Family happiness on a walking holiday

Do you like to be active and go on adventures in nature? Perfect, because that's exactly what you need for a great walking holiday. For a walking holiday with children to work, it needs good planning and organisation. How long should the route be? Where will we stay overnight? What can the children experience apart from the hike? On our family walking holidays, we take care of everything and arrange for your luggage to be transported from hotel to hotel. Are you ready for a great experience with the whole family?

Hiking trails and routes for families

Exercise in the fresh air is something that all children instinctively like. To have a good hiking experience, it is important to choose the right route. That's why we use specially designed hiking routes for children, taking into account the length of the routes and the differences in altitude. The walks are chosen to allow for long breaks and time to experience little adventures off the trail along the way. When hiking with children, the little things mean a lot: the small babbling streams and lakes, the trails through the beautiful forests and over saddles, hills and valleys - the wonderful hiking routes become a whole adventure.
When choosing the routes, we also look at whether it is possible to shorten the trips by using public transport. If you wish, you can always choose to replace the hike with another activity. Depending on your children's travel and walking experience, our family walking holidays are suitable for children aged six and over. You can read much more information about the tours by clicking on the one below.

Accommodation on our walking holidays for families

All accommodation on our family walking holidays is specially selected. Depending on which trip you choose, you can expect different accommodation ranging from alpine huts to comfortable hotels. Going on a walking holiday with children places special demands on the accommodation - after all, it's important that both young and old can enjoy their stay. All the accommodation we use on our family walking holidays is experienced with walkers and families and all have spacious rooms and family-friendly staff.
Another important factor for children is that the accommodation is the destination for the day's hike and where possible we always make sure to choose accommodations that have a playground, swimming pool or other great features for families.

Walking holiday for families - with luggage transport

It doesn't get any easier than this: When you're a family on the road, it often means you have a lot of luggage with you. That won't be a problem on our walking holidays, as we'll make sure your luggage is transported from hotel to hotel and luggage transport is included in the price of all trips. This means that you just need to pack a daypack for the day's hike and we'll take care of everything else. Your suitcases will be ready your rooms when you arrive at the next hotel. In other words, you can bring anything on your walking holiday.

Travel documents

On all family walking holidays, you will receive a welcome pack on arrival at the first hotel with maps, itineraries, advice, city maps and other useful information. Our travel packs always include little ideas and tips for other experiences and activities for children to enjoy along the way and at the day's destination. You also get recommendations for good restaurants and inns. This is particularly useful on the short days when the walk doesn't take long and you have plenty of time for other experiences.

If you need help or advice during your trip, you can get in touch with us or our local partner at any time of the day or night.

Family adventure

When hiking with children, the route should be an adventure in itself. Nature has it all and it's amazing to see how a small rushing stream turns into fun water games, how seeing an animal becomes extra exciting, how visiting a small mountain hut becomes an unforgettable family moment. When we choose the routes of our family hiking trips, we not only look at the end of the trip, but also at what the route itself has to offer in terms of activities for the children. Sometimes the route passes a rope course or a playground. Special adventures, such as a boat trip or a cable car ride, are included on several trips.

Good advice for walking holidays with children

Equipment
Requirements for hiking equipment change depending on the season and the weather. All hiking trips require good clothing for everyone in the family. Clothing made from synthetic fabrics is generally better suited than cotton clothing because they effectively wick moisture away from the body. This means that clothes stay dry longer even if you sweat. The more the weather varies in your chosen region, the more versatile your clothing choices should be. A water-repellent or waterproof layer for rainy days and a warm jacket should always be in your daypack.

Tip: We recommend a softshell jacket that can be worn all year round.

When it comes to footwear, there is a difference between lightweight sports shoes and hiking boots. Hiking boots have an advantage over sports shoes because they support the ankle and generally protect against moisture. On our family walking holidays, you can choose whether you prefer hiking shoes/boots or regular sports shoes, as both will be good enough for the trips.

Tip: It is always best to wear shoes/boots that have been worn.

What does it require?

There are no special requirements for our family walking holidays. That said, we do recommend that as a family you enjoy exercise and can easily go for shorter walks of a few kilometres. You don't need to be an experienced walker at all to join us - you just need to enjoy being out in the fresh air and nature. It is important that you choose the right trip for your family and if you do, you can be sure to have an excellent hiking experience. Our walking holidays are suitable for children aged six and over.

Tip: If you are in any doubt about which trip to choose, don't hesitate to contact Bering Travel's experts for advice and guidance.

Breaks along the route

Once the kids get started on the walk and find their "stride", it's all smooth sailing. That said, remember that it's important to take plenty of short breaks to breathe out and enjoy the moment.

Tip: Children need more breaks than adults. As long as the kids aren't tired, they'll keep their spirits up, so make sure you take more breaks than you might think are necessary.

Safety on the trip and courage

Courage and willingness are certainly good to have, but they are not a prerequisite for our family walking holidays. The trips are not meant to test your courage, quite the contrary. On these trips we avoid elements of risk when planning the routes. In other words, you won't have to traverse risky via ferratas or walk close to steep cliffs. On the tours where there are more challenging stages there will also be easier alternatives.
