After a delightful breakfast, you set out for the picturesque village of Hiriwadunna for a three-hour hike through the beautiful Sri Lankan countryside. The walk begins along the banks of a wewa, a man-made reservoir. The abundant birdlife, butterflies, and even the chance to spot crocodiles add an extra charm to the experience. You will also get a glimpse of the villagers’ daily lives, as they start their morning fishing or washing clothes by the lakeside.

The hike continues across a shallow stream before you cross a wider tributary on a traditional catamaran, kindly provided by a local farmer, to explore Chena cultivation – a traditional form of shifting agriculture. Along the way, you will meet a farmer who guides you through his fields and helps you pick fresh vegetables, which you then prepare together into a simple yet delicious meal, cooked in clay pots over a wood fire. This is a unique opportunity to taste authentic local cuisine.

The walk then takes you through dense scrubland, home to a variety of forest birds and wildlife, including monkeys, bears, pythons, and even elephants.

In the afternoon, you climb the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and admire the famous walls adorned with colorful frescoes. From the summit, you are rewarded with stunning views of the remarkable harmony between human ingenuity and natural beauty. The fortress complex includes the ruins of a royal palace, surrounded by an impressive network of fortifications, expansive gardens, ponds, canals, pathways, and fountains. The ascent to the top of Sigiriya takes around 1.5 to 2 hours.

After breakfast, you set off on a cycling tour to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Polonnaruwa, home to some of Sri Lanka’s finest medieval art and architecture, including the giant Buddha statues at Gal Vihara. Explore the remarkable ruins of Polonnaruwa and enjoy a sightseeing tour of this ancient city, once a thriving royal capital. The site features an impressive collection of buildings of various sizes and architectural styles, adorned interiors, as well as carefully designed irrigation systems, reservoirs, and tanks.

The cycling tour takes around three hours, after which you return to your hotel.

In the afternoon, you embark on a jeep excursion to Ritigala Nature Reserve. This ancient Buddhist monastery complex is nestled in a mountain that is also a haven for bird lovers, as it shelters several endangered species such as the black eagle, grey hornbill, Sri Lanka spurfowl, Malabar pied hornbill, and the spot-winged thrush. Ritigala is also a biodiversity hotspot within the island’s dry zone. The steep slopes, covered in evergreen forest, act as a watershed for the Malwatu Oya River, which feeds nearby reservoirs.

Beyond the well-trodden paths, the jungle is said to be home to wild elephants, leopards, sloth bears, and a diverse array of birdlife. The jeep tour and exploration of Ritigala take about 2–3 hours.

After breakfast, you drive to Kandy, Sri Lanka’s cultural capital, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its rich traditions and remarkable attractions. Kandy is a living example of Buddhism’s enduring influence on Sri Lanka, with temples, shrines, and monasteries keeping centuries-old practices alive. It was the last royal capital of Sri Lanka, nestled among the hills of the Kandy plateau, surrounded by tropical plantations. The city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.

On the way, you stop at the Dambulla Rock Cave Temple, famous for its impressive collection of Buddha statues and Sri Lanka’s finest ancient wall paintings.

After checking in at your hotel, you visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Sri Dalada Maligawa, one of the most revered Buddhist sites in the world. The temple, which houses what is believed to be a relic of the Buddha’s tooth, is a place of deep devotion not only for Sri Lankan Buddhists but also for Buddhists from around the globe.

At the end of the day, you enjoy a cultural performance featuring traditional Kandyan dancers and drummers, culminating in a dramatic “Fire Walking” display.

After breakfast, you begin your sightseeing tour of Kandy, visiting the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, Upper Lake, the market, the gem museum, and enjoy some shopping. The entire tour takes around 4–5 hours.

The Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya, originally established in 1374 as a pleasure garden for the kings of Kandy, cover 147 hectares and are home to more than 4,000 species of rare and endemic trees and plants, as well as flora from across the tropical world. It is not only a haven for researchers but also a true paradise for nature lovers. The spice garden and the orchid house are especially popular with visitors.

In the morning, you will be driven to the Knuckles Mountain Range, a popular attraction in Sri Lanka, ideal for both amateur and experienced hikers. In the afternoon, you set off on a 3–4 hour guided trek through dense forests and traditional villages, offering breathtaking views over the deep valley below. The trek begins from a tea plantation at the foot of the mountain range and continues along uneven paths through plantations, scrub jungle, and forests, descending into the eastern valley to reach the small farming village of Meemure, which is only accessible on foot.

As the name suggests, the Knuckles Mountain Range resembles the shape of a human fist. Covering an area of 155 km², the range borders the administrative districts of Kandy and Matale. It is made up of around 35 peaks rising above 915 meters and is considered the most popular trekking and hiking destination in Sri Lanka.

After the hike, you will be driven back to your hotel in Kandy.

After breakfast, you will be driven to Nuwara Eliya, one of Sri Lanka’s most scenic towns, also known as Little England. The town is beautifully surrounded by mountains, valleys, waterfalls, and tea plantations, located 6,200 feet above sea level. Back in 1826, a group of British officers came hunting on the Nuwara Eliya plain, and Sir Edward Barnes was fascinated by the area. In 1828, a road was built across the ridge at Ramboda Pass, and a convalescent station was established.

It was Sir Samuel Baker who truly fell for the charm of Nuwara Eliya. He brought dogs, horses, cattle, sheep, and more, starting a typical English-style farm here. Flowers and vegetables were imported from England and planted in the area. Although Nuwara Eliya is said to be one of the coldest places on the island, it feels like a spring day in England – though the temperature drops at night.

On the way, you will visit Ramboda Waterfall, a tea factory, and a plantation to see the production process of the world-famous Ceylon Tea and taste a pure, freshly made cup straight from the factory. You will also pass by scenic viewpoints with waterfalls.

In the afternoon, you can enjoy a city tour of Nuwara Eliya.

After breakfast, you will go on an excursion to Horton Plains National Park & World’s End, a protected area of about 10,000 hectares. The park is home to deer, giant squirrels, wild boar, hares, porcupines, and a variety of migratory birds unique to this region. According to a recent survey, there are around 16 leopards living in Horton Plains, and with a bit of luck, you may even catch a glimpse of one during your visit.

Horton Plains National Park hosts 52 species of resident birds and 11 species of migratory birds. More than 2,000–3,000 sambar deer, along with bears, monkeys, leopards, barking deer, giant squirrels, fishing cats, wild boar, and hares roam through the forests and grasslands. Most of them are rarely seen, except for the sambar deer, which are often spotted in the evenings and early mornings.

After breakfast, you will board the train to Ella, a charming town dramatically set among tea plantations on the edge of the hill country. The train journey to Ella is considered one of the most beautiful train rides in the world, offering breathtaking scenery ranging from lush green mountains to vast tea plantations. Along the way, you will also meet locals and have time to simply sit back and enjoy the stunning views.

Upon arrival in Ella, you can explore the spectacular views from Ella Gap, where the landscape drops an astonishing 3,000 meters down to the plains in the east. Ella is a fantastic base for hiking, with a variety of trails and ever-changing scenery.

The trails lead you through dense forests, past rivers and waterfalls, and into nearby villages where you can experience local life and culture during your stay. You may also choose to hike Ella Rock, crossing tea plantations while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding hills. There are many different walking options around Ella, and it is easy to find your way on your own. If you prefer, your guide can accompany you.

After breakfast, you will be driven to Sinharaja, Sri Lanka’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed virgin rainforest. The Sinharaja Forest Reserve, meaning “Lion Kingdom,” is the country’s most famous rainforest and has been recognized as a vital biodiversity hotspot. Originally declared a forest reserve in 1875, its international significance led to its designation as a biosphere reserve in 1978 and later as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.

This guided trek through Sinharaja offers you the chance to encounter a remarkable variety of flora and fauna. Walking beneath the thick rainforest canopy, you will experience the unique atmosphere of a forest where the dense foliage filters the sunlight, creating a mystical and tranquil environment.
