Walking holiday in Sardinia - The wild east coast

Breathtaking & rugged: Hiking in the Orosei nature park

8 Days / 7 Nights
Moderate to Challenging

On this walking holiday you can expect unique walks between the mountains and the sea in Sardinia’s “Wild East”. Picturesque, rugged, spectacular, plain and simply wonderful! The daily routes offer a perfect mix: beautiful views of the rugged coastline, the blue-glistening bays and the Mediterranean karst – this is an area of land that is full of colours and smells.

The Gulf of Orosei and the Ogliastra are not known as the loveliest places in Sardinia for nothing. The peace that you get on these walks is unique and is perfect for watching the grazing flocks of sheep, the donkeys but also the eagles and the vultures. In the Spring, you are surrounded by the flourishing and lovely scented blossom in Macchia, which emits all year around thanks to the fragrant aroma of the rosemary, bay trees and other Mediterranean herbs.

Highlights on this tour

The route

You will walk along lovely footpaths along the coastline and in the highlands. Sardinia is mainly made out of limestone cliffs, which means that you will need to be surefooted because you will often be walking on rocky and stony paths. Good fitness is needed for the walks as you will be hiking for about 6.5 hours each day.

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

The small coastal town is located in a picturesque location between the steep cliffs of the Gulf of Orosei and the long Ogliastra sandy beaches. To get in the mood for your tour, go for a leisurely stroll along the beach or why not go for a swim in the sea.

Hotel (example): Hotel Nicoletta

A scenic coastal trail guides you to the impressive limestone pinnacle of Pedra Longa. From there, the path heads inland, climbing narrow tracks beneath dramatic cliffs until you arrive at the first hilltops. Again and again, breathtaking panoramas open up across the turquoise sea. Passing flocks of sheep and through the fragrant maquis, the route eventually leads down to the mountain village of Baunei.

Hotel (example): Hotel Goloritzé

After a short transfer, today’s adventure takes you on a memorable hike to the stunning bay of Cala Goloritzé – one of the true highlights of the trip. The trail leads through a gorge with impressive views of towering cliffs and a dramatic 120m rock pinnacle reflecting in the sparkling, crystal-clear water. Here you can enjoy a refreshing swim in the magical bay before heading back to Golgo, where the cosy “Rifugio” offers comfort and rest.

Hotel (example): Cooperativa Goloritzé

Today’s hike takes you across the untamed and romantic Golgo plateau towards the striking Arcobaleno natural rock arch – today’s main destination. From this vantage point, you are rewarded with sweeping views across the deep-blue sea below. Those seeking more adventure can continue along steep tracks, descending via rustic juniper ladders to the enchanting Cala Mariolu bay, where a swim in the turquoise sea awaits.

Hotel (example): Cooperativa Goloritzé

After a short transfer to the Cala Sisine beach, you will walk uphill between the carob trees and the holm oaks. At the same time, you can marvel at the rugged coast and the glistening sea. Your path takes you via an endless karst plateau to the wonderful swimming bay, Cala Luna. This is one of the nicest beaches in Sardinia. Then take the boat to the holiday destination, Cala Gonone where you can spend the next days right by the sea.

Hotel (example): Bue Marino

A magnificent walk takes you via the small and well-hidden rocky bay Cala Fuili to Cala Luna. You will go along a shady hiking trail through forest and coastal terrain past hidden caves and gorges. After a refreshing swim in the sea and a stop in a beach bar, you take a ship pack to Cala Gonone with the option to take a stop at the fascinating stalactite caves in Bue Marino.

The hike below the striking Monte Irveri massif guides you towards the charming sandy beach of Cala Cartoe. From the cliffs, breathtaking views open across the Gulf of Orosei in its entirety. High above the shoreline, you can take a moment to reflect on your week of hiking before completing the final kilometres through the aromatic pine forest along the coast back to Orosei.
