Mountain Walking in Salzkammergut

8 Days / 7 Nights
Moderate

During this week's hiking holiday you can enjoy beautiful views of Lake Wolfgang, the Tote Gebrige Mountains, the Dachstein Glacier and the Hohe Tauern. Occasionally, you'll stop at mountain huts, which are beautifully located on the seats and we recommend you try the many specialities such as apple pie or kaiserschmarrn. Or how about the famous dessert ‘Pofesen’ from the Osterhorn mountains. The traditional mountain huts in the Osterhorn east of Salzburg are a perfect place for children.

In this hiking paradise you'll find several routes suitable for all ages. You'll hike along isolated trails, through gorges and high into the mountains, meeting cows, sheep and horses along the way. A great walking holiday in Austria for the whole family.

Dog travelling with you
It is possible to bring your dog(s) on this holiday. When booking, simply enter the dog's breed and shoulder height in the message box and we'll make sure you stay at hotels that allow dogs. Please note that there may be extra costs for the dog at different hotels and that these must be paid directly to the hotel. These will typically be relatively small amounts between 0-20 euros.

Highlights of the trip

  • Abarena Children's Adventure Park at Wolfgangsee and the animal village
  • Kleefeld Zoo with wild animals

The route

We recommend that children are at least 8 years old on this tour and that all participants have a good basic fitness level. In addition, we recommend that children can easily hike for a few hours at a time and have some hiking experience. The hikes are along hiking trails and forest paths. The trails are good and offer great views of the mountains and Lake Wolfgangsee.

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

You arrive at your first hotel where you check in, are shown to your room and given the welcome pack with maps and directions.

Hotel (example): Aberseehof

You'll start from the shores of Lake Wolfgangsee and hike up to the first mountain hut and nature reserve of the tour, Kleefeld. Here you can expect to encounter numerous wild animals such as deer and wild goats. If the kids have more energy, there's also a playground. You'll continue on to Schartenalm, which is idyllically situated between towering mountain peaks. On the way back, you'll pass a hut that's perfect for a snack and offers a fantastic view of St Wolfgang.

Hotel (example): Aberseehof

Today's route takes you up to the seats in the Osterhorn area. Take the bus to the Mozart village of St. Gilgen from where the cable car takes you up to the Zwölferhorn, from where you have views of the glacier areas. Via the panoramic route and via the Illingeralm you hike to the Königsbachalm. In the forest at Nöckelberg you can see cascading waterfalls before finally ascending to Genneralm. Once you arrive at Genneralm, you'll stay in a comfortable hut for the next two nights, surrounded by lush pastures and with views of the mountain peaks.

Hotel (example): Posch´n Hütte

Today you have several different options. You can either relax at the mountain hut and watch the cows and visit the hut's cheese production. Or you can go on a hike to one of the neighbouring cabins. The brave can even choose to climb up to one of the many viewpoints. In the evening you can enjoy a round of ‘Kasnockn’ (a traditional cheese dish made with the cheese produced at the cabin).

Hotel (example): Posch´n Hütte

Today's hike takes you through an idyllic high valley with numerous small huts on the mountainsides. Grazing cows enjoy life along the path that winds along gorges all the way to Postalm. Here in Postalm you also have two nights in a cosy mountain hut.

Hotel (example): Huberhütte

Today you also have several options. You can go for an easy hike in the flower-filled fields or you can go on an adventure by climbing one of the surrounding mountain peaks. There are plenty of options.

Again, we recommend visiting the local dairy at Labenberghütte to see how cheese is made. The church in Postalm was built under Empress Sissi and is also worth a visit.

Hotel (example): Huberhütte

At the end of the week, you can either enjoy one last hike down to Lake Wolfgangsee, where you'll be staying for the night, or you can choose to take the bus down and visit the other attractions that your Salzkammergut Card gives you a discount on. There are many options: you could take the boat across the lake, take the railway up to Schafberg, visit the large play park Abarena, enjoy the animal park ‘Dorf der Tiere’ or something completely different

Hotel (example): Aberseehof

Now the journey is over. You will leave the hotel during the morning. It is possible to arrange extra nights at the last hotel of the tour. Please contact us if you would like this.

This journey has difficulty level 2

Grade 2
Easy hiking on reasonably good trails. The day walks will last 4-6 hours in hilly terrain. Anyone in good physical condition can participate. Your luggage will be transported and you only carry a light daypack. Requires comfortable footwear such as trekking shoes or hiking boots.

Read more about our grading system here.

Starting in 2025, travelers from visa-exempt countries will need an ESS or ETIAS authorization to enter EU nations. This system enhances border security while simplifying entry procedures. Ensure compliance by applying online before your trip to avoid delays.
You can read more about it here.

On this journey there is a discount for children and people sharing a room with "two fully paying adults". The amount of discount depends on age; thus:

Children under 5.99 years: free
Children between 6 and 11.99 years: 50% discount
Children between 12 - 14.99 years: 25% discount
People from 15 years and up: 10% discount

Example 1
You are 2 adults and 1 child. Here it's very simple because you're staying in the same room. The child gets a discount compared to the prices above.

Example 2
You are 2 adults and 2 children (aged 5 and 13). Here you have two options. If you want to stay in two double rooms, it will be full price for all participants. If you want to stay in the same room (e.g. a family room), then both children will get a discount (free and 25% discount respectively).

Example 3
You are 2 adults and 3 children (age: 7, 13 and 15). In this case, you will probably need two double rooms where the youngest child sleeps with the parents. Therefore, there will only be a discount for the youngest child aged 7, who will receive a 50% discount.

Example 4
You are 3 adults who want to sleep in the same double room. The extra adult will receive a 10% discount.

Please note
It is important that you understand that it is your own responsibility when you choose to bring children on the tours. You should check the descriptions of the difficulty levels and decide whether the specific tour is suitable for your child.

We recommend taking out travel insurance that covers at least illness, accident, repatriation, lost holiday, luggage and liability. As a customer, you are responsible for taking out the necessary travel insurance to cover these costs.

Before taking out insurance, you should check whether you are already covered by travel or cancellation insurance through your home insurance company, credit card or similar - please note that there may be differences in insurance coverage.
