If you dream of a leisurely surfing holiday, where the atmosphere is relaxed, the mood lifted and where you can learn - or become better at - surfing, then Lagos in Portugal is just the place to go. Here we have created a true oasis for surfers of all levels and the warm days rush past while our guests surf at the different beaches in the area.
In addition to great surfing, one of the very special things at the Surf House in Lagos is undoubtedly the cozy atmosphere. Whether you are travelling in a group or just coming alone, it takes no more than five minutes to feel at home and part of the Surf-House group. This is also why 80 percent of our guests visiting the Surf-House return year after year. It must be experienced!
Every day at 9 o'clock, the Land Rovers get filled up with people and surf gear, after which they roar out and find the best surf spot of the day. At the beach you will be instructed, how to surf - if you wish - and then you just surf until we return to the Surf-House at approx. 5pm.
It is important to underline that this is not a surfing factory. There is a strong focus on you learning to surf and experiencing the allure of the sport.
What you get out of this trip
You live at the "Surf House", which has room for 21 guests and in a typical week there are between 14 and 18 people. The "Surf House" has a kitchen that guests can share, in addition there is a laundry room, a living room, free WiFi and two large terraces and a barbecue area - and of course stylish rooms for everyone! The evenings at the Surf House often take place on the roof terraces, together with the other residents.
You arrive at Lagos Airport, after which you'll either get picked up and driven all the way to the Surf House or you take the train to Lagos. If you are picked up, the trip takes just under an hour and the trainride takes about 2½ hours.
Once you arrive at the Surf House, you are shown to your room. If you arrive early, you may be able to join the others and go out surfing. In the evening everyone at the Surf House goes out to eat together - and you are naturally more than welcome to join.
You get up and eat breakfast at the Surf House while chatting with the others at the house. The cars for surfing set off between 9:15 and 10am, and return at approx. 5pm in the afternoon.
The surfing usually takes place at the west coast and the journey takes approximately 30-40 minutes each way, depending on where the waves are the best on each day. The surfing starts with a warmup, followed by two hours of instructions. After lunch there are another two hours of instructions before we go back.
The evenings are typically spent together with the other participants, where we go out and eat together or enjoy the rooftop terrace at the Surf House.
This is unfortunately the end of the surfing holiday in Lagos. You will be driven by car or take the train to the airport from where you fly back home or further out into the world.
On this trip you can choose between two different accommodation options. You can either stay at the Surf House, where you share a room with others (possibly your fellow travellers - primarily in double rooms) or you can stay at Pensao, which are two guesthouses that we use for those, who either want more peace or who want to have single rooms.
The tour is possible from the 1st of March until the first week of January each year.
If you travel alone and choose "shared room", you will typically share the room with other participants. The Surf House consists of 5 double rooms and 2 "dorms" (Men's dormitory has 4 places in two bunk beds / Girl-dorm has 3 places with one bunk bed and a single bed)
If you prefer living alone, you need to choose to stay at Pensao (at an additional fee).
Please note that transportation to and from Faro, Portugal is NOT included in the package, and that you have to make sure to book your own flight that matches the holiday start- and end date. This is easily done online via a flight booking engines such as Momondo or Skyscanner, or by contacting us for an offer on firstname.lastname@example.org.
Important: We recommend that you book the trip with us before you buy your plane tickets.
From Faro Airport to the Surf House
You can take the train, a taxi or we can arrange for you to be driven back and forth
If you'd like to take the train:
It is important that you arrive in Faro before 5pm in order to make it on the last train to Lagos. It departs from the train station at about 7.30pm and costs 7 euros. A taxi from the airport to the station costs approx. 10 euros.
Transfer to/from Faro Airport:
If you choose this option, you will be picked up at the airport and driven all the way to the Surf House. It is undoubtedly the most convenient option. The trip takes a little less than an hour. You can opt for this transfer when you book the trip.
If you arrive via Lisbon, do as follows:
1. You land in Lisbon and go from there to "Sete Rios Station". You can either take a taxi from the airport or take the metro to the "Jardim Zoológico" metro station. With the metro you take the red line to S.Sebastiâo and from there take the blue line two stops to Jardim Zoológico.
2. You take the train or the bus:
The train: 3h 40m - 5 departures a day
The Jardim Zoológico Metro Station is located below Sete Rios Station, so you just go up with the escalator and find the ticket office. Between Lisbon and Lagos you have to change trains once (in the city of Tunes).
You can see the departures on CP.PT
The bus: 3h 45m
When you arrive at Jardim Zoológico at Sete Rios Station, exit the building and look for signs indicating "Rodoviario". Outside the building you will find a small escalator that goes up to the bus terminal. There you can buy tickets to Lagos.
You can see the departures on Eva Bus
Breakfast at the Surf House is very relaxed and includes various breakfast products like bread, butter, cheese, yoghurt etc. You just take as much as you want. Lunch is served on the beach inbetween surfing and can, for example, be a pasta salad and some sandwiches.
In the evenings it is common for guests at the Surf House to eat out at a restaurant. Naturally, you can decide yourself, if you want to go out and eat together with the others, find a place for yourself or if you want to prepare food in the Surf House kitchen. A dinner at a restaurant incl. beverages typically runs up to 20-25 euros per person.
On two evenings a week there is common eating on the roof terrace, where Rachel prepares delicious food (eg Paella) and there is a free flow of Sangria. The price for common meals is about 20-25 euros, but it can vary. It is again completely optional.
