Cycling holiday from Salzburg to Vienna

8 Days / 7 Nights
Easy

Enchanting as Mozart's arias and uplifting as the sound of the Viennese Waltz, this cycling tour combines the best aspects of Austria's most famous cultural cities: from Mozart's birthplace in Salzburg all the way to Vienna, the city of the Viennese Waltz.

Every day there are stunning landscapes and countless cultural highlights in store: Oberndorf, home of the ‘Silent Night’ song, the impressive castle of Burghausen, the baroque town of Schärding. The Danube River winds its way elegantly through the Schlögener Schlinge, the Weinviertel (Austria's wine region) offers culinary delights.

The final leg of the journey takes you through the Wachau region and from Krems to Vienna by train, which almost feels like a waltz in itself.

Highlights of the journey

Concentrated culture and historic old towns line the stages from Mozartplatz in Salzburg to the Prater in Vienna. Take a peek inside the famous ‘Silent Night’ chapel in Oberndorf and stroll through the Baroque town of Grein.

The route

Quiet paved cycle paths and small country lanes along the river beds of the Salzach, Inn and Danube. There are only a few short stretches of unpaved cycle paths. The best example of a perfect cycle path runs downstream along the Danube River and is called ‘Donauradweg’.

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

Arrive in Mozart's city, filled with cultural treasures. Take a relaxing stroll through the Old Town and visit Mozart's birthplace, the cathedral, Mirabell Palace, the castle and Hohensalzburg Fortress.

You'll cycle from Salzburg towards Oberndorf where you'll see where the original ‘Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas’ was written in the ‘Silent Night’ chapel. You'll then cycle through vast forests to Tittmoning. From here, the ‘Unterer Inn’ nature trail leads to Burghausen. The stunning old town and the largest castle area in Central Europe are the most prominent features of this very memorable city.

After the Gothic town of Braunau and numerous bird colonies, the trail leads to Obernberg. Take a closer look and visit the monastery in Reichersberg. The small towns along the Inn River appear like a string of pearls, one of which is undoubtedly the baroque town of Schärding with its famous colourful row of houses in the main square called ‘Silberzeile’.

Along the Inn into the city of Passau, where 3 rivers meet. We highly recommend a tour of the city including a visit to the dome (the world's largest church organ). Along the Danube via Obernzell and Engelhartszell (the only Austrian Trappist monastery) and then through the Donauleiten nature reserve until you reach the ‘Schlögener Schlinge’. Ferry transfer to the hotel (organised by yourself).

The well-known ‘Donauschlinge’ is one of many highlights of this cycle tour. Aschach, Ottensheim and Wilhering, three small towns along the Danube, pave the way for the magnificent arrival in Linz, the county capital. In the old historic centre, countless cafés and inns invite you to take a well-deserved break. Finally, cycle to Enns, the oldest town in Austria (square with tower, museum Lauriacum).

Category A + B - Hotel (example): Zum goldenen Schiff

Follow the Danube to the beautiful little baroque town of Grein (theatre, maritime museum, Grein Castle). Via the scenic Strudengau region into Austria's wine region to Marbach or Maria Taferl, home to a pilgrimage church perched impressively high above the Danube.

Category B - Hotel (example): Wachauerhof

After the marvellous Melk Abbey, small romantic towns in the wonderful ‘Wachau’ wine region like Weißenkirchen, Dürnstein and Krems will enchant you. Take the train to Austria's capital, Vienna, with its countless sights and interesting places to see.
