Portugal is the perfect place for a yoga holiday and we've found the best places to combine yoga with all the other activities you can do.
There are some places in Portugal that we particularly love. These include the Algarve, the Azores, Sintra and Madeira, where we think the conditions are ideal for yoga in Portugal.
Speaking of the Algarve, the town of Lagos holds a special place in our hearts. The town is insanely charming and abounds with beautiful houses, narrow cobbled streets, good food and great people. That's why we have our Surf & Yoga in the Algarve and our Surf, SUP & Yoga Retreat in the Algarve there every year. These are yoga holidays where everyone can join in and will have trips that are packed with activities.
Our yoga holiday in Portugal takes place at The Lodge near Sintra in central Portugal. The trip is an individual journey and you are therefore free to choose the date of your trip. There is yoga morning and evening each day and the yoga is called Yoga Libre / Free yoga, which is a combination of different yoga styles, where in the morning the focus will be on energizing and in the evening the focus will be on relaxation.
Our yoga holiday in Madeira is all about Ayurveda and in addition to the yoga there is a focus on vegetarian food. It is also possible to choose from a host of Ayurvedic treatments at the hotel, with a full staff of therapists on hand. Madeira is a great place for hiking, so we'd certainly suggest taking a walk along the Levadas when you're looking around.
In the Azores, we've created a unique active yoga holiday that combines yoga with surfing and hiking. This way you get to experience all the best that the Azores have to offer. On the trip, you'll stay well in a small boutique hotel and our staff will take care of everything. The island of Sao Miguel is stunningly beautiful and there's so much to do when you're not doing yoga, surfing or hiking.
You don't need experience
Anyone can join a yoga holiday in Portugal, so you don't need to worry about whether you're skilled enough at yoga (or the other activities). The yoga will always be tailored to suit each participant and all yoga teachers are experts at varying the poses so that everyone can join in. There are almost always beginners on the trips, so if you're a beginner, you're not alone.
Portugal and its delicious food
It's hard not to get excited about Portuguese cuisine. Fish and vegetables in particular taste fantastic, but there are other delicacies to try too. These include Pastel de Nata, a kind of pastry, and Chicken Piri Piri, which is chicken marinated in a delicious chilli sauce.
It's also easy to travel in Portugal as a vegetarian and the vast majority of restaurants have plenty to choose from, whatever your preference.
Yin Yoga in Portugal
Some of our sure winners have always been our Yin Yoga Treats in Portugal, which we have been organising for many years already. Most trips take place at The Lodge or in the Algarve and the tours are an intense yoga experience, with Kristine teaching a full four hours of yin yoga each day. In addition to yin yoga, these retreats also focus on vegan food, prepared to perfection by chef Eva Marques Bellas. She truly understands how to cook vegan food that satisfies all the senses and even meat eaters won't feel like anything is missing. You have to try it.
