Italy - Cycling holiday from Dolomites to Venice

The Dolomite mountains are on the UNESCO World Heritage List and include some of the most famous and spectacular mountain peaks in the world. Despite the many luxurious ski resorts found here there are still lots of small, characteristic villages where family-run hotels welcome cyclists with solid, well-prepared meals, the traditional grappa and steaming cappuccinos. On your way through the Dolomites you will encounter three different local cultures: the Tyrolean, the Italian and the Ladino culture.

This tour is for those who want to experience the varied landscape of the Dolomites mountains, across the flat plains of Veneto to the city of Venice. An active holiday that offers physical exercise, good food, breathtaking landscapes and beautiful towns.

  • Well-maintained bike path along the old railroad tracks through the Dolomites
  • Taste the many regional dishes of the Dolomites
  • Experience Cortina d'Ampezzo

Day 1 Arrival at Dobbiaco/Toblach

After arriving at your hotel in Dobbacio (1200 m) you may do a city walk. This alpine resort is dominated by a fortress, and the so-called 'Red Tower'. In the evening you can enjoy your dinner in peaceful surroundings in a typical local restaurant that serves local specialties such as Stanga cheese and of course the famous speck.

Hotel (example): Apparthotel Germania

Day 2 Dobbiaco to Cortina d'Ampezzo

The tour starts from Dobbiaco along a well maintained bike path, which is built on the old railway track from Dobbiaco to Calalzo di Cadore. The route runs through the valley of Höhlenstein and Lake Dobbiaco / Toblach, which was formed after a huge landslide closing the valley above Rienza river. Shortly after you will pass a war cemetery from World War I. As you pass Lake Dürren you can admire the Three Peaks of Lavaredo. Soon you are in the province of Belluno and the national park 'Dolomiti Bellunesi'. Your final destination today is Cortina. Outside the winter months the small town is very laid back and thus an ideal place for a peaceful stroll through the city and its immediate surroundings. In the evening you can find a nice restaurant where you can taste local specialties.

Cycling: approx. 3½ hours
Distance: 34.7km
Hotel (example): Albergo Menardi

Day 3 Cortina d'Ampezzo to Calalzo

Also today most of your route follows the old railway track leading down to Belluno. During the first part of your trip the peaks of Marmolada rise on your left as you cycle towards the small town of Pieve di Cadore, which is the birthplace of the great Italian 15th century painter Titian. Visit the house where Titian was born, and have a cup of coffee or a cold soft drink at a local bar. Continue to Calalzo where the bike path ends. Before dinner, take a walk through the city and enjoy an aperitif before you find a nice place to dine.

Cycling: approx. 4-6 hours
Distance: 76.4km
Hotel (example): Hotel Europa Executive

Day 4 Calalzo to Belluno and Feltre

Your day starts with a transfer (by train) to Ponte nelle Alpi near Belluno. After seeing the pretty town and its beautifully preserved historic center you will cycle towards the town of Feltre. On your right side the Dolomite Bellunesi offer beautiful views of the high limestone cliffs. Now you will go through a hilly landscape along roads lined with trees. Stop and visit Cessiomaggiore bicycle museum (Museo delle Bicicletta), where the new and old bike models are exhibited. Late afternoon you arrive in Feltre, known as the birth place of the famous Italian architect Palladio. Check in to your hotel and go for a walk in the city, to see the many churches and ancient palaces.

Cycling: approx. 3-4 hours
Distance: 39.3km
Hotel (example): Hotel Doriguzzi

Day 5 From Feltre to Bassano del Grappa

Today's cycling takes you from Feltre to Bassano del Grappa and past Lake Corlo. Now you pass through the Brenta river valley. Brenta run under Mount Grappa, which has given its name to the town of Bassano. During World War I Mount Grappa was an Italian bastion that protected the Veneto plains, and that the Austrians made several unsuccessful attacks against. The mountain is known as one of the toughest climbs in the annual Giro d'Italia bike race. Today's bike ride ends at Bassano del Grappa. Visit the city center with the splendid Piazza dell Libertá. And do not miss the Villa Angarano, designed by Palladio. Enjoy a grappa to digest your dinner. It is the local brandy, made from the grape leftovers from winemaking.

Cycling: approx. 4 hours
Distance: 54.8km
Hotel (example): Hotel Brennero

Day 6 Bassano del Grappa to Treviso

Leave Bassano del Grappa and cycle along quiet country roads to Treviso. You will pass many villas designed by Palladio. You have now left the mountainous region and cycle through the flat plains toward Treviso. On the way you will pass through several villages. One of these is Asolo listed as one of the most beautiful villages of Italy. Needless to say, Asolo is the perfect place to parc your bikes and take a stroll through the town and maybe have an early lunch, or at least a cup of coffee. Continue through the Veneto plains to Treviso, where you will be staying the night. Treviso is famous for its wonderful historic center, where you can wander around the narrow streets and along the canals, and find a good place to enjoy your dinner.

Cycling: approx. 4½ hours
Distance: 57.9km
Hotel (example): Hotel Ca' Del Gelletto

Day 7 Treviso to Venice

The last day of your bicycle tour takes you from Treviso to 'Serenissima', the beautiful Venice. The route follows peaceful country roads through cultivated fields and vineyards that produce wines such as Bardolino and Valpolicella.

Now it's time to visit Venice, the fabled city that is world famous for its beautiful canals, old renaissance palaces and splendid churches, as well as for its carnival. On your tour through the maze of alleys you must make sure to see St Mark's Square, Doge's Palace and the Rialto Bridge. A boat trip is a must, maybe even in a gondola across the Grand Canal and through the many small side channels. It's also a good idea to visit the lesser-known parts of the city, such as the Jewish Ghetto where the absence of tourists can almost make you believe that you are no longer in Venice. Art lovers will visit one of the many museums or galleries. Do as the Italians: have an aperitif before dinner and a stroll after dinner.

Cycling: approx. 3 hours
Distance: 42.8km
Hotel (example): Hotel Alexander
