiday. We recommend arranging your own flights, for example via Momondo.
We recommend waiting until your holiday has been confirmed before booking your transportation.

If you would like us to arrange your flights, you can request a quote for the holiday including flights. It usually takes around two days to receive a quote. Please note that we charge a handling fee of DKK 350 per ticket, so it will normally be cheaper to book your flights directly.
From Salzburg to Maishofen
From Salzburg Airport, you can travel by public transport to Maishofen. The journey takes approximately 2 hours. Alternatively, you can fly to Innsbruck or Munich, from where the journey to Maishofen by public transport takes approximately 3 hours.
If you travel by car
This holiday is particularly suitable for travelling by car, as the tour starts and finishes in Maishofen. A limited number of free parking spaces are available at the hotel. Paid parking or garage parking is also available for approximately EUR 15 per day.
If you travel by train
It is also possible to travel to Maishofen by train. Maishofen has its own railway station, allowing you to travel by public transport close to the starting point of the tour.
Please note that journey times, connections and timetables may vary depending on your travel date and the season.
You will stay at a 4-star hotel in Ramsau and at 3-star hotels and inns in the other towns, except on day 2, when accommodation is in a dormitory at a mountain hut.
Please note that luggage transport to the mountain hut on day 2 is not possible, so you will need to carry the necessary equipment for the overnight stay yourself. It is also required to bring your own sleeping bag or sleeping sheet for this night. The sleeping bag can be transported with the luggage transfer on the other days when it is not needed.
Breakfast is included every day.
Lunch is not included. Any places to eat along the route will be shown in the Bering Travel app. Please note that the app does not indicate whether these places are open when you pass them. We therefore recommend checking current opening hours before setting out on the day's walk and bringing food with you if there are no suitable options along the way. You can also ask your hotel if they can prepare a packed lunch for an additional fee.
It is possible to add half board with 7 dinners to this holiday. If you would like half board, you can select it on the booking form.
If you do not choose half board, the choice of restaurants varies between the overnight locations. Larger holiday resorts such as Maria Alm, Saalfelden, Fieberbrunn and particularly Saalbach-Hinterglemm offer a good selection of restaurants and places to eat. In the smaller locations, the choice is more limited. We recommend checking opening hours and, where appropriate, booking a table in advance, particularly in the smaller villages.
Luggage transfer is included on this tour. Upon arrival at the first hotel you will be given luggage tags along with the rest of the welcome package. You fill out the luggage tags and put them on your bags where they will remain for the duration of the tour.
Your luggage is picked up from the hotel lobby around 9am every morning and will arrive at your next hotel at 6pm at the latest (often long before that). If there are any special exceptions to the luggage transfer you will be notified upon arrival.
Luggage transfer includes one bag per guest and the bags can weigh 20kg each.

Immediately after booking this trip, you'll recieve a pre-booking-email where you can get a complete overview of your booking. Once the tour is confirmed you get a confirmation email from us along with practical information about the tour.
One month before departure
You will receive a hotel list and final travel documents.
Upon arrival at the first hotel
You'll receive the welcome pack, which contains everything you need for the trip. There will be route descriptions, maps, luggage tags and specific local vouchers. The documents are in English.
Notice: On some tours it is necessary to either print the documents yourself or to bring them electronically.
Hiking in mountainous terrain such as the Dolomites and the Alps requires good preparation and respect for nature.
- Be in basic good physical shape before the trip
- Wear proper hiking shoes or boots
- Bring plenty of water and some food or snacks for the hike
- Dress appropriately for the conditions
- Use the provided map or GPS information (for example via the Bering Travel app) and stay on marked trails
- Bring a fully charged phone and a power bank
- Always check the weather forecast and the route before setting out as conditions can change quickly and your own safety should always come before reaching impressive viewpoints
We recommend taking out travel insurance that covers at least illness, accident, repatriation, lost holiday, luggage and liability. As a customer, you are responsible for taking out the necessary travel insurance to cover these costs.
Before taking out insurance, you should check whether you are already covered by travel or cancellation insurance through your home insurance company, credit card or similar - please note that there may be differences in insurance coverage.
When you book a trip with us, we plant a tree in Kenya.
Bering Travel partners with Growing Trees Network, which has been planting trees in Kenya since 2020 in collaboration with Seniorer uden Grænser (Seniors Without Borders). The trees are planted with small-scale local farmers in the Mount Kenya region, as well as at schools, where the fruit helps supplement students’ diets and is incorporated into their learning.
The trees are planted using the shamba method – a sustainable approach that combines reforestation with agricultural crops. This keeps the soil covered with vegetation throughout the year, helping to prevent nutrient loss and reduce erosion.
The contribution to tree planting comes directly from Bering Travel’s own earnings and is not added to the price of your trip.
This initiative is not intended as a carbon offset for travel, but as a way to make a positive contribution.
During the hiking season, temperatures in the Salzburgerland and Kitzbühel Alps are generally pleasant, but weather conditions in the Alps can change quickly. Days in the valleys can be warm and sunny, while temperatures are often noticeably cooler on the higher-altitude trails. Several sections of this holiday take you high into the mountains, and on the final walking day the route reaches elevations of around 2,000 metres.
We therefore recommend dressing in layers so that you can easily adjust your clothing as temperatures change throughout the day. Bring a warm jumper or fleece as well as a good windproof and waterproof jacket. Lightweight, breathable walking clothes are ideal on warm summer days, while sunscreen, sunglasses and a sun hat are also useful in the mountains.
Rain showers and thunderstorms can occur in the Alps, particularly on warm summer days. We therefore recommend checking the local weather forecast before setting out each day and keeping an eye on changing conditions while walking.
