Cycling holiday in Basque Country

7 Days / 6 Nights
Moderate

You're sure to fall in love with the temperament, charm, warmth, colours and contrasts in the bottom left corner of the hexagon.

From the seaside resort of Biarritz, known as an Eldorado for surfers, excellent golf courses and lively nightlife, the cycle routes first take you south along the coastline with steep cliffs and long sandy beaches with panoramic views across the Atlantic and into Spain.

The cycle route takes you further inland on the French side through green and wild mountain landscapes.
Picturesque villages with prominent cultural heritage and rich traditions will share your attention with beautiful and expansive views from hills and ridges. You'll pass villages like Sare, Ainhoa and Saint Jean Pied-de-Port, known as one of the resting places on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, before turning your nose towards the sea with Biarritz as your destination and final overnight stop.

The route

The tour is moderately demanding, but be prepared for some tough climbs on the middle three days (one day can be covered by train if desired). Sample the local cuisine, preferably with espelette pepper (on the route), which is a favourite of the district's chefs. Each evening you will be warmly welcomed by your hosts in small hotels or charming guesthouses (chambres d'hôtes).

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

You'll arrive in Biarritz and check in at the centrally located hotel. The hotel staff will provide the equipment for the tour, while the bikes will be delivered by the bike hire company the next morning. Biarritz is known for its seawater therapy, so perhaps a treatment to relax your shoulders on the first day of your holiday? We suggest a stroll around the town or perhaps a swim in the sea before dinner.

Hotel (example): Geirges VI

Your Basque journey of discovery starts along the coast southwards from Biarritz. You'll familiarise yourself with the coastal road along the sea with rocky outcrops, long sandy beaches and small valleys. Farmland and mountainous landscapes form the backdrop inland.

You'll pass typical villages and towns such as Saint-Jean-de-Luz in the long, wide bay with its beautiful coastal path and the famous church of Saint Jean Baptiste. A ferry will take you and your bike from Hendaye on the French side of the border to Hondarribia in Spain, a fortified fishing village with a rich history, colourful facades and lots of flower boxes.

Hotel (example): Hotel Jauregui

The ferry will take you back to Hendaye where you will embark on the first part of your day trip to Ascain. Here you can admire the Roman bridge and cultural treasures. After another four kilometres, if you wish, you can take the small railway ‘Rhune’ up to the highest point in the Basque Country.

Enjoy a stroll through the picturesque streets of Sare before the final cycle ride to the medieval village of Ainhoa with its half-timbered houses, washing place, fountain, dovecote and surrounding pastures with black sheep.

Hotel (example): Hotel Argi Eder

After climbing the Col de Pinodiéta, you'll cycle through the village of Espelette, which was famous for its trade in small wild horses called Pottocks and for the chilli named after the village.

Following the hillsides along the River Nive, the road winds its way to Saint Jean Pied-de-Port, world famous as one of the resting places on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela and a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its distinctive Saint Jacques Gate.

Hotel (example): Gure Lana

Today's stage from Saint Jean Pied de Port to Itxassou or Cambo-les-Bains has something for everyone: take on the challenge and ride today's stage in the heart of nature with steep climbs, or if you're a little tired after the previous day, take today's stage by train (one morning departure and one early afternoon departure).

Hotel (example): Hotel du Fronton

Now you'll once again turn towards the sea and today's destination is Biarritz. After travelling the first 15 kilometres, you'll enter the cycle path and stay on it all the way to Bayonne.

Enjoy a break in the city, famous for its gastronomic cuisine and local festivals. Turn towards the sea and ride along the Anglet coastline back to Biarritz.

Spend the night in the same hotel as at the start of the tour. You've come full circle and your memoir has many new and exciting pages.
