The Portuguese Camino ➤ Baiona to Santiago - Easy version

Discover the magic of the Camino at a gentle pace

12 Days / 11 Nights
Moderate
Camino de Santiago

This tour is for those who dream of walking the Camino, but prefer shorter daily stages and more time to explore, relax, and soak up the atmosphere.

On this “easy” version of the Camino Portugués, you will walk 7–18 km per day over 12 days/11 nights – a comfortable pace where even the longer days never feel overwhelming.

In this version of the tour, the focus is on comfort, flexibility, and rich experiences. We take care of the luggage transfers between hotels and provide easy navigation through our app – so you can focus on what truly matters: experiencing, feeling, and enjoying.

The Portuguese Camino – a route full of history
The Camino Portugués is one of the classic pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela, and the second most popular after the French Way. For centuries, pilgrims from Portugal and across the world have followed these paths to reach the tomb of the Apostle James in Santiago. Already in the Middle Ages, this route was considered significant, and you will feel the presence of history in everything from small chapels to the old quarters of the towns you pass through.

Especially on this section – from the coastal town of Baiona in Galicia up to Santiago – you will experience the combined influence of the sea and the land on the pilgrim tradition. The paths are ancient, the villages vibrant, and the locals accustomed to greeting travellers with a warm “buen camino.”

From Baiona to Santiago – along the coast and through green landscapes
Your journey begins in the beautiful Galician coastal town of Baiona, where the Atlantic waves crash against the town walls and promenade. Baiona is renowned for its maritime history – it was here in 1493 that the first copy of Columbus’ report on the discovery of America arrived, and today you can still visit the replica of the caravel Pinta as a museum ship.

From here, you follow the Camino’s coastal variant into the green, rolling hills of Galicia. The path takes you through small fishing villages, fertile vineyards, and gently undulating countryside with groves of eucalyptus and chestnut trees. Along the way, you’ll enjoy both sweeping Atlantic views and quiet trails bordered by old stone walls.

Your walk leads you through charming towns such as Vigo, Redondela, Pontevedra, and Caldas de Reis. Pontevedra is famous for its beautiful, car-free old town, granite architecture, and lively tapas bars, while Caldas de Reis offers hot springs and a slower pace as you draw closer to your goal.

The final day’s walk into Santiago de Compostela is always something special. No matter how many kilometres you have walked, standing before the cathedral – and sharing the moment with fellow pilgrims – is an unforgettable reward.

More time, more experiences
With shorter daily stages, this tour gives you a rare luxury on the Camino: time. Time to enjoy a coffee in the sun at a small bar, time to talk with fellow pilgrims or locals, time to visit churches and museums – or simply to rest your legs.

This easy version is designed for those who wish to experience the Camino without rush or stress, but with comfort, safety, and complete freedom. This is the Camino as it should be – beautiful, historic, and heartwarming – at a pace and in a form that everyone can enjoy. We look forward to sending you off on this unforgettable adventure.

About the route

The Caminho da Costa, as the route is called, is a wonderful alternative to the traditional Portuguese Camino. The journey from Baiona to Santiago is approximately 125 km, and the ascents are not particularly demanding. You will walk along paths, small country roads, beaches, and through charming villages.

On average, you will cover 7–18 km per day. With the longest stage being 18 km and the shortest only 7 km, there will naturally be some days that feel more challenging than others.

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

You arrive in Baiona, where you check in at the first hotel of the tour. Today is a day to prepare and get ready for the walk, which begins tomorrow.

Hotel (example): coming soon

Today’s walk begins as you leave Baiona and its suburbs behind, entering more rural surroundings where the landscape opens into fields, small farms, and peaceful country paths. It is a beautiful contrast to the lively harbour area and tapas bars of the town.

One of today’s highlights is crossing an ancient stone bridge surrounded by a fascinating local legend – the perfect place to pause, take a photo, and imagine the many pilgrims who have crossed here before you. The bridge leads you into A Ramallosa, a small town with a distinctly historic atmosphere.

The final kilometres of the stage wind through a fragrant eucalyptus forest, where tall trees provide shade and a serene sense of calm. The trail ends at the busier main road near Corujo, where today’s walk concludes.

From here, we arrange transport to take you back to your hotel in Baiona for the night. This way, you can enjoy your evening in the charming coastal town without worrying about logistics – fully ready for the next stage of your Camino.

Today’s stage begins comfortably with a transfer from Baiona back to the point where you finished yesterday’s walk.

Leaving the main road behind, you continue through small villages and rural landscapes, experiencing authentic Galician life with stone houses, little fields, and friendly locals who warmly welcome pilgrims.

Soon, you approach the outskirts of Vigo – but before entering the big city, a delightful green oasis awaits: Parque de Castrelos. Here, the Camino follows paths through leafy parkland filled with ancient trees, manicured gardens, and trickling streams. It is a welcome pause from urban life, giving you the chance to enjoy nature and regain energy.

Finally, the route leads directly to your hotel in Vigo, where you can relax after today’s walk. Here, you also have the opportunity to explore Galicia’s largest city – with its lively restaurants, shops, and vibrant maritime atmosphere.

Today’s stage begins with a chance to experience more of Vigo, Galicia’s largest city. You walk along the lively main shopping street, surrounded by shops, cafés, and the buzz of city life, before the route takes you through quieter residential neighbourhoods, where you can sense the everyday rhythm of this coastal city.

As you leave the metropolis behind, the character of the Camino changes completely. You follow a quiet backroad, sometimes unpaved, winding its way through hillside villages surrounded by green meadows and traditional stone houses. Along the way, you are rewarded with spectacular views over the Vigo estuary, where the characteristic floating mussel farms can be seen – a beautiful example of Galicia’s maritime heritage.

A pleasant woodland stretch offers shade and peaceful walking among eucalyptus and oak trees. Finally, a steep descent through lush countryside brings you down into Redondela, a charming Galician town known for its striking viaducts, lively squares, and welcoming cafés – the perfect place to rest your feet after a rewarding day on the Camino.

Hotel (example): coming soon

From today, you will follow the classic Central Camino all the way to Santiago – a wonderful feeling of being “on the trail” of countless pilgrims before you.

Today’s stage is short and pleasant, perfect for taking things at an easy pace. You leave Redondela, a town full of life and history, and follow paths leading you up through a forested hillside. Surrounded by eucalyptus and oak trees, you can enjoy birdsong and the cool shade of the tall woodland.

After this gentle climb, the route descends into the beautiful riverside town of Arcade, situated on the shores of the Vigo estuary. Here, you’ll have plenty of time to explore at your own rhythm: take a stroll along the waterfront, admire the views of the bridges and the river – or treat yourself to the town’s famous fresh oysters at a local restaurant.

A perfect day to relax, breathe the fresh air, and savour the joys of the Camino at a slower pace.

Hotel (example): coming soon

Today’s walk begins with a touch of history: you leave Arcade by crossing an ancient stone bridge of great historical importance, one that has carried countless pilgrims over the centuries. As you step across, you can almost hear the echo of medieval footsteps while the river sparkles beneath you.

From there, a gentle ascent takes you along old cobblestone paths that wind their way through rolling countryside and woodland. Surrounded by lush meadows, small farms, and the fragrance of eucalyptus, the peaceful atmosphere and birdsong turn the walk into a meditative experience.

A calm descent then leads you to the small Chapel of Santa Marta – a tranquil spot nestled in greenery, perfect for a pause and a moment of reflection.

From here, the route takes a beautiful detour towards Pontevedra. You follow the River Tomeza, where the path runs alongside forested streams and lush vegetation. This enchanting finale to the day’s stage leads you into Pontevedra – a lively and charming town known for its beautiful, car-free historic centre, full of cafés and welcoming squares.

Hotel (example): coming soon

Today’s stage begins in the heart of Pontevedra, as you leave the charming medieval centre by crossing a solid old stone bridge that for centuries has connected the town’s neighbourhoods and guided pilgrims onwards to Santiago. Here you take one last look at the narrow streets and welcoming squares before saying goodbye to the lively atmosphere of the city.

Soon after crossing the railway line, the landscape opens up, and you find yourself in the true Galician countryside. The path leads you through green and peaceful terrain, passing the historic Church of Santa María de Alba – an ideal place to pause and enjoy the quiet, spiritual atmosphere.

From here, the route follows a steady, gentle ascent through open fields and along small country trails surrounded by nature, until you reach the village of San Amaro – a calm and traditional Galician stop on the Camino. Here today’s walk ends, and a transfer will take you back to Pontevedra for the night, allowing you to enjoy another evening in this charming town with its tapas bars and cosy cafés.

Hotel (example): coming soon

Today’s walk begins with a transfer back to San Amaro, where you rejoin the historic Camino trail. From here, the route descends towards the Barosa River, winding through lush green countryside filled with small paths and open fields. Along the way, you will notice the many stone crosses (cruceiros) scattered across the landscape – a classic sign that Santiago de Compostela, the pilgrims’ goal, is drawing nearer.

For a short stretch, the trail follows the Lamas River, meandering alongside the flowing water and through small woodlands, before reaching the entrance to the Río Barosa Natural Park. Here, the scenery is particularly striking, with small waterfalls and old watermills that testify to the area’s history.

The path then continues along quiet country roads and through agricultural land, where you’ll see vineyards, vegetable gardens, and traditional stone houses. The stage ends in the charming spa town of Caldas de Reis, famous for its warm, sulphur-rich thermal springs. Here you can round off the day by soaking your feet in the hot pools – a classic Camino experience and a wonderful reward after today’s walk.

Hotel (example): coming soon

Today’s walk begins as you leave Caldas de Reis by crossing a medieval stone bridge, where you can sense the footsteps of countless pilgrims who have crossed here before you. From there, the path follows the Bermaña River, winding through especially scenic countryside with lush meadows, small woodlands, and gently flowing streams.

After a few crossroads, the route continues with a steady, gentle ascent into the Valga forest. Here you walk among tall trees, birdsong, and the fragrance of the woods – a peaceful part of the Camino that invites calm and reflection. From the higher ground, you’ll be rewarded with fine views of the surrounding landscape before the trail descends towards the village of San Miguel de Valga, a traditional Galician community with stone houses and a village church.

Along the way, it is well worth stopping in Infesta to admire the detailed carvings on the old stone cross (cruceiro) – an important symbol for pilgrims and a beautiful example of local stonemasonry.

Finally, you cross the river at the bridge in Pontecesures, where the scenery changes once again, and follow the River Sar into Padrón. This charming town is steeped in legend and history, known as the place where the Apostle James is said to have arrived by boat in Galicia – one of the most famous sites along the entire Camino. Here you’ll find churches, monuments, and small squares where history feels almost tangible – a very special way to end today’s stage.

Hotel (example): coming soon

Today’s stage offers a journey through the architectural contrasts of history and the beauty of Galician villages. Your first stop is Iria Flavia, where the Romanesque church is a highlight of the Camino. Here you can sense centuries of pilgrimage and deep local history – an atmosphere of peace and spirituality in the midst of the green countryside.

Further along the route, you encounter a very different expression at the Church of Our Lady in A Esclavitude. Rich in baroque details and religious ornamentation, it provides a striking architectural counterpoint to the simpler Romanesque style of Iria Flavia. Here you gain a glimpse into the religious passion and artistic richness that characterise Galicia’s churches.

The path then continues through small villages, where stone houses and flower-decked balconies create a warm and welcoming picture of the Galician landscape.

Today’s walk ends in Parada de Francos, a charming little village known for its beautifully decorated stone cross (cruceiro) and its ancient, imposing oak trees casting shade over the village centre. Steeped in tradition and tranquillity, it is the perfect place to spend the night, relax in the peaceful atmosphere, and gather strength for the final part of your Camino towards Santiago.

Hotel (example): coming soon

The final stage of the Camino begins in the peaceful Galician countryside, where the morning light falls over green fields and small stone houses. You follow trails through a beautiful woodland, where tall trees form a green tunnel and birdsong creates an almost meditative atmosphere. Here you may feel both anticipation and calm – it is your last day as a pilgrim.

After this quiet forest walk, the path begins to climb towards Milladoiro, a traditional point where pilgrims catch their first magical glimpse of Santiago Cathedral’s towers in the distance. For many, it is an emotional moment – proof that the long-awaited goal is truly near.

To reach the city itself, you first descend towards the River Sar, crossing the valley before beginning a final gentle ascent into Santiago de Compostela.

The arrival is truly special: you enter the medieval city centre along the lively Rua Franco, surrounded by old stone houses, restaurants, and the vibrant buzz of life, joining the stream of pilgrims heading towards their destination. And then – suddenly – the square opens before you, and Santiago Cathedral rises in all its splendour. A moment filled with joy, relief, and pride at having completed your Camino.

Hotel (example): coming soon

After breakfast, it is time to check out and begin your journey home. However, we recommend taking some time to stroll around and experience this gem of a city. Small, lively, and historic, Santiago de Compostela’s UNESCO-listed old town has an enchanting atmosphere. Santiago is not only a destination for pilgrims – the streets are also filled with locals and students, giving the city a vibrant and authentic character.

For the accommodations, handpicked family-run hotels and guesthouses have been selected for their character and warm hospitality. The standard is 2-3 star tourist class. The hotels are centrally located in the cities and close to the Pilgrim Route. In rare cases, it may be necessary to book accommodation further from the route, but in these cases, transfers will be included so that it does not affect the hiking program.

In the tour itinerary, you can see examples of the hotels we most often use on the tour.

The standard package includes daily breakfast. The breakfast offered will depend on the hotel. Continental breakfast is the norm. A usual setup will be a breakfast buffet that includes fruit, bread, pastries, cheese, cold cuts, coffee, tea and juice. If there is a special breakfast product that you are used to having, then we recommend that you bring it or buy it at the local supermarket.

The dinners availble in the hotels will usually be a "pilgrim menu", where you can choose between three starters, three main courses and a dessert. The starters usually include soup, salad or fish. The main courses are usually fish or meat with fries, potatoes and bread. As a rule, there is the possibility of a vegetarian dish. For dessert, for example cheesecake, creme caramel or ice cream.

The food will vary depending on the area, as each area has its own seasonal and local dishes and specialties. For example, fish will be more common in Galicia, the northern coast and the Portuguese coastal regions rather than in the inland areas.

Regarding lunch, we recommend that you either buy it at the local store in your accommodation city or stop in the cities along the route to buy basics like water, snacks, fruit, etc. You can also eat at small cafés along the way.

Your route description will include guides to water posts and eateries.

Luggage transfer is included on this tour. Upon arrival at the first hotel you will be given luggage tags along with the rest of the welcome package. You fill out the luggage tags and put them on your bags where they will remain for the duration of the tour.

A hiking holiday on the Portuguese Camino from Porto to Santiago offers varied temperatures during the spring, summer, and autumn months. The spring months, March, April, and May, offer mild temperatures between 13-22 degrees, with moderate rainfall and mild wind conditions. In the summer months, June, July, and August, the temperature rises to 22-30 degrees. Since there can be particularly hot days, we recommend that on these days you start the day's stage early to avoid the midday heat. Rainfall is rare in these months, and there will be light wind conditions, which can feel like pleasant breezes. The autumn months, September and October, offer pleasant temperatures between 18-25 degrees, rainfall increases slightly compared to other periods, and wind conditions remain mild.
