Walking holiday in Lanzarote and La Graciosa - GR131

Lanzarote is magnificent!
The power of the volcanic eruptions, the people and the world-famous artist Cesar Manrique's buildings have made this Canary Island a well-known destination for travellers and beach lovers. It is believed to be the first of the Canary Islands to be inhabited, the towns are steeped in history. Lanzarote is also known for its excellent wines, and the vineyards of La Geria were declared a work of art by the Museum of Modern Art in New York in the 1960s. The large cone-shaped holes in the volcanic gravel have proved unique for wine growing - and impressive it looks.

A few years ago, a major marking of hiking trails was done to the delight of locals and tourists alike. One of the largest walking routes in the Canary Islands (GR 131) runs through Lanzarote from west to east. Along the hike, we have chosen high quality accommodation in typical local places. This island really should be enjoyed on foot. It offers surprisingly glorious terrain and generally good weather.

Highlights

  • The spectacular Le Geria vineyards
  • Hike the 131 from west to east
  • Volcanic landscape
  • Hiking on La Graciosa
  • The charming village of Yaizia
  • The coastal town of Orzola

Individual travel to Lanzarote by plane.
A transfer will meet you at the airport and take you to the first hotel in Yaizia.

Hotel (example): La Era

Day 2 Walking from Yaiza via Uga to El Islote

You start in one of the most beautiful villages in the Canary Islands, Yaizia. You pass through the small town of Uga and from here the walk crosses the breathtaking wine region of La Geria. The vineyards are quite special with vines grown at the bottom of large cone-shaped holes in the lava rock. This protects the vines from the strong Canarian winds. The contrast between the black soil and the bright vine leaves is a beautiful sight. You continue the walk to El Islote where you spend the night.

Day 3 Walking from El Islote to Nazaret

After visiting the amazing sculpture "Monumento al Campesino" in San Bartolomé. This 15 metre high fertility sculpture was built from disused water tanks and is dedicated to the conejero farmers who worked hard to produce crops in Lanzarote's volcanic soil. After the visit, the tour heads east through an agricultural area known for its good goat cheese to the town of Nazaret.
Overnight in Nazaret.

Day 4 Walking from Nazaret to Haría

You will walk from Nazaret and then arrive at the historic centre of Teguise - the old capital of Lanzarote. There is a lot to see in Teguise. Museums, historic buildings, local shops, restaurants etc. It's definitely worth stopping here to have a look around before continuing your walk. After Teguise, the route heads steadily uphill, with stunning views over both of the island's coastlines. You pass a beautiful chapel and shortly after a military installation with an unusual appearance and the nickname `The Football`, which marks Lanzarote's highest point `Peñas del Chache` at 671m. After enjoying the views, the tour descends steadily before arriving in the charming village of Haría, where you stay for the next two nights.

Day 5 Walking from Haría to Arrieta

Today's hike is easy, and mainly goes downhill towards the coast. You will have the opportunity to visit Cesar Manrique's museum on the way, if interested. As you walk out of Haría, you enter an agricultural area, with vineyards, through which you stroll leisurely. The destination of the walk is the sea, at the village of Arrieta. Don't forget your swimwear!
The beach here is lovely and there are plenty of restaurants to choose from for lunch.
After enjoying the afternoon at leisure, take the local bus back to Haría (or taxi).

Alternatively, spend the day just relaxing in Haría and seeing the sights or take the bus/taxi to Arrieta and relax by the beach.
Overnight in Haría.

Day 6 Walking from Haría to Orzola

First you reach the small village of Maguez, before the terrain changes to farmland, where potatoes, carrots, garlic, figs etc. are grown. You hike on the slopes around the volcano Monte Corona, where you have unique views behind you up to the Peñas del Chache, from the tour a few days ago.
The stunning views continue on the walk down the coast towards Orzola. Here you'll see traditional fishing boats and cliff-face outcrops beautifully set against the water. Here you spend the last two nights of the tour.

Overnight in Orzola.

Day 7 Explore the Island La Graciosa

Today you take the ferry to the small island of La Graciosa, just 2 km from Lanzarote. The trip takes about 20 minutes and we recommend that you go in the morning so that you have as much time as possible. There is the possibility of a shorter and a longer hike. Either way, the day offers beautiful views of the stunning coastline as well as the other islands in the distance. The walk back is through sand dunes before you reach the return to the beautiful port town. Lunch at one of the many seafood restaurants is a must before taking the ferry back to Orzola.
Your last evening is spent in Orzola.

Trip grading

The hike is level 2 and some of the route is on relatively rocky passages and paths. Therefore a good basic fitness is required. There may be a few stretches on the stages where the paths go near cliff sides and slopes. With a slow pace and common sense, these can be passed without problems.
Read more about our trip grading system here.

Trip notes

When booking the trip, you will receive all relevant pre-tour information. On individual self-guided tours trip notes, maps and other destination material will be given to you upon arrival at the first accommodation.
