Camino dos Faros

The Lighthouse Trail along the Galician Coast

8 Days / 7 Nights
Moderate to Challenging

Imagine a walking route where the Atlantic Ocean is your constant companion — where green hills, dramatic cliffs, and tiny fishing villages form the backdrop for your next big adventure. Welcome to Camino dos Faros — also known as The Lighthouse Trail — one of Spain’s most stunning and authentic coastal walks.

The route stretches for about 200 kilometres along the Costa da Morte — “The Coast of Death” — in northwestern Galicia. The name may sound dramatic, but don’t be fooled: what awaits you here is not danger, but life, nature, and pure freedom. On this walking holiday, you’ll follow the rugged and breathtaking coastline from Ponteceso to Finisterre, passing ancient lighthouses, white sandy beaches, cliffs, green forests, and small local communities where time seems to stand still.

Camino dos Faros remains a well-kept secret — far less known than the Camino de Santiago — yet every bit as magical. Here, it’s not about pilgrims and churches, but about the sea, nature, and a sense of adventure. Along the way, you’ll pass Cabo Vilán, Cabo Touriñán (Spain’s westernmost point!), and of course the legendary Finisterre — “the end of the world” — where many walkers finish their journey watching the sun set over the Atlantic.

This tour is designed so you get the very best of Galicia — without stress. Your luggage is transported from hotel to hotel, so you can walk freely with only a daypack. Accommodation is in charming local hotels and guesthouses, where you’ll experience true Galician hospitality — and perhaps enjoy a freshly caught fish paired with a glass of crisp Albariño wine.

Along the way, you’ll encounter Galicia’s rich cultural heritage: Celtic ruins, medieval churches, abandoned lighthouses, and curious works of art — all wrapped in a landscape that shifts from cliffs to sand, forest to sea, and wild nature to peaceful villages.

This journey is for those who love nature, the sea, and freedom — for those who prefer the sound of seagulls to the noise of highways. Camino dos Faros is not just a walk; it’s a journey through the forces of nature and the soul of Galicia.
Here, you feel that the world still holds places where time moves a little slower — and where there’s space to simply be.

So lace up your boots, grab your map (or the Bering Travel app), and follow the light from lighthouse to lighthouse. This is a walking holiday with ocean views, salt in your hair, and a touch of adventure.

The route

Camino dos Faros offers varied — and at times challenging — terrain, with both ascents and descents along Galicia’s wild coastline. The surface changes between sand, forest paths, rocky sections, and small paved roads, so good hiking boots are highly recommended.

The route is best suited for walkers with some hiking experience and a decent level of fitness, as the daily stages range from 17 to 32 km. But the reward is well worth it — spectacular views, fresh sea air, and the feeling of true freedom — while your luggage is transported from hotel to hotel, allowing you to enjoy each day with a light step.

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

Welcome to Galicia – the wild and beautiful corner of Spain where the Atlantic Ocean meets green hills and ancient Celtic legends. You’ll arrive in Ponteceso, a charming little town surrounded by nature and water, where your adventure begins.

Spend the afternoon strolling through the streets, soaking up the Galician atmosphere, and perhaps enjoying some freshly caught fish or pulpo (octopus) with a glass of local white wine.

Tonight, relax and look forward to tomorrow – when you’ll take your first steps on the Camino dos FarosThe Lighthouse Trail – a journey through nature, history, and the rhythm of the ocean.

The adventure truly begins! Today’s stage leads you through forests, fields, and historic sites. Along the way, you’ll pass Dolmen Dombate and Castro A Cibda — two impressive Celtic constructions that bear witness to Galicia’s ancient past. Here, you really get a sense of just how deep the region’s history runs.

The trail winds through fragrant pine and eucalyptus forests, alive with birdsong — perfect for those who love the peace and rhythm of nature. As you approach Laxe, the landscape opens up, revealing a breathtaking view of the wide white beach and the shimmering blue sea.

Laxe is a charming coastal town with an authentic Galician atmosphere — the perfect place to sit at a small café, sip something cold, and enjoy the feeling that your walking holiday has truly begun.

A shorter day – but still full of experiences. Today’s walk is slightly shorter, yet brimming with charm and scenery. You’ll follow the trail with wonderful views over the Ría de Corme and Laxe, while the waves crash dramatically against the cliffs below.

The highlight of the day is without doubt the visit to Camelle — a quirky little fishing village where a German artist settled in the 1960s and created the famous Museum of Man – an artistic sanctuary filled with creativity and curiosities.

The route is pleasant and relaxed, giving you time to truly enjoy the natural surroundings. Your destination, Arou, is a tiny seaside gem with the ocean right at your doorstep — the perfect spot for a peaceful evening, a glass of wine, and a beautiful sunset.

Today you’ll walk one of the most iconic stretches of the entire route. The landscape is dramatic, and the feeling of walking along the “Coast of Death” is both intense and awe-inspiring. As you make your way towards Faro Vilán — one of Galicia’s most famous lighthouses — you’ll hear tales of the shipwreck The Serpent and the tragic story of the British sailors who found their final resting place at the English Cemetery.

It’s a place that both moves and inspires — steeped in legend, the power of the sea, and that unique sense of melancholy that defines Galicia.

Your destination for the day, Camariñas, is known for its traditional lace-making and its warm, welcoming atmosphere. Here, you can relax your shoulders, breathe deeply, and enjoy being in a place where time and tempo slow down just enough to let you truly unwind.

A long but beautiful day awaits – full of variety and coastal charm. Today’s stage takes you through small villages, past old watermills, green fields, and no fewer than eleven beaches! One moment you’re walking in the cool shade of the forest, the next with sand beneath your boots and the sparkling sea at your side.

Your destination is Muxía — a charming fishing town with a heart full of culture and faith. The town was severely affected by the Prestige oil spill decades ago, but has since risen again as a living symbol of Galicia’s resilience and beauty.

When you arrive, make sure to visit the Santuario da Virxe da Barca, a beautiful church perched dramatically beside the crashing Atlantic waves — a fitting end to a day that captures the wild soul of Galicia.

Today’s stage takes you all the way to Cabo Touriñán – the westernmost point of Spain! (Yes, even farther west than Finisterre — just ask the locals, they’ll proudly tell you all about it!) Standing here truly feels like being at the edge of the world, with the vast Atlantic stretching endlessly before you. The views are absolutely spectacular.

The route continues through lush green landscapes, small farms, and open stretches of coastline where you can almost always hear the soothing roar of the sea in the background.

The day ends at Nemiña Beach — one of the most beautiful and peaceful bays along the entire route. Here, you can take a well-deserved dip in the ocean or simply kick off your boots and enjoy the calm and quiet of this magical spot.

The grand finale! The last day on The Lighthouse Trail is both emotional and filled with breathtaking scenery. The path winds over rolling hills and along the coastline, with sweeping views of the Atlantic all the way. You’ll pass Monte Facho, where you’ll be rewarded with a stunning panoramic view — the perfect spot for a final group photo, or simply a quiet moment of reflection.

At last, you’ll arrive in Finisterre — for centuries believed to be “the end of the world.” Standing by the lighthouse here is a truly special experience. Many pilgrims traditionally burn their old hiking boots as a symbol of completing their journey — a moment that feels both powerful and poetic.

Celebrate your achievement with a well-deserved glass of wine and watch the sun set over the ocean — the most beautiful ending to a truly unforgettable trek.

After breakfast, it’s time to say goodbye to Galicia — with sand in your shoes, wind in your hair, and a smile on your face. Perhaps your journey home begins today, but many choose to stay an extra day in Finisterre to let the experiences truly sink in. You can stroll through the town, enjoy a meal at one of the cozy seafood restaurants, or simply sit by the ocean and think: “Yes, we did it.”
