Walking holiday in Salzkammergut for Families

8 Days / 7 Nights
Moderate
Group of hikers walking on green mountain slope in Salzkammergut. Adults and children with backpacks traverse grassy hillside under blue sky.

The essentials at a glance

Self-guided mountain walking tour in Austria's Salzkammergut region around Lake Wolfgangsee. Moderate difficulty with 4 days of hiking covering approximately 59 km through alpine pastures, mountain huts, and scenic trails. Accommodation includes 3 nights in 3-4 star hotels and 4 nights in cosy alpine huts. Highlights include cable car rides, panoramic views of mountains and glaciers, traditional cheese-making experiences, and visits to Genneralm and Postalm alpine pastures.

During this week's hiking holiday you can enjoy beautiful views of Lake Wolfgang, the Tote Gebrige Mountains, the Dachstein Glacier and the Hohe Tauern. Occasionally, you'll stop at mountain huts, which are beautifully located on the seats and we recommend you try the many specialities such as apple pie or kaiserschmarrn. Or how about the famous dessert ‘Pofesen’ from the Osterhorn mountains. The traditional mountain huts in the Osterhorn east of Salzburg are a perfect place for children.

In this hiking paradise you'll find several routes suitable for all ages. You'll hike along isolated trails, through gorges and high into the mountains, meeting cows, sheep and horses along the way. A great walking holiday in Austria for the whole family.

Dog travelling with you
It is possible to bring your dog(s) on this holiday. When booking, simply enter the dog's breed and shoulder height in the message box and we'll make sure you stay at hotels that allow dogs. Please note that there may be extra costs for the dog at different hotels and that these must be paid directly to the hotel. These will typically be relatively small amounts between 0-20 euros.

Highlights of the trip

  • Enchanting Salzkammergut and Wolfgangsee
  • Abarena Children's Adventure Park at Wolfgangsee and the animal village
  • Kleefeld Zoo with wild animals
  • Postalm with the climbing park

The route

We recommend that children are at least 8 years old on this tour and that all participants have a good basic fitness level. In addition, we recommend that children can easily hike for a few hours at a time and have some hiking experience. The hikes are along hiking trails and forest paths. The trails are good and offer great views of the mountains and Lake Wolfgangsee.

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

After arriving at picturesque Lake Wolfgangsee, you’ll have time to discover the surroundings and enjoy a relaxing walk along the lakeshore. You may also choose to ride Austria’s steepest cog railway up the Schafberg, where magnificent views across the mountains and lakes of the Salzkammergut await.

Hotel (example): Aberseehof

Starting from the shores of Lake Wolfgangsee, you’ll climb towards the first alpine pasture and the Kleefeld wildlife park. Here, you may spot a variety of animals, including roe deer, red deer and ibex. There is also a playground for anyone with energy to spare.

The route continues around the far side of the Sparber mountain to Schartenalm, an idyllic alpine pasture surrounded by dramatic rocky peaks. On the return walk, you’ll pass a traditional Austrian restaurant where you can enjoy game specialities from its own wildlife farm while admiring magnificent views towards St. Wolfgang.

Hotel (example): Aberseehof

Today’s walk takes you into the beautiful alpine landscape of the Osterhorn mountains. From St. Gilgen, known as the “Mozart village”, you’ll ride the cable car up to the Zwölferhorn. At the top, magnificent views unfold across Lake Wolfgangsee and towards the distant glaciers.

You’ll then follow a scenic panoramic trail past a thundering waterfall and through peaceful forests to Genneralm. Here, you’ll spend two nights in a welcoming mountain hut, surrounded by green alpine meadows and an impressive circle of peaks.

Hotel (example): Posch´n Hütte

Today can be as relaxing or as active as you wish. You may choose to stay at Genneralm and experience everyday alpine life among grazing cows while learning how the local cheese is made. Alternatively, set out on a walk to explore some of the surrounding mountain pastures. Those looking for an extra challenge can climb to a scenic viewpoint.

In the evening, you can look forward to a hearty pan of traditional Kasnockn, prepared with homemade alpine cheese.

Hotel (example): Posch´n Hütte

Today’s walk leads through a peaceful high valley dotted with small alpine huts and surrounded by impressive mountain slopes. The trail winds past dramatic gorges and across pastures where herds of cows graze along the way. Your destination is the heart of the Postalm region, where you’ll spend the next two nights in another traditional mountain hut.

Hotel (example): Huberhütte

Today offers plenty of possibilities. Follow the scenic Almblumenweg, enjoy an extended circuit through the alpine pastures or climb one of the surrounding peaks—the choice is yours.

A visit to the dairymaid at the Labenberg hut is highly recommended, where you can look inside the traditional cheese dairy and enjoy a hearty local meal. Other highlights include the historic Postalm hut and the charming Postalm Chapel, which was built in honour of Empress Sissi.

Hotel (example): Huberhütte

For the final stage of your walking holiday, you can follow a beautiful trail down to Lake Wolfgangsee and today’s destination. Alternatively, use your Salzkammergut Card to visit one of the area’s attractions and travel to the lake by bus.

Once there, you’ll have plenty to choose from. Take a boat trip across the lake, ride the cog railway up the Schafberg, spend time at the Abarena children’s adventure park or enjoy a thrilling trip on the summer toboggan run. These are just a few of the many ways to round off your holiday.

Hotel (example): Aberseehof

Now the journey is over. You will leave the hotel during the morning. It is possible to arrange extra nights at the last hotel of the tour. Please contact us if you would like this.

This journey has difficulty level 2

Grade 2
Easy hiking on reasonably good trails. The day walks will last 4-6 hours in hilly terrain. Anyone in good physical condition can participate. Your luggage will be transported and you only carry a light daypack. Requires comfortable footwear such as trekking shoes or hiking boots.

Read more about our grading system here.

Starting in 2025, travelers from visa-exempt countries will need an ESS or ETIAS authorization to enter EU nations. This system enhances border security while simplifying entry procedures. Ensure compliance by applying online before your trip to avoid delays.
You can read more about it here.

On this journey there is a discount for children and people sharing a room with "two fully paying adults". The amount of discount depends on age; thus:

Children under 5.99 years: free
Children between 6 and 11.99 years: 50% discount
Children between 12 - 14.99 years: 25% discount
People from 15 years and up: 10% discount

Example 1
You are 2 adults and 1 child. Here it's very simple because you're staying in the same room. The child gets a discount compared to the prices above.

Example 2
You are 2 adults and 2 children (aged 5 and 13). Here you have two options. If you want to stay in two double rooms, it will be full price for all participants. If you want to stay in the same room (e.g. a family room), then both children will get a discount (free and 25% discount respectively).

Example 3
You are 2 adults and 3 children (age: 7, 13 and 15). In this case, you will probably need two double rooms where the youngest child sleeps with the parents. Therefore, there will only be a discount for the youngest child aged 7, who will receive a 50% discount.

Example 4
You are 3 adults who want to sleep in the same double room. The extra adult will receive a 10% discount.

Please note
It is important that you understand that it is your own responsibility when you choose to bring children on the tours. You should check the descriptions of the difficulty levels and decide whether the specific tour is suitable for your child.

We recommend taking out travel insurance that covers at least illness, accident, repatriation, lost holiday, luggage and liability. As a customer, you are responsible for taking out the necessary travel insurance to cover these costs.

Before taking out insurance, you should check whether you are already covered by travel or cancellation insurance through your home insurance company, credit card or similar - please note that there may be differences in insurance coverage.

When you book a trip with us, we plant a tree in Kenya.

Bering Travel partners with Growing Trees Network, which has been planting trees in Kenya since 2020 in collaboration with Seniorer uden Grænser (Seniors Without Borders). The trees are planted with small-scale local farmers in the Mount Kenya region, as well as at schools, where the fruit helps supplement students’ diets and is incorporated into their learning.

The trees are planted using the shamba method – a sustainable approach that combines reforestation with agricultural crops. This keeps the soil covered with vegetation throughout the year, helping to prevent nutrient loss and reduce erosion.

The contribution to tree planting comes directly from Bering Travel’s own earnings and is not added to the price of your trip.

This initiative is not intended as a carbon offset for travel, but as a way to make a positive contribution.
