You can almost hear the tones of "the hills are alive, with the sound of music" while you cycle through the stunning Austrian landscape, with green fields and raw mountains beautifully reflected in the many lakes on a calm day. Salzkammergut is an area offering great cycling routes along the shores of the lakes, allowing you to put your everyday life on hold for a while. Besides being the area known from the movie The Sound of Music, Salzkammergut has plenty of natural and cultural experiences to offer. Salzburg is full of historical buildings and just a few kilometers out of town, you will experience unique panoramic landscapes.

On this trip, you will pass along 10 beautiful lakes and through small exciting towns and villages as Oberndorf, Gmunden, Bad Ischl, Obertraun, St. Wolfgang and St. Gilgen.
Along the shores of the lakes and river Salzach the terrain is flat, but between the lakes, the landscape turn more hilly. You will mainly cycle along cycling paths in cities, but in the countryside it is mostly dirt roads and beautiful forest trails.

Day 1 Arrival in Salzburg

After checking in at the hotel there will be an information meeting about the trip, and your bikes will be handed out (meeting takes place at 17.30 at the reception of the hotel).

Day 2 Salzburg – Trumer Seen lakes/Lake Wallersee approx. 45-55 km

Today, you will cycle along the Salzach to Oberndorf (birthplace of the Christmas carol "Silent Night"), Arnsdorf (the “Silent Night” Museum), Michaelbeuern (abbey), and further on into the Trumer Seen lakes country (Lake Obertrumer See, Lake Mattsee, Lake Grabensee) and partly also to Lake Wallersee. A shorter, direct version is also possible!

Day 3 Trumer Seen lakes/Lake Wallersee –Lake Mondsee approx. 50 km

On the third day, the tour will take you through the nature reserve of the Egelseen lakes to Schleedorf. Later, you will continue to the idyllic Lake Irrsee. Overnight stay in Mondsee (castle, smokehouse).

Day 4 Lake Mondsee – Lake Traunsee approx. 50-80 km

The day begins with a boat trip to Weyregg (for arrivals between 01.07. and 31.08.), in season 1 and 2 you cycle along lake Attersee. Afterwards, you will cycle through the Aurachtal valley to Lake Traunsee with Gmunden (castle Orth, ceramics factory), Altmünster (bicycle museum), and Traunkirchen ("Fishermen’s Pulpit").

Day 5 Lake Traunsee – Lake Hallstättersee – Bad Goisern/surrounding area approx. 20-35 km

By train you will go from Lake Traunsee up to Obertraun at Lake Hallstättersee (Dachstein mountainous ice caves). Later, you will continue along the lake to Hallstatt ("the loveliest lakeside location in the world", the oldest salt mine). Your today’s destination is Bad Goisern or one of the neighbouring towns.

Day 6 Bad Goisern/surrounding area – Lake Wolfgangsee approx. 35 km

Via Bad Ischl (Emperor’s Park, Emperor’s Villa, Empress Sissi’s Teahouse) you will cycle along the Ischler Ache river to Lake Wolfgangsee: You will cycle through places such as St. Wolfgang (White Horse Inn, parish church, cog railway on to the Schafberg), Strobl, Lake Abersee (Zinkenbachklamm gorge) and St. Gilgen - the Mozart village on Lake Wolfgangsee.

Day 7 Lake Wolfgangsee – Salzburg approx. 40-50 km + walking tour

On the seventh day, you will follow the cycle route to St. Gilgen ("Mozart Village"), the short hiking trail into the Tiefbrunnau, past the Hintersee lake, and the Strubklamm gorge into the Wiestal valley (dam); You will come through the Glasenbachklamm into the Salzachtal valley. Shortly before reaching Salzburg, it is worth visiting the castle Schloss Hellbrunn (park, zoo, water games). Your destination is the festival and Mozart city of Salzburg with its numerous attractions (fortress, old town).

Day 8 Departure

After breakfast you will be checking out for your individual departure.

Note:The price is based on at least two participants accommodated in a double or twin room. For a surcharge we can organize the tour for individuals traveling alone. Contact us for price.

Dates of departure
You can go on this trip from the 25th of April to the 11th of October 2015. If you cannot find your preferred traveling date in the booking system, send an email with your request to [email protected], and we will get back to you as soon as possible. 
- Please note that it is 'land only' prices.

* The boat sails only when weather allows:
In high season from approximately 01.07 to 08.09.
In the early period from about 19.05 to 30.06 (weekends only)
In late season, from about 9.09 to 15.09 (weekends only)

Should the boat not be running on your trip, you will be cycling the extra distance of about 20km. You will receive further information on this at the welcome meeting in the beginning of the trip (This change will not change the price of the trip).


Please note that transportation to and from the destination is NOT included in the package, and that you have to make sure to book your own flight. This is easily done online. It is your responsibility to ensure that the flight schedule fits start and end dates of your trip. We recommend that you book the trip with us before you buy your plane tickets.
From Salzburg Airport there is about 15km to the first hotel. The taxi price for this tour is about 15-20€. Or you can take the O-busline No. 2 departing from Salzburg Airport at Vogelweiderstrasse. The bus takes about 30 minutes and costs about 3 € per person.


You will stay at nice 3-star tourist class hotels and charming guesthouses with breakfast included.

Trip grading

This trip will take you cycling on good roads, dirt roads and trails with a limited amount of traffic. It is a level 2 with some longer ascents. Read more about our grading system here.

Bike rental

The bikes are unisex, chosen due to its strong quality combined with maximum comfort. The bikes are equipped with lights, luggage racks, mud guards, 21 Shimano gears, a lock and a comfortable saddle. Furthermore, there is attached a water-repellent bag on the luggage rack and handlebars, and in addition you will receive a small repair kit, with relevant tools, a spare bicycle tube and a pump.
In order to individually adjust the bikes to fit you, it is important that you inform us the body height of all participants in the "comments" box when booking the trip.
Bike rental costs € 110,- per person for the entire week.

Electric bikes
On this trip it is also possible to rent an electric bike, which will make it possible to cross the terrain with a smile. If your legs get tired, the electric engine will support you, so you do not fall behind.
It does not require any previous experience to ride an electric bike. As long as you keep the pedals going, the electric engine will assist you to reach a maximum speed of 25 km/h. The engine is powered by a removable, rechargeable battery with a reach of 120-180 km per load. Electric bikes come with the same equipment as the regular bikes.
Rental of an electric bike is € 200,- for the entire week.

Cancellation insurance

Cancellation Insurance is the customer's own responsibility. When you book a trip with us, you should consider whether you want to take out cancellation insurance against sudden illness, or whether you are already covered. You have to arrange the cancellation insurance in you home country.

Travel insurance

We highly recommend that you are covered by a good travel insurance covering at least Medical Expenses, Illness, Personal Accident, Baggage and Repatriation. The customer is responsible to take the necessary travel insurance that covers these costs. Mountain Adventures, or our local partners, do not have any responsibility for our customers not being covered by a necessary travel insurance. You have to arrange your insurance in your home country.

Passports and visa

It is the customer’s responsibility to have a valid passport. It is also the customer’s responsibility to seek and obtain any necessary visa for travelling to the booked destination. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the expected return. Note that there may be special visa requirements for different foreign nationalities. Please note that processing time for visas to some countries may be several weeks. Mountain Adventures have no responsibility for any lack of travel documents. Be aware of any transit visa requirements.


We advise you to contact a medical specialist or your personal doctor or a licensed vaccination clinic. In case vaccination is recommended it is advised to bring your vaccination certificate when traveling.
