The Route

You’ll mainly cycle on well-developed bike paths and quiet country roads, with only a few short sections along busier routes. The terrain is mostly asphalted, with some shorter stretches on well-maintained gravel paths. The route is gently rolling to hilly, with a few longer climbs along the way. On three days, there are also optional, more challenging routes that take you over impressive mountain passes – perfect for those looking for an extra adventure.

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

Bled is the sparkling jewel on the edge of Triglav National Park. Explore this charming lakeside town, where a medieval castle crowns the cliff above a shimmering glacial lake and a tiny island sits gracefully at its center – Slovenia’s most iconic postcard view and the perfect place to begin your adventure.

Lake Bled, often called the jewel of the Julian Alps, is the sparkling starting point of your cycling adventure. Following the crystal-clear Sava Bohinjka River, the route leads you through green valleys and picturesque mountain villages to Bohinjska Bistrica and onward to Lake Bohinj – a serene alpine gem straight out of a postcard.

For those seeking an extra challenge, you can cycle up to the Pokljuka Plateau in the heart of Triglav National Park and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views before descending towards the lake.

Hotel (example): Alpinhotel Jezero

From the picturesque Lake Bohinj, the route takes you through a peaceful valley back to Bohinjska Bistrica. From here, a scenic train ride carries you through Slovenia’s longest tunnel to the neighbouring valley, where a long, winding descent leads you to the emerald-green Soča River. From there, you’ll follow the river upstream towards Tolmin.

For a more adventurous option, take the mountain road across the Soriška Planina Plateau – the effort is rewarded with spectacular panoramic views and an exhilarating downhill ride into the Soča Valley.

Hotel (example): Hotel Dvorec

Cycle through a valley framed by towering mountains and accompanied by the emerald-green waters of the Soča River. Near Kobarid, cross a dramatic gorge on a narrow bridge – an irresistible photo stop – before continuing towards the Italian border. Following the Natisone River, you’ll reach the beautiful medieval town of Cividale del Friuli.

For those seeking a bit more adventure, an alternative route over the mountain pass rewards you with a stunning high-altitude ride and breathtaking views.

Hotel (example): Altùris

Today’s ride is all about indulgence and enjoyment. In the Slovenian-Italian border region, you’ll cycle through the enchanting, rolling vineyards of Collio. The landscape stretches endlessly with rows of vines, dotted with welcoming wineries offering tastings – the perfect prelude to an evening filled with Italian culinary delights.

Hotel (example): Altùris

From Cividale del Friuli, follow the vineyards into a quiet valley towards the Slovenian border. A winding serpentine road takes you over a mountain ridge and down into the beautiful Soča Valley, reaching Kanal ob Soči. Here, the river shimmers in mesmerizing shades of blue and green, accompanying you all the way to the impressive Solkan Bridge.

Your day ends in Gorizia – a vibrant cultural city where Italian flair meets Central European elegance.

Hotel (example): Grand Hotel Entourage

After just a few pedal strokes, you’ll cross the border into Slovenia and cycle through scenic vineyards before the route leads you up onto a karst plateau. From here, sweeping views open up over the deep-blue Adriatic Sea and the Bay of Trieste. Passing through idyllic villages, you’ll roll back into Italy, where the lively port city of Trieste awaits – full of Mediterranean charm and an unmistakable zest for life.

Hotel (example): Victoria Hotel Letterario

After breakfast, it’s time to check out and begin your individual journey home – or extend your stay to enjoy a little more of Slovenia and Italy.
