Are you afraid of Mont Blanc? See the dangerous places here!

We often get inquiries from people who are considering Tour du Mont Blanc but who are nervous about the trip. It may be because they have a severe fear of heights or because they have just heard that it is a tough walk. It is undoubtedly one of the tougher hiking holidays (difficulty 3-4), but regarding a fear of heights there is nothing to be worried about.

In the following, I will describe the individual days and show pictures of the "dangerous" passages. When I mention the days, it is with reference to our hiking holiday around Mont Blanc, which you can find here:

Itinerary for Tour du Mont Blanc

Day 1: Arrival
No hiking this day, so no problems.

Day 2: Les Contamines to Les Chapieux
Today, there are no passages that could be said to be dangerous or challenging for people with a fear of heights.

Day 3: Read Chapieux to Courmayer (or Refuge Elena if you're on the dorm version of the tour)
Not today either. No passages to worry about here.

Day 4: Courmayer (or Refuge Elena) to Champex (Val d'Arpette)
I get that this mights seem a little boring now, but there is nothing to worry about on this day either.

Day 5: Champex (Val d'Arpette) to La Forclaz (or Trient)
Here we have something. Today you reach the highest point of the hiking holiday, where you walk across the Fenêtre d 'Arpette (2,750 m). This is the most difficult section of the whole trip and you should avoid walking this way if the weather is bad. However, we have an alternative this day which goes through Bovine and is very safe and will not be a problem if you have a fear of heights.

Day 6: La Forclaz (or Trient) to Le Tour or Argentière
Today there is nothing to worry about.

Day 7: Le Tour or Argentière to Chamonix
If you go the normal route on this day, then you must ascend some ladders/stairs (see the pictures). If this looks daunting, remember that we have two alternative routes on this day, which have no ladders and will not be a problem for people with a fear of heights.

Day 8: Return

You are now in Chamonix and are just going home or further out into the world. So nothing to be nervous about here.
