The route

You’ll mainly cycle on well-maintained bike paths and quiet country roads, with only a few short stretches on slightly busier routes. The surface is mostly asphalt, with a few easy gravel sections. The route gradually climbs towards Tarvis before descending towards the coast. Along the Adriatic Sea, the terrain is mostly flat with a few gentle hills. An ideal cycling holiday for those who love beautiful routes without too many challenges.

At the end of the Canal Valley, the historic town of Gemona del Friuli awaits, where the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta dominates the skyline. After a lovely morning in Udine, you’ll cycle south along the ancient Roman road Via Claudia Augusta. The route takes you across the flat Friulian plain with its small, charming villages. Stop in the star-shaped fortress town of Palmanova and enjoy an ice cream on Piazza Grande before continuing towards the coast. In Cervignano, you leave the Alpe-Adria route and cycle towards the charming fishing village of Marano Lagunare.

Feel the warm Scirocco wind as you cycle towards the lagoon and the Adriatic Sea. You can choose to shorten the stage with a small ferry ride between Marano Lagunare and Lignano (at your own expense). Today’s stage follows the beautiful Adriatic coast towards the legendary lagoon city of Venice. At Jesolo, you’ll follow the Sile River for a while before it flows into the sea.
