Cycling holiday from Lake Constance to Lago Maggiore

8 Days / 7 Nights
Challenging

Embark on an adventurous cycling holiday that takes you on an adventurous journey south over the Gotthard Pass, a route almost forgotten today as the ancient trade route across the Lukmanier. Experience the familiar Swiss precision and tranquillity as you start your cycling adventure on the picturesque shores of Lake Constance, slowly leading you towards the beautiful Austrian border.

As you pedal, you'll experience the breathtaking scenery that surrounds you as you follow the Rhine Route through lush vineyards and pass the majestic Rhine Gorge, showing you the way to the Romance-speaking part of Switzerland. Here you'll discover the rich culture and history of the region as you sit down for a short break at the impressive monastery in Disentis. This much-needed rest will give you the energy you need to continue your journey into the spectacular and rocky terrain that surrounds the Lukmanier Pass, the gateway to the charming south of Switzerland.

The route

The route is flat and easy on Lake Constance and in the Rhine Valley. From Chur begins a steady climb. Uneven roads in the Rhine gorge. The most challenging part is the stage over the Lukmanier Pass - which can be shortened by public transport. Some traffic around Bellinzona, but otherwise quiet side roads in Ticino.

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

You'll arrive at your first hotel in Kreuzlingen on Lake Constance, where you'll spend the night and recharge for tomorrow's cycling tour.

Follow the railway line past the lively lakeside town of Romanshorn to Arbon. A charming old town and a large castle are among the landmarks of this small town on Lake Constance. Continue along the lakeshore to today's accommodation in the Rorschach area.

The St. Galler Rheintal is an area that is often surrounded by the warm wind called ‘Föhn’. Much land has been gained by the correction of the Alpenrhein waters in the Rhine Valley. You'll spend the night in Buchs - an important border station and the gateway to the Principality of Liechtenstein.

‘Bündner Herrschaft’, the fertile garden and vineyard of Graubünden, sits on a mound of shale debris. This is also where Heidi, Peter and Alpöhi from the world-famous children's fairy tale live. Chur is the oldest town north of the Alps and has many restaurants.

The Rhine Gorge - Switzerland's Grand Canyon is an impressive first part of this tour. Afterwards, you'll reach the ‘Surselva’, Grisons' largest Romansh-speaking region. Today's tour also takes you to the monastery in Disentis.

Through the ‘Höllenschlucht’ gorge and Val Medel up to the rugged pass at Lukmanier, the border between the cantons of Ticino and Graubünden. In the sunny Valle di Blenio, the route descends through centuries-old cultural landscapes, fragrant flower-filled meadows and terrace walls towards Biasca.

The castles and city walls of Bellinzona beckon from afar as you drive towards the Magadino plain with its small villages. You'll pass the Ticino Delta and roll along a lovely promenade towards Lake Maggiore.

The journey is over and it's time to head home or out into the world.
